What a great car the 993 last of the air cooled. The numbers don’t even tell the story. The 911 is the motorcycle of cars, such heightened awareness of everything. Turn-in and accelerating out of turns is outstanding. Regret not buying a used one 10 years ago for just $30k.
The 993's styling is the pinnacle of the 911 line. Some might prefer the the Carrera, but for me, the Targa's seamless roof and rear glass utterly perfect the lines and shape of the car.
Was hard to imagine back then that today Porsche has SUV’s, a four-door sedan, and around 4 sports cars with myriads of variations of them (911, Boxter, Caymen, 918, GT3/2, electric 919 etc....)
I had one if these , bought second hand . Gorgeous car, practical, beautifully built . The looks are superb and that air cooled engine is a dream. The new 911’s appear bloated in comparison.
i have a porsche 993 since 1 year and its a really fantastic car !!ever !!!! i cant sell it yet i really enjoy to drive it the week end with childs. !!!!
I've been dying to see a 993 review from you guys! I have a 1996 993 Cabriolet that I'm working on upgrading right now. It's always cool to see reviews of your car from the time it was new.
I'm OK with it too, but it does change the image of the company a bit. The sports cars have become really great now from the funding provided by the sedan and SUVs. The Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera are good vehicles too. Porsche is just different now though.
The 993s were the last REAL 911s with air cooling technology. Everything about this car is to give them maximum enjoyment of the driving experience. The dash is all business and lacks aluminum or chrome trim to just dress things up. It was also a time before the stupidity of social media, texting, etc were features of sports cars integrated into them. The good ole days. The turbo 993s are now quarter million dollar cars. The ones in the video are still "affordable" relatively speaking.
90s Japanese sports cars were faster, less expensive and better looking.. when I was a kid I remember every time I saw a porche, I asked myself, why can't they make good looking supercars? Now I'll admit the models after about 2005 did improve a lot.. exterior and performance. But this one looks ugly to me.. in 1995 I was 8 years old and for me ferrari 355 was what a supercars should look like.. not overpriced beattle
+matt k Yeah, there are all kinds of super-expensive Porsches, I was just surprised- I though this wouldn't be quite so pricey to acquire currently. I'm not a car fanatic, although I would say I love cars. One day, I hope to buy a nice-looking used 911 (even if it's not a particularly rare one) for more like $25k or so.
Did you ever review VW's AWD Quantum (don't call it a Passat, America wasn't ready for that word yet apparently) Syncro? My parents' one was long gone at the hands of a wayward Cavalier before I was old enough to drive it, so the only feature I got to appreciate fully from my backseat perspective was the rear defroster wires that spelled out "syncro."
European and Japanese auto makers up their game in the 90's especially for Porsche which made a quantum leap from the 80's in in term of design. In opinion this geration of Porsche is cornerstone of years past and the future.
+Matt Thompson You're right. 'Murica and Australia are the kingdoms of performance bargains, and who cares about the grip in the corner when you can drift them all the way with your glorious V8?
Dave’s garage the track thing has already been said and you knew the Porsche was faster around a track anyway. If you’ve driven a modern corvette and a modern 911 you know there are things that can’t be shown on paper. The Porsche just feels better, the clutch, the shifter, the seats, the pedals, the steering wheel, the handling characteristics, you get the point. The corvette does give you more bang per buck performance wise but to be honest most of the time we drive on the public roads. For me Porsche gets my money.
It doesn't look like a supercar.. sports car yeah.. I'll admit it does have elements of a supercar, like the performance and the price tag.. everything else screams overpriced sports car
Would love to know the color code/name for this blue. It's fantastic, and it's also missing from the 1996 standard color chart, so it was obviously a special color they used for this press car. It looks like Venetian Blue or perhaps Baltic Blue, Petrol Blue or Prussian Blue.
