📜 Purim is a Jewish holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, an official of the First Persian Empire, who was planning to have all of Persia's Jewish subjects killed, as recounted in the Book of Esther. His plans were foiled by Mordecai and Esther (Mordecai's cousin and adopted daughter who had become queen of Persia after her marriage to the Persian king). The day of deliverance became a day of feasting and rejoicing among the Jews.
📜 Among many other mitzvot/customs of Purim (like public recitation of the Scroll of Esther, exchanging gifts of food and drink, donating charity to the poor) there's a mitzvah of eating a festive meal (Se'udat Purim) during the daytime.
🍷 There is a longstanding custom of drinking wine at Se'udat Purim. The custom stems from a statement in the Talmud attributed to a 4-th century rabbi named Rava that says one should drink on Purim until he can "no longer distinguish between "arur Haman" ("Cursed is Haman") and "baruch Mordechai" ("Blessed is Mordechai")".
🎭 There is also a popular custom of masquerading in costumes and wearing masks.
