I swear these are the fastest times ever recorded for a stock spyder in the 1/4 lol! Thanks for uploading this, the specs will surprise some Spyder haters!
@Hamsterwheel I'm pretty sure this track motorweek tested at was pretty much 0 feet above elevation. They were all over the place for factory times, sometimes they would get crazy fast for stock results or way off the pace 😅
@@boocrafty8783 I drive one daily, with larger injectors, intake, exhaust, and it's still pretty slow. The 1ZZ is a really weak engine, it should've come with the 2ZZ by default. Toyota dropped the ball half way through like always.
Proud owner of a 01. All orginal down to the cassette/CD player from the factory. Metalic Green/Tan/Brown interior with a Tan soft top. Daily driver from Apr-Oct with around 70K on the clock. Wouldent trade it for anything "modern"...Cant stand the bloatness I see today. Going to my Daughter.......Once Im gone and not a minute before.
I believe this is the only car that has an automatic SMG transmission that doesn't have a fully automatic mode. Theres no clutch pedal and you have to either use the paddle shifters or tab the transmission lever to shift.
MR2 all the way! I've had faster fwd hot hatches as well as a 2003 Impreza WRX before mine but this makes for a far more interesting and engaging driving experience imo. I don't think you'll be disappointed 😁
Not much of a choice. This MR2 is INSANE in cost now and you don't even get the 2ZZ. GT-S Celica is really where it's at and it's still very practical. I took the back seats out of mine so I guess it's a bit more MR2 like now, but there is a LOT of room back there. She's my daily.
I'm a Toyota guy but I could never warm up to this car. Really did not like the styling, I thought it was kind of awkward. Didn't like the mid-engine layout, if you overcook a corner you are going into a spin. Also hard to work on. The Miata proved you can get a better chassis setup with the simple front engine/rwd. Absolutely ZERO trunk room, the Miata had enough trunk to stuff a small cooler and a couple duffle bags, pack light its 3 or 4 days worth of luggage for a couple. The 1zz engine is LAME, Toyota should have offered the hot 2ZZ 1.8 liter, 8000rpm redline, 180hp. Found in the Lotus Elise. The Elise also offered supercharged versions with 240hp, that 2200lb MR2 would have been bonkers with that much horsepower and a lot more livable than an Elise.
The mid-engine layout isn’t going to spin if you go into a corner too hot. That’s just driver error. These are about the same as working on a Corolla from the same year. Trunk space in a sports car? Lol. And the 1ZZ isn’t that bad-it was still quicker than the Miata of the time with it.
@@cornercarver636 Dude trunk space does matter, even in a car this small. Take a week long 400+ mile road trip in the Miata, there is enough room to cram all your crap into the trunk. The MR2 Spyder, well its just an impractical toy that has an inferior chassis to a Miata, fight me on that. It might have been redeemable if it ran circles around the Miata with more power. Toyota had the exciting 8000rpm 180hp 2zz engine but were morons to not put it in this car. Yeah they stuck the 2zz into a USDM 2003ish Corolla and a Pontiac Vibe, but their sports car, oh no we can't give that car the hot engine.
@@cornercarver636 I agree with you. The lack of boot in the MR2 gives it a longer wheelbase and superior handling to NB. Also, luggage pods behind seats in MR2 hold plenty of luggage (admittedly soft bags rather than hard cases); I never had any problems going away with luggage and +1. Personally, when i owned my Mk3, i loved the look of the rear with its minimal overhangs; a boot would have ruined its lines.
Aaron, I've never spun out in my spyder- had it since 2016. I've gone into sweeping corners and had to just give a little counter steer which made me giggle. I fill up the passenger seat with groceries. Take it to work everyday. Best part of the 1zz? Take it to redline in every gear! 😁
LOL Dream on they called the MR2 the Miata killer back when I was doing Autox. The Miata may be 100x more popular but the MR2 is lighter even than the first gen (NA) Miata, just as powerful, and mid engine. Do the math.
