The Great Northern Mountain of China is the least travelled of the Five. Far north in Shanxi Province, the mountains was lost to Chinese imperial control for centuries but still maintained it's place as on of the Five Sacred Peaks of China.
Up, up and away....

Shanxi is full of amazing things. Wooden architecture survived here better than anywhere else in China

Thank you so much for all your hard work filming, editing and sharing the video. Many famous mountains in China usually contain religious meanings and political stories. If you don't know the history, you may be disappointed. Obviously your open and inclusive attitude and rich knowledge of humanities and history brought you there, thank you for sharing. All the best for your journey!

As all good walks, it begins in a car park. So true in China. 😀 Now that you've said it, I suddenly wish there were no man-made entrances to mountains. They are an eyesore.
@nickinchina2552
@nickinchina2552 Год назад
Yeh, they do take something away from the 'natural' feel you want from a mountain. Such popular places though, all the tour buses have to go somewhere 😂

It's a nice trip back to ancient times. Like people everywhere on earth, some are driven by their fervent religious aspirations to build monumental structures. Such buildings dotted the vast expanse of China. They should be preserved for future generations as milestones of Chinese cultural heritage.

don't remember the hanging temple being that crowded when I was there. I do remember the interior being very... meh but from the outside it's still pretty cool seeing a temple just hanging on a giant wall

In China (or Asia in general) old people were honored but old buildings NOT (aka “new is better“). So many old buildings/temples got destroyed. Many of the current "old" places are rebuild tourist sites unless they were somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

mainly woodem architecture also just doesnt survive fire, war and unrest. I was just in south Shanxi though..now that place has history 😎

That mountain walk looked great, but I'm too old now, to go up all those steps.The Chinese seem to have a mania for building millions of steps everywhere, even going down subways and up the other side.When I look down, seeing all those steps, I think, 'I'll have to go back up at some stage'. We visited the hanging temple, I think it's called Xuen Kong Si, but I may have been misinformed. Anyway, quite happy to look at it from below and not go up.
@nickinchina2552
@nickinchina2552 Год назад
The steps are tough..but i must say this was the easiest of the mountains - not too steep and not that far. Yes, xuankongsi is the Hanging Temple...looks great from a distance, there is really no need to climb it!

The Hanging Temple is 1500 years old, it's just that it has been rebuilt so many times every since.

I have actually never visited Huangshan. Travelling between the two mountains is a long journey though. Huangshan is definitely easier to get to as you can take a high speed traun there.
