Hi! I am still very much a newbie when it comes to mountaineering and have a lot to learn. But please send me an email if you could use an extra person to practice with on Mountaineer Adventures and don’t mind teaching :) gdsquared@gmail.com On a side note, I’m headed to California to do Mount Whitney on the 22nd!

Just finished reading "Forever On the Mountain" (1967 Denali tragedy). Recently read "Into Thin Air." Now I'm hooked & want to start climbing. This excellent video is fuel poured on that desire. I've yet to climb anything more than 2,667 meter Guadalupe Peak, TX. I'm seeking opinions for a beginner peak. I want to experience snow, ice, beginner technical routes, crevasses with ladders, crampons, at least one overnight high on the mountain, and I'd like to climb with an organization that'll teach me as many basic, beginner climbing techniques as possible during the climb. I'm not interested in life-threatening mountains (yet!) but I do understand the general, inherent, possibly deadly risks in climbing mountains even of "low risk." Thus far in my brief research, Rainier seems a good choice, with lots of teaching/guide services that span well the breadth of my desires for a first climb. I find it interesting that less than half of summit attempts on Rainier make it to the top. Why? Perhaps because of the high percentage of tourist attempts? I'm 49 years old and in good physical shape. A long-time runner who does at least one marathon annually (sometimes two) in the 3:50-3:55 range (busted 4 hours for 1st time this year!). I am currently weight/strength/core training per climbing organizations advice. Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

Crooked Halo if you want the guided help, I recommend IMG and Alpine Ascents. They have a list of beginner summits but you're gonna have to shell out more than a grand because they are high quality guides with experience.

I feel like moving to Washington just to climb this mountain. Will need to train of course... the 14ers I've climbed in CO look really easy compared to this. Even King's Peak in UT was more difficult than all the CO peaks... probably because I did it 1 day in and out. I've never actually spent the night while hiking or climbing. 9000 feet is quite a bit.

Big mountains on the west coast are way more brutal than 14ers in CO. Base camp starts about 2-3k feet making the actual climb itself much bigger

Nice video and looks fun. Is there a reason why you guys camped twice? I hear people can do this in a day, so I figured one camp and then up and down max. Also, is roped travel really necessary? Seems to be a pretty beaten down path that everyone takes that avoids any crevasses?
@jaysonyagi
@jaysonyagi 7 лет назад
William Miller Its possible to do in a day but it would be extremely hard for most people. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are an expert climber in peak health. Rope travel is absolutely necessary. Even on the beaten paths crevasses have opened up. There are often sections where exposure can be extreme and multiple ladder crossings necessary.
@gunthebitch
@gunthebitch 7 лет назад
From what I'm reading it's groomed and if you go before Sept crevasses and ladders don't come onto play. Do you work for a guide service?
@jaysonyagi
@jaysonyagi 7 лет назад
William Miller I've climbed twice before Sept and there were ladders. A massive crevasse opened up directly on the trail recently. No I don't but I do work with guides on packs.
@gunthebitch
@gunthebitch 7 лет назад
I see. Well I've been watching a lot of visitors and so far haven't seen any ladders and the crevasses look pretty obvious and easy to avoid. obviously after a heavy snow some could get covered up. Was surprises to see a few spots with some exposure but didn't look like ropes were necessary. Guess it depends on your confidence and ability. Planning on doing solo next season so guess I'll find out.:)

Putting 4 guys on a single short rope seems excessively risky, but I guess if you're doing a guided venture with inexperienced climbers, it may be better to have spare redundancy.
