While in the Black Hills area we payed a visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This was a fantastic visit for us as this was the first time seeing the memorial in person. The work to create these carvings of our American presidents is fascinating and beautifully done. The trail leading under the carving is easy and made accessible for anyone to enjoy. The only fee here is $10 to park. They offer top a museum, gift shop, and plenty of information to learn more about our country's heritage.

I pulled into mt Rushmore at 7 am. Was driving all night to deliver a moving load of household goods to Toronto. Empty parking lot, no one there. wandered around for a few minuits then continued on.GREAT EXPERIENCE.

One of the rangers was walking by and she started laughing and said it's not Bob Barker it's Thomas Jefferson. That was my South Dakota hummer coming out of me. Go there in July or August and it's packed with people. There is a cave you can walk through just under the heads on the left. Don't forget Wind Cave and Hot Springs and the indoor Mammouth archeological dig. They're just a hand full of miles further south from the heads and a must-see. Ask about the donkeys, I forget what road they are on, bring a loaf of bread for an experience you will cherish forever, then stop at the Crazy Horse Monument. Don't let the kids fool around with the mining equipment or they holler at you :-D
@mannys9130
@mannys9130 3 года назад
I believe the cave/tunnel was meant to be a vault containing historical documents and an explanation to future inhabitants what the monument was for and who the subjects actually were in case everyone forget about the US. It'll take 2.5 million years for the noses to wear away completely from erosion. Consider 500,000 years for it to be eroded enough that the people are unrecognizable, and that's a loooooooong time. The US won't be around anymore at that point, that's for sure, and nobody will care about these 4 men.

Yep! The Crazy Horse Monument is what you're thinking of, and it was started not too far away from Mt. Rushmore. The Lakota Indians really did not want Mt. Rushmore to be built. The federal government gave all of that land and those mountains to the Lakota Indians permanently in a treaty in the late 1800s. When it was found that there was gold in the area, the government took the privilege of changing their mind 🙄 and stole the land back again for themselves. That's why Mt. Rushmore was able to be built at all, and the Lakota begged to not build it on their sacred mountains. Nobody cared about what the Indians said or wanted back then. :( Crazy Horse Monument would be much larger than Mt. Rushmore when finished. To be truthful, Mt. Rushmore isn't finished either! The sculpting was meant to go down to the presidents' waistlines. 😯 It just wasn't ever completed to that degree.

@@mannys9130 thanks Manny( I am in Western Australia) I vaguely remembered seeing a doco many years ago about it but had forgotten the details, it just came to mind when Adam and Abbey went to Mt Rushmore. I suppose by the time they possibly review these comments and had posted this video they will be to far past the area to backtrack. It is a shame both of our countries didn't appreciate the original inhabitants more, I'm sure we both would live in vastly different countries... Thanks for your explanation, muchly appreciated Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺 😁

Understandable why the individuals depicted are not of much significance to a foreigner. Still though, is it not fascinating to a foreigner regardless of subjects due to the simple feat of engineering and construction involved? It's a 4-person sculpture in a mountain! 😺 Blasted bit by bit, and hand carved by men dangling from ropes in the early 1900s! It's really amazing that it exists at all and it's fascinating how it came to be, even if the presidents don't mean much to you. The same way I'd love to see Big Ben, the Kremlin, Christ the Redeemer, Hagia Sophia, Auschwitz, St. Peter's Basilica, the Burj Khalifa, 1 of the 4 copies of the Magna Carta, etc. I'm not British, so Big Ben and the Magna Carta don't really mean a whole lot to me other than the Magna Carta's influence on my country's Constitution and my Bill of Rights protections. I'm not Russian, so the Kremlin means nothing to me. I'm not religious whatsoever, so Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, the Hagia Sophia, and St. Peter's Basilica mean nothing to me either. I'm not Jewish nor German, but I'd still like to pay respects and witness Auschwitz with my own eyes, as I'm quite a WW2 history buff and it's important not to forget that it operated not even 100 years ago. I'm not a citizen of the UAE so the Burj Khalifa means nothing to me. Unfortunately, since I'm gay I will likely never be able to see the Burj Khalifa or the Kremlin in person myself. :( Oh well. These things are all foreign to me, but they are all very interesting and have historical or technological significance to mankind so I'd love to say I was there to see them in person.
