Mount Hood: Reaching The Summit of Oregon’s Tallest Peak

In this video we attempt to reach the summit of Mt Hood. This is Oregon's tallest peak at 11,249 feet. It is known worldwide and next to the big city of Portland, so it gets a lot of traffic. Because of that it has a lot of injuries, rescues, and deaths. This mountain should be climbed with caution.
Here is the uncut footage from this climb. I upload uncut versions of climbs available to members that support the channel.

Don't build Jefferson into something more difficult than it is in your mind. You've become an accomplished climber and will do just fine on Jefferson. Climbing with a good team, picking the right day and knowing when to turn around are three keys and you've mastered all of them. Hood can be tricky as you found out during your first attempt but with the right conditions it's an awesome climb!

Great video Matt and congrats on all your summits! I appreciate your safe approach. I'm curious about the logistics of protecting the top of pearly gates. Did you descend the rope with a prussik and build an anchor at the bottom so the last man had protection after taking out the top anchor?
@MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon 2 года назад
Thank you! Wish my camera didn't crap out so I could show and talk more of the descent. New GoPro coming soon! Only a picket anchor at the top. The last climber was a very experienced mountain rescue person and did not feel the need for protection. But your method sounds nice and safe.

@MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon 2 года назад
Good question. Can go either way and its all about what the climber is comfortable with. I had two on the first trip because the path was going to be icier and no foot steps carved out. 2nd trip had easier conditions, soft snow, steps carved. We did use rope on most of the climb down so 2nd axe wouldn't have been possible there either. If going again without rope I would bring a smaller 2nd ice axe.

My son and I always say that trail decision making is one of the most important things to get right. I know that is a big "duh". You can have all the latest gear, and have all kinds of skills, but if you make bad decisions, it won't matter. It is heartbreaking sometimes to have to scrap your plans after all the time, effort and money you put into it. Had to cancel a PCT section hike that I had requested PTO for a year ago, but just have to remind myself that there will be other trips.
