Why do sedans built between 1988 and 1993 look so good? Even if this is considered one of the 'bad' times for imports, i would totally drive one of these every day.
You could say Hyundai has improved so much on their quality controls and car design language in the past 2 decades. I just hope their GDI engines are easier to maintain, especially with regards to the issue of carbon deposits on their intake valves.
@@izzatfauzimustafa6535 You can immediately tell if a given GDI engine will have carbon issues by the lack of supplementary port injectors... These are usually used at idle and serve to clean the back of the valves with gasoline. If it has them, it should be fine.
I had a teacher in middle school that but a brand new top of the line Hyundai sonata G LSV 6 with leather and sunroof. She had gone to the Toyota dealership to look at a Corolla wagon. King Toyota and king Hyundai Where side-by-side and while she was looking at the basic little wagon one of the Hyundai salesman grabbed her and Lowered her over to the Hyundai lot. She paid 17K for the sonata but Didn't realize at the time that you get what you pay For. Our Cuban elders have a saying " The cheap ends up being very expensive". The basic Toyota head roll up windows and AC For 18K but for a $1000 less she could get A top of the line fully loaded Hyundai sonata with a great warranty. After having nothing but problems Throughout the 1st year when she went back to that king Toyota/Hyundai dealership in Fort Lauderdale The most any of the dealerships would give her was under 5K in trade. She even took it to carmax which only offered to give her $5500 For her gently used 17K sonata with only 9K miles. She had chronic electrical issues and problems with the AC and the car leak fluids like a sieve. She tried to Sue Hyundai Under the lemon law but the tricky dealerships were trained to make it Next to impossible. She ended up taking the hit After trading it in on a brand new Mercury tracer station wagon. I remember Her giving us a tour of her new tracer wagon. It's still head the window sticker. She told us that even though the window sticker said 13K They had to tack on the additional $12000 she was upside down. She might have been an English teacher but she taught us all about finance that day lol
Hyundai is still doing the same. Their cars may be better built and more reliable now, but they still pale in comparison to their Toyota competitors. I had a similar experience to your teacher. I bought a new 2018 Hyundai Elantra for $4k less than a comparable Corolla. Honestly, the Elantra was a much nicer car in every conceivable way. Better looking. Better built. Better equipped. Better driving. However, the reliability was terrible! I had several big problems with it immediately and the dealership was no help fixing the problems. I waited to trade it in until 2020 when crazy pandemic pricing had driven the used value up to what I originally paid for it new. So I at least got all my money back. I lucked out. Years earlier, I bought a used 1997 Mercury Tracer wagon from an elderly friend for $2600. It had 34k miles. I did have to do some age-related repairs to it from plastics and rubbers dry rotting and causing mechanical issues, but it was otherwise a great cheap car.

It's a non turbo G4CP engine I4 (4G63 rated at 110hp - 130hp) however the non performance internals not to be confused with the 4G63T GSX or EVO with a much stronger internals and higher hp rating.
This a poor copy of a 4G63 built by Hyundai under license from Mitsubishi. Sure, all of the Mitsubishi stuff will fit, but the build quality and castings on these things is ABYSMAL compared to the real Mitsubishi stuff. This generation of Hyundais were some of the poorest quality cars ever built. I still wouldn't buy a new Hyundai today.
You will rarely see one cause they are all dead. You will see plenty Toyota and Hondas roaming around. Some will even look like they are back form the dead but they still running.
Come to puerto rico , you will find it , all clean no rust , running perfect, ( bonus first hyundai to run 9s was built in Puerto Rico AKA la pulga misito👍.)

I am curious how the old Hyundais were. But I forgot many were built in Canada. I think some production shifted back to Korea since then. Plus, more recently, new plants in Mexico and in other parts of the world.
Many Hyundai and related Kia vehicles are currently built in the USA. I've heard those that are still built in Korea have better build quality. My 2018 Elantra was built in Alabama and it had a lot of squeaks and rattles when new, though most worked themselves out within the first 6mos of ownership.
New Hyundais still have the weird order smells issue that they mentioned! My Veloster never had a good new car smell. But it's crazy how a 3.0 L v6 makes around 140bhp when my velosters 1.6L GDI is 140bhp lol
The first and only Hyundai I've ever driven was a 2017 Tuscon. I really liked the styling and price point for an SUV. However, the interior was bland and it rattled. It was.. nice and I'm still considering it, but it's lower on my list after a test drive
E Meyer Not true. The bumpers were plastic with a hard plastic cover...not the pliable stuff they use now. I bumped into one of those contrete poles pulling into a parking space and it cracked the bumper. I barely hit it!
So true. I accidentally bumped into a pole pulling into a parking space in a 1995 Hyundai Sonata. I was moving very slowly inching forward. It cracked the bumper cover really badly. I was shocked that it was a hard, brittle plastic, similar to a Tupperware bowl. By 1995 everyone else was using a soft, rubbery type of plastic cover.
Heh, couldn't help but notice this car doesn't have any airbags. I think at least a driver's side airbag was becoming pretty standard by 1992. Probably shaves off a few bucks on the price of the car as well.
It is amazing how far Hyundai has came. My very first car was an '88 Hyundai Excel and let me tell you, it was a piece of shit! I hated it, however after my parents and wife all own current Hyundai cars, I have seen such a change in better quality and they are very reliable. I have went from hating them to seriously considering buying a Genesis sedan later this summer!
kurt roepke but not much if anything, I actually loved the last generation sonata with the swoopy curves but the new sonata is too bland and boring for me, I think sales show it too as you don't see many on the road. I love the Genesis sedan though, test drove it twice and was very impressed by everything you get for 40k!
yea the new one is boring. i noticed my fiesta has foam padded armrests on the door the sonata just has soft plastic and things like that.no pussyfooting get the v8.
kurt roepke well I think they have made some huge strides but all the reviewers said the same, they are trying to go after the dull and boring Accord and Camry trying to steal their audience and in doing so, went dull and boring which has hurt their sales. The fact that the curves on the previous Sonata were so sexy is what made it sell imo. I loved that thing!
+Acc0rd79 those new ones are actually never nice. they are meant to look more like Genesis. I though they look bland at first, but it has grown on me after seeing so many around here. Down here in South Florida, the new ones are almost as popular as Camry, Accord and Altima.

You saw it right. It's Mitsubishi's Sirius engine, license produced by Hyundai. But Hyundai no more uses Mitsubishi's engine from 2008, and now Mitsubishi is using Hyundai's engine like the Hyundai Theta Engine.

Brand snobs and ignorant minds still believe Hyundai/Kia/and the newly formed luxury car company car company Genesis are still producing vehicles from 1992. Some people's minds are sure slow to evolve and change that's for sure.
Some of them still think they're producing cars of 1987 Excel quality... I've owned three Hyundais (04 and 10 Santa Fe and currently a 12 Elantra) and when I had the first Santa Fe, I would have complete strangers come up and quite literally insult my intelligence for owning the car. Kid you not, one guy came up to me in a parking lot and said, point blank, "You gotta be some kind of stupid for buying that piece of shit." I asked him how he figured that and his reply was, "My friend had a Hyundai once. Biggest pile of garbage ever." I asked him what model it was. "I think it was an 86..." I looked at him and said, "That's why." I developed thick skin within about six months of owning that car. I sold it to a mechanic at the dealer at 146,000 miles in six years, all original mechanically and did better than my mom's RX300 which crapped the transmission at 85,000 miles and started to shed the second about 20,000 miles later.
I had a 2002 Optima, a 2012 Veloster, and now drive a 2016 Optima Hybrid. I've never had any issues with reliability or quality and I think the newer designs are so stylish and the interiors are so clean and good looking.

"Pretty good for the price" should be Hyundai's motto. It wasn't even in the same universe as the Toyota as far as fit, finish, feel and balance. Hyundais tend to be built for the low rent kind of car buyer who likes to think that they got a "deal" by not paying Honda or Toyota prices.
Know someone who bought one in 1988... not too long after, the the entire engine and transmission fell out onto the highway and proceeded to catch on fire. The 80s models were worse than this one. Yeah, they have come a long way. Also, one of the lights had already gone out near the end. Haha.

Unfortunately for Hyundai, the Mitsubishi engines were crap above 90k miles. The Mitsubishi 3000 GT's 3.0 used in the Hyundia's minivan was guaranteed to run like a cement mixer at just under 100k.
Disagree; my mother had a 1990 Plymouth Laser RS 2.0 and my stepdad had a 1995 Eagle Talon with a 2.0L turbo. Both of these cars were very reliable, and both of these cars had exceeded over 100,000 miles. I would still own this Sonata over a Camry, for Camry has no style and it feels cheap. Toyota is overrated...

Hilariously in hindsight, the current 2016 Sonata with the 2.4 liter & 2.0 liter turbo are derived from the GEMA design co-developed with assistance from Chrysler &...Mitsubishi! Look under the hood of any Jeep Patroit/Dodge Caliber as well as Mitsubishi Lancer & Evolution and the basic block design is very similar, with each company using its own unique heads.

A girl I was friends with in high school had a Sonata of this generation. It was actually a really nice car in terms of comfort and space, but the quality was SO BAD. Her's had 90k mile on it and it felt so much more worn out than the 1992 Plymouth Acclaim I was driving at the time with 182k miles.
It's difficult with used cars, so much comes down to user care as well as manufacturing. A terrible owner can make short work of the best of cars, and a terrible car can't be saved by the best of owners.
I completely forgot about these until I saw one in the junkyard a few months ago! Definitely a knock off Accord.. and the sonata stayed that way up until like 2007! Always obvious in the tail lights. The one I sat in was surprisingly decent, quality wise! And really well equipped. For the time I'd definitely say it was well featured.. it even had map lights! Pretty cool to see their best efforts in the early 90's, but it still didn't compare to older Accords.
They were no where near as good as a genuine Mitsubishi. Hyundai was building these engines under license from Mitsubishi. I worked on Mitsubishi cars and Hyundai cars side by side at a multi-franchise dealer back then. There was no comparison. The quality control was terrible on Hyundais from that era.

No they weren't. By 1986-ish, Honda and Toyota were known as reliable cars. Soon after, the Accord and Camry beat out the Taurus as the top selling family car.
In 1992 the Camry le was the better car. Now in 2018 the sonata gls is the better car for the money. I got 2 camrys but I’m considering a newer sonata.
I have come to respect Korea and their products. They learn from past mistakes quickly and are rapidly improving in the car business. The Hyundai and Kia lines today are very competitive with even the Japanese cars and Korea ought to be proud. I feel like this is Korea's payback to Japan for their inexcusable behavior during World War 2-----by stealing sales from Japanese auto makers!
I have family that work for Toyota, and I would buy a Hyundai before I’d ever buy a Toyota Camry. Hyundai has improved considerably, and they make a fine product. Toyota is overrated and overpriced for what they are, and some of us don’t want to own a car that everyone else owns. I drove a 2019 Toyota Camry LE, and while it may be the best selling car in America, I was not impressed. Camry looks and feels cheap, and it’s nothing to write home about. I drove a Sonata on a business trip, and while it was a base GL, it was a very comfortable car to drive.

+2fast4all they sell like hotcakes because the look good and they are loaded with features. Before I purchased my Hyundai the Honda salesman told me don't buy it, he said buy his or Toyota. He said that they were smoke and mirrors. I did not listen because we liked the features of the Hyundai better. Guess what? Two years later we begged the Honda dealership to take our Hyundai as a trade and picked up a new Honda and we are happy again. If you have never owned a Honda or a Toyota you may not realize you are missing something. If you've owned an American car then it may feel the same, if not better. Negatives - they depreciate very quickly. It is very sad for those who finance them for 6-8 years and if they were in an accident and has to have it replaces they owe the bank way more money then the car is worth after 5 years. -quality of parts are not good. Things seem to break very easily. Plastic parts on outside of car are very brittle in winter time and not covered warranty
+2fast4all Negative cont -motors are not as refined as Japanese motors. - lots of warranty work. (Thankfully it was under warranty) car is covered but in an out of dealership often. -Hyundai brakes (replacements) are very poor they make noise and dealer says that's how they are for several of their cars. Even when brand new. This was the tipping point for me and what pushed me away after spending $600 on brake replacements with them that were noisy. - low resale price - they feel cheep, just open and close a door, the did not have the solid thump. The doors would require us to close them several times to ensure they were closed. - hvac display in winter would freeze up in the cold. (Dealer says its normal) These are a few things from our experience. These cars are not built for North America low cost if maintain envy or long life expectancy. See next post for positives.
+2fast4all Positives - low price, makes it easy to afford. (Sticker Price not as low as before but they offer big discounts for sales. Price fluctuates big with promotions where as Honda does not. -great features offered. -great looks, style and design -good standard manufacturers warranty (you need it and consider buying extended warranty) Now this was from myself who said the exact thing you said 2 and a half years ago. We have always owned Hondas and used ones never brand new. Going to a Hyundai was nice at first but after living with it my old Honda felt better. There was a sense of quality my Hyundai did not have. In my opinion if you want to loose money fast invest in the Hyundai. Or purchase a used one so you can save a lot of money and get something decent.
+2fast4all As for it being better then the Accord, go drive yourself and see. Don't be afraid to push it and once you drive them both side by side you will know which one has the better feel. Take one to the other dealership and test them side by side. That's what we did and the was the deal for us to leave Hyundai. Like I said they are nice LOOKING cars and they have come a long way and no matter what the car magazines say they still have a ways to go. Keep in mind a lot of magazines and tv shows get money from manufacturers for advertisements. And these guys Donny own the cars the drive it for a few hours or a few weeks and then they come to their recommendations. Also I'm not suing Toyota and Hondas are the best and won't have problems but what I am saying is that they are a safer investment even if you have to pay a premium for them. They will hold up better you will get more out of them and even after racking up serious mileage on them someone will still buy and drive it.
