I can't believe a car made it into the stands and it was never mentioned at all on msm. I was watching that whole weekend of racing online and no one ever mentioned it.
Crashes like these are not talked about because it could put the sport as a whole in jeopardy. That's also the reason why Tony Renna's fatal accident during a test session in Indianapolis wasn't talked about much. His car allegedly cleared the catch fencing but we don't know for sure and we're not supposed to know.
@@wendigockel I can't say I know all about it, as I wasn't there and any photos and video have been mostly squelched. But having read an array of things about it including comments from people who did know, the problem was not the car clearing the catch fencing. The car went _through_ the catch fencing, almost completely disintegrating. Reportedly, that included a large portion (maybe the engine/transaxle?) ending up in the wheelchair/handicapped seats at the front of the stands there. That is not even getting into the topic of what happened to Renna, which is just too grim to discuss. If it had happened in public (practice/qual/race) it would have been unbelievably bad, and who knows what the repercussions might have been. -Regarding "knowing". As I understand it, IMS/Tony George went into swift action to get control of any possible photos and video (the latter being from IMS permanent security/track cameras). But along with that, a LOT of people were involved in cleaning up the aftermath. (The way the grandstand is set up there, a lot scattered over a large area going beneath the stands, a lot ending up across a wide area behind the stands.) Not just all kinds of small car bits, but also the remains of Tony Renna. (Sorry, I said it was grim.) With that... people talk. The general consensus apparently being that it was one of the most awful things to ever happen in motorsports. It's easy to understand that anyone involved would want as little known and seen as possible.
Well, IDK if everyone else had a similar experience as yours, but on the weekend when that accident happened, my feeds are all about that one singular incident..
@@JohnEaganMedia if you are refering to the crash on the thumbnail, I was working as an emergency team in there that day. This racetrack in Portimao (portugal) has a long main straight of almost 1km that is also the speedtrap that ends with a declive 200m before turn 1 that is a 70º turn. It also has one of the biggest runoff both with asfalt and gravel of the whole track. The problem here is that he made the main stright on his topspeed, and then he lost his breaks. With all this configurations, very little speed was lost and he hit the gravel at almost full speed, airbourne and pratically didnt hit the tire barrier, going for a direct hit on the fence. No fence in the world can witstand this, so the car went straight through it like butter on a hot day. Nothing was projected tho. Every wreckage was concealed in that area of the sits. Above those sits, theres a flat area that isnt really handicap sits. Its the entering path for those stands with a snackbar, that may serve aswell for handicaps, but i dont think thats the main point. nothing went to that zone
I was a volunteer flag marshal for this year's 12 Hour at Bathurst. When Keith Kassulke has his monstrous crash, I was on track communication, and it was immediate that this was a serious crash. One of the marshals nearby, I don't know who, but the said, and I quote, "I thought it was going to crash into the hotel." Keith did survive, the car did not leap the fence, but it certainly the worst non-fatal crash at Bathurst in recent years
like it too, but i think he can slow down much earlier by scratching the wall. but it's so unnatural to hit the wall on purpose so even the pro driver's brain dosen't work so fast.
@@thecloz23 Walls are not always perfectly smooth and can cause the car to suddenly spin off of it causing a loss of control. I don't think it's worth the risk at that speed versus hitting the tire barriers to slow down.
I was there and saw that car land about 20 feet from me as I was walking. I can tell you that it would have been smarter to hit the first tire barrier full on, that last wall he hit was the hardest impact and there was no other wall behind that one to stop him
modify what? Make a concrete barrier? Remember how the fence bent in silverstone with zhou's crash? and he went upside down breaking, went through the whole gravel and even hit the tire barrier first. And it was on first lap, so he was still getting speed Here the car went straight on his wheels, on a fast lap, didnt lost speed and as soon it hits the gravel, it airbournes, so it goes straight to the fence, almost not touching the tire barrier. What do you want to modify here exacly? You either make a 1km runoff or you make a concrete wall. I dont think you can do much besides that
@@MeatSim5 you say that yet you don’t say what it needs to be changed. You don’t live in a perfect world. Flaws exist and nothing is flawless. This is an extremely dangerous sport exactly because of it. You can only say something is unacceptable when you know that something that works better exists and is in reach. Otherwise you are just another joe that says: yeah the world is bad. You have to fix it. I don’t know how but you need to. Why don’t you complain about a total breaks fail at top speed? After all this isn’t 1950
Looks like it caught the gravel, got put into the air, hit the tyres and put into a spin, so when it hit the fence momentum carried it over (is my guess). Possible the fence just failed though.
@@minnsminnsHe realized he didn’t have brakes so he tried to hit the apex dip to slow down old Smokey. But he hit it to much and flipped off the rock. There’s an interview of him explaining the crash.
@@adrianp3098 They dont always say the truth bro. Im not saying that that wasnt a brake failure. But pay attention to the fact that the guy continued to accelerate throughout a corner that he has driven many times, i pressume, and he clips the inside which could have happened due to lack of visibility i guess. Brake failure seems rly unlikely in this situation, noone tries to stop a car like that. And probably he could have used the handbrake to gradually brake. Seems like driver error... Or a stuck throttle considering he was accelerating when he was upside down. Pay attention pls and dont believe everything u hear
Fun fact - I took the photo in the thumbnail. Was last year at Portimao in the iberian supercup practice or quali. Supporting the WEC. Taken from the supercup paddock.
I now understand why liquid cooled brakes on these things is a must-have. Good lord; the Toyota at 3:00 went up like a Roman candle from even just a small spray of brake fluid.
I would love an episode where it’s not the type of crash that’s important, but that it’s porsche cup cars. From what I can tell they regularly have the weirdest accidents
The Bathurst crash was not brake failure as brakes tend not to work effectively when the car is flying through the air due to hitting the curb rumble strips. The right corner before is taken at full speed at the end of a long straight but if you take that corner to wide it will make you drift out and make it next to impossible to take the tight left. Drivers quite often make this mistake and go off hence the huge sand traps and I have seen cars catch huge air after hitting that curb.
In that first crash the dude is completely out, you can see his head hanging and swinging after it settles... glad he was already released and recovering
2:22 was'n't a braking failure. It was a Driving Error. He drove a bit to early into the corner. There was, the beginning of the Mountain. It was actually Pikes Peak
Why are they running those kind of cars? Is it like baby stroller racing or lawnmower racing where the vehicle platform is intentionally disadvantaged to be nothing like a race car?
Fr dude. He was talking danish but like bro. Every other word was "uhh". Didnt even know we had any somewhat comp motorsports here lmao. Dude was probably like half asleep though.
At 2:20, that crash, if your wondering or surprised why he was on two wheels until he fell off the cliff was because he actually tried to get back on all 4 wheels by turning towards the cliff to flip the car to the left back on all 4. It’s like drifting, you have to turn right to go left or left to go right.
