Mt. Shasta dominates the Northern California landscape at 14,179 ft above sea level. Our 2-day climb up this Cascade volcano follows the Avalanche Gulch Route, starting at Bunny Flats Trail Head, past the Sierra Club's Horse Camp Cabin, and making basecamp at the frozen Helen Lake around 10,500 ft. From there the route heads up the steep Gulch, past a rock cleaver called the Heart, up and over a band of cliffs known as the Red Banks, to the false summit -- Misery Hill. From there, there's a traverse across the plateau to the summit pinnacle. We brought our skis to skin up and get some fresh turns on the descent... But sometimes, the mountain has other plans.

11500 is where the wind turned me back too when an untimely gust lifted my 220lb frame plus my 55lb pack right off the ridge and threw me down the slope. Only time I've had to self-arrest in 35 years of mountaineering. I can take a hint!

Dang, glad you’re alright! Some days the mountain welcomes us in, and others it’s clear we’re not invited!

nicely filmed and edited video. I went a week after you guys and there was hardly any wind at Helen Lake but the summit was nuking at 50+mph. A friend of mine went about 3 days after me and said no wind at summit. typical mountain weather, you'll tag it sooner than later.

The ski down from Helen is a great ski, IMO.

How'd your tent hold up in the wind and which model is it? Looking for a solid 2p tent for a Shasta climb and would appreciate the help 😊

We were using the Nemo Kunai which worked pretty well given its lighter weight. Without the giant boulder we camped behind, it would have been a much rougher night though. I also have the REI Arete which is pretty bomber, but much heavier.

Hey just wondering, what hardshell pants do you usually wear for mountaineering and ski trips like this?

In the PNW, I typically use a rain shell like the OR Foray so I can layer them and vent them as needed.

What day did you climb this last may? I tried on May 14 and turned around because of the wind as well
