That's competitive with today's 2.0 engines.... Problem is, that horsepower isn't very useable in everyday driving. These have no torque down low and you have to wind it up to 8K RPM to access that power. It is a fun little mill if you get the chance to see those revs.
@@honkhonkler7732 nice thing about these 90s hondas/acuras though is that the gearing is quite short and shifting is smooth so you can get to those revs fairly easily, as well as the cars being very light
@@spankthemonkey3437 i would bet that a full price 89 crx si or a 92 prelude si or anything really thats brand new, from honda... knowing what its quality is and how long it would last..... i would buy one.
@@spankthemonkey3437 importing one from japan means there was another owner, has millage, has been driven or sitting for 25 years or more... nah fam, id rather have a brand new one with less then 10 miles and zero age on the plastics and materials
@@MilesPrower69420 I got a 97 civic lx that is in mint condition inside and out the plastic is all clean an not cracked the seats are clean and not torn the AC and heater work the electric door locks work and electric windows work. Only downside is the 218,000 miles it has. New shocks or struts can fix that and it would ride like new. The engine also doesn't smoke or knock. Although I did replace rod bearings just in case and Ive had the car up to 123mph and it had more to go. I wouldn't want a new car anyway no payments 😏
MrNuggetface But along with a tiny displacement is tiny torque. Domestic 5L V8s were making 160hp not long ago, but they certainly would feel much more powerful.
The Quad 4 was making 155hp and 150lb ft of torque in 1988. The later HO Quad 4 produced a whopping 180hp, and the w41 was rated at 195hp. Far more impressive of an engine than anything toyota or honda could muster at the time.
My best friend ALMOST got one of these for his first car waaaay back in 1996. 😎 However, he ended up with a '92 Accord LX sedan. Not quite as fun, but it was a 5 spd and fit all of our friends. Nothing beats those 90's Hondas.
I owned the same '92 GSR in this MW test - Aztec Pearl Green! What a trip down memory lane. One of the best cars I ever owned before someone rammed me from behind and totaled it. Had 130,000 miles on it and still ran like a Swiss watch. The interior still looked factory new. I drove a time capsule. Absolutely 1000% bulletproof in every way. A really fun car that was entirely practical too. The automatic mice belts never bothered me a bit. The only downside was highway cruising which meant 4000rpms at 70mph. That was no biggie for the engine since it revved to 8000rpm, but it "sounded" like you needed another gear and was sort of loud and annoying. When the VTEC kicked in about 5000rpms it was a fun car to rev high. Absolutely no torque until then. I guess the only other downside was some torque steer. But overall it was a fantastic car. When it got totaled I ended up ordering a 2002 WRX. I never warmed up to the 2nd generation GSR/RSXs.
My brother had this green in the Honda Accord 2dr coupe. Looked fantastic and it was a great car...bulletin proof and fast. Comparable to BMW 3 series IMHO at an econ price.
Ah ... manual only. Everyone was expected to know how to drive a manual. Those were the days. It's hard to find really good and inexpensive manual transmission cards stateside these days. And I think that in a few years, they'll all be gone, replaced by rubber-band-drive CVTs.
Bryan Ischo A year later: - Civic Si, manual only - Focus RS, manual only - Fiesta/Focus ST, manual only - Mustang GT350, manual only - Camaro 1LE, manual only - WRX STi, manual only - Jeep Renegade 1.4 turbo, manual only
Any chance of a retro review on the Honda del Sol? Also, a shout out to the team who puts together an episode of MotorWeek. Used to love watching the show as a teen and would look forward to new episodes.
For those talking about the acceleration times something to note is that Motorweek's time was for some reason incredibly slow. Other magazines tested these generation GSR's to as low as 15.2 1/4mi's with 0-60 times in the mid 6 second range. For 1992 that was incredibly quick for a car in this class.
+Alex Meza-Viera ME TOO. Honda was never my thing though, until my other car broke and a family friend got a new car but had his daily driver for sale. I got a 90' Integra GS coupe with 195xxx miles, in B-50m (Melbourne blue metallic) paint, and its been great as my first experience with JDM. Its got a cool, kinda silver looking paint with the blue interior. The car just drive on rails, your so low you really feel one with the car. I know its non-vtec, being the b18a1, but it drives, corners, and shifts so nice you don't even care its got 130hp. Would be cool to find a 92' with the b17. Those 94-01's were faster but the DA9 is a little "sexier" looking imo. Great cars.
I can't tell you how many friends I know that drive this style of Integra. Even today, it and the 3rd generation (my personal FAV) is a boy racer's FAV. BTW for music lovers who driving music,Genesis' "I Can't Dance" is the song playing on the radio.
The very first vtec in the United States and it’s always forgotten about. The second generation integra is the best ever. I’ve always wanted a 1st with a b17 but I opted for the 2nd gen base model (rally sport) sedan (Db1) with the 3rd gen b18c1 with some go fast goodies. 🥷
I echo most of the comments. Friend of mine owned of these beauty''s back in the 90's and it was an absolute gem. 8000 RPM on production car back then was mythical. Love this car!
I had two of these. Same color. I actually still have one but it needs some work before it can get back on the road. It also has almost 200k miles on the b17a1.
I owned this car but I had leather seats. Also dc sports headers and exhaust stage 2 clutch masters clutch, eibach springs toxico illumina 5 way adjustable shocks, aem intake, and my favorite item enkei 17 inch rse wrapped with yokohama v rated tires. Best handling car I ever had and the quickest. Not going to get into the audio system I installed but everything was top notch and the girls got their pantys wet when taken for a ride. Lol
No air bag in 1992 is pretty amazing for a non-slumming car - but the fact that air conditioning is a dealer installed option - that it doesn't come with it from the factory, is amazing. What a piece of junk.
Dealer installed back then I believe as were all Honda vehicles. This meant you paid top-dollar for the a/c option as the dealership made its money off that and there was no way to get it otherwise.
A friend of mine got the exact same model Integra gs-r passed down to him by his aunt. It sure beats my '96 Integra LS in the fun-factor. Both are great cars nonetheless.
I'm glad my 1994 GSR didn't come with those seatbelts. I wouldn't have bought it. The dealer tried to steer me towards that green colour... i insisted on a red one. I still own my red 1994 GSR. No plans to part with it.
I own a 1991 ls that has the gsr big brother the h22a1 2.2l over the gsr 1.8l can't believe it cost u 12k back in the day. My car is worth about 6k local and probably close to 10k in Cali.
For those taking this review literally, watch the 0-60/1/4 mi run again. The driver bogged the launch shifted early and granny shifted. They run 7 sec flat 0-60 and 15.2 in the 1/4, faster than the 94-00 GS-R. I've driven a lot of GS-R's in my day. Two doors, four door dc2's and the 92's always inched by. Just had to clear that up. Take one for a ride. You'll be surpised by the fact that they feel like they have 200+hp, despite only being 160 and can chirp third gear, bone stock.
I was lucky enough to own a 1992 GSR with the rare 1.7 motor and afterwards a 2000 GSR with the almost identical 1.8 version. The 1.7 was just seemed like it was built better. The VTEC crossover was more abrupt and pissed off sounding (in the best way). Redline was 8K but my buddy proved that there was no factory limiter until after at least 8500. Why Acura cant make a 3000 lb 280 horsepower 3 door hatch Integra with the Accord 2.0 is beyond me.
I used to have a white one I believe it was number 584 unfortunately it got stolen and was found only with the dash and windshield and frame/body everything else was gone
Speaking of home market, my 95 accord is the LX non VTECH slowest engine 130 HP. But in Japan they were all VTECH that year and the top engine was 190 HP. Very interesting because most accords were made in Ohio but some were made in Japan and imported here, but the Japanese only 190 HP models were ALL made in Ohio and ALL sold in Japan. LOL Like to add 60 more HP to mine.
Japan has always been ahead about 10 years. For instance, the mass market small engine with turbo that is only now prolific was started in Japan back in the early 2000s.
Never owned or driven a Honda / Acura but I'd love to get my hands on a Intergra (mid 90's) but people over price them here...especially the ricers...even tho many I came across are just beaten to the ground ):
The Geo Storm I just watched was $5000 cheaper. It only was .2 seconds slower and braked 2 feet better. It had an airbag and more gauges. It also had a dinky back seat and and A/C and cassette, but no power windows. It also got real 29mpg. Acura overpriced.
@@nobodynoone2500 I know the area well as that's when I first started driving. Air bags weren't common on cheap, low end cars, but this is a Acura, it's supposed to be competition with Lexus and Cadillac, and it's lacking airbags - then on top of it, air conditioning? What a piece of junk.
NO ONE ever bought an 80s or 90s Honda or Acura who wanted a true sports car. The only sports car Honda made back then was the NSX but that cost twice as much as a Vette but the Vette had more HP and was way quicker.
No human being on planet Earth knew how to pronounce the name of this automobile Let alone the alphabetic numeric soup on the left side of the rear deck lid One of the biggest marketing failures of an automobile of all time. Thank goodness the only popular color in my neck of the woods was black. But it would be nice see an old review of it.
Imagine if they had remade that exact model and color right now that can pass emission with out a problem but it would cost 45k....would anyone pick it up (I know it dumb to ask)
