Rusty Restores/Updates a 1995 Trek 930 with a 1x11 Spd drive train, an overhauled fork, and a lot of mismatch parts from the early 2000's. Stick around for the big reveal at the end. Part nostalgia, part bike tech.

Those Trek 900 series are flat out awesome bike frames. They are straight and true. So easy to turn one into anything you want it to be. I recently had all the paint stripped off a '91 lugged frame 970 and was surprised to see Trek actually used expensive Silver brazing to attach the cantilever brake bosses to the frame. Now that is quality!

My first ever mountain bike was in 1990 and it was an $199aud Repco 10 speed. It was steel, steel wheels, white with fluro yellow forks. I’d dream of stuff like this when I was a kid. I’ve just bought a vintage project, it’s a Gary Fisher Joshua X1. I can’t imagine what I would have done to own it back when it was new.

@@CoolBikeProjects Until I bought this one (actually, I’ve bought 2, shhhh) I’d never heard of, or seen one before. I really love their look though, it’s the shape I think of when I think of an awesome mountain bike. I was thinking I’ll build one up original, and maybe the other one I’ll respray in fluro yellow and pink, like a real 90’s badass type of 2 tone. I’m not sure though because I also love their look, perhaps I’ll make them reversed, like one black and white and the other white with black. Dunno. I’ll have to wait until they’re here and I can get a really good look at them. I’m excited though.

I needed to see this! Been agonizing about whether or not to replace my Trek 930, which has taken me across Iowa 3 times since 2011, as well as other short and long-distance rides in Florida and Missouri. I love my 930 and have a special connection with it, as my cousin helped me with my purchase decision back in 1998. I decided on a tune-up and will take it back to Iowa this year for the 2021 RAGBRAI. It's not the fastest ride, but it's reliable and it makes me happy.

I washed my frame intense, absolutely drenched every surface with degreaser and cleared all the holes real thoroughly. Flushed and then used a truck wash both inside and out and repeat flushed all the grime out with high pressure water. Allowed to dry in the sun and after that a thorough spray with lanolin oil and tipped the frame every which way for 10 mins in the heat - it really digs into the steel and yeh rust - never 👌🏻

I had a purple Trek 930 . Was purchased new back in 1993. It was stolen from my garage when it was less then 6 months old.......never bought another one. The other day I came across a 1994 Trek 850 SHX for sale In my frame size. Guy selling it said its been sitting for years in his utility room. Looked it over and the bike was dirty and cruddy but everything is intact with no damage . Frame has a few minor scratches , nothing major. No rust anywhere. Oh, and it had a kickstand LOL With a lot of cleaning and degreasing, plus some TLC its going to be a good ride and well worth the 35 dollars he wanted for it. If I decide not to keep it I will gift it to a deserving young kid that needs a bike. I think I may have found something new to keep me going at age 67.

Not only were they helpful in letting me know about the drought. They helped me navigate that in fact it will take a long time to get an order. So I suggest next time, with any bike shop. Give them a ring, instead of the e-stuffs. Eddy's picks up the ring pretty fast. Not so much on emails.. :) They have more than three locations and are legit OK. :)

Hey great film! I am a Trek steel frame lover too! A few yrs ago I bought a blue 1999 930 for 10 bucks, fixed it up (all it needed was new cables all around, some new tires/tubes, a grease job and a bit of fine tuning) and won my first race on it! Had a lot of time to ride back then, was between jobs at the time. Shortly after I bought a pink 1995 930 and restomodded it with some rigid forks, new pedals, street tires, and stem/bar off a modern Specialized. That one was a bit more neglected but it cleaned up very nice. Love the lugged frames from those earlier years, although the geometry isn't that great for descending but it doesn't matter to me since I turned it into an around town bike. For these old forks like the ones you put on this Trek, where do you go to buy rebuild kits/seals, etc for them?

Hi Roderick- I honestly don't know. It would be best to go to a trusted bike shop and ask them to measure things for you first before you buy something. I like the style of this vid - can you share with me what you used for a camera, mic, lighting and how it was edited i.e. what software you used for it? Any tips would help a lot! Thanks, and great video! Ron at Velocity Bikewerx.
@CoolBikeProjects
@CoolBikeProjects 8 месяцев назад
Hi Ron, thanks for reaching out. This was one of my first videos for the channel so not a ton of gear was used for it. I had a mirrorless camera with a decent zoom lens 24-70mm. Lighting was a just the over head lights in the garage, audio was done as a voice over recording with a Rode Video Mic GoII powered by usb-c to the computer. I edit in Final Cut Pro. Best wishes on starting your channel! Tips: 1- Let the camera roll and edit out or speed up the unnecessary parts. 2- Change up angles as often as you can, so the audience can see the details. 3- record as much sound as you can. Some people like the sound of the ratchet or the sounds of the bolts loosening. 4- Be cool to everyone. It takes a while to build an audience, so respond to everyone and don't take criticism personally.

Any chance at an item list? I have a 930 that I found in the garbage that I combined old parts for and have had on the trail numerous time, but would love to have a suspension fork, new headset, and 1x11 cassette. I just do not know what parts are needed.

@@CoolBikeProjects ok so me and my son dug into our 1995 single track 930. we went cheaper with a Wake 780mm bar, headset, we stuck a quill adapter in the original fork (we don't have a shock just the original forks) New Shimano Linear pull brakes, and kept the old cassette and cranks for now, just want to ride the thing...But i had to order a new bottom bracket. one item I have a question about, When you ran the cable for the rear brake, did you enclose it for the length of the top of the frame and then what did you do once you got to the seatpost are that has that built in tube the old brake line went through? We thought it would be too tight a bend to go from that welded on tube guide so we used a hose clamp and mounted a section of cable sheilding to the frame? picture of that area would be of great assistance. Thanks. the inspiration was perfect. Eventually the parts will find their way into our lives that turn it in to a 1x11, bu ti told my son, with this age of bike, the less you spend, the more fun I have....

@@KAlone321 That is awesome! Way to go guys. Since I went to a 1x11 I was able to borrow the cable guide that went to the front derailer as a stop. You don't want to use the tiny brake tubing by the seat post as you said it will be way too tight. I would suggest running the brake housing as a solid line from the level to the v-brake with noodle. If you want a cleaner line you can use some stick on brake guides just as a guide. If you are happy with your hose clamp then keep it. I found these guides here: www.amazon.com/Xmomx-Derailleur-Fitting-Housing-Durable/dp/B07YTZXPTJ/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=cable+guide+bike&qid=1627305255&sr=8-5 for about $8. I have sold the bike to a friend and don't have an image of it. If you email me, I'll get a picture of the brake line from him. Thanks! rustysbikerepair@mac.com

Really enjoyed the restoration, mods and ride. What size frame is it? I ask because I have the chance to purchase an 18in 930. I am 5'11" with a 32" inseam. I am wondering if the frame might be too small for me? You look good on the bike. How tall are you? Thanks.
@CoolBikeProjects
@CoolBikeProjects 3 года назад
Hi Kathy, Thanks for reaching out. This was a 16.5" frame. I am 5'7'' so this fits me well, particularly with the taller fork. The 18" might be be a tad on the small side for you, but without seeing one built up it's hard to say for sure. You might check with your local bike shop to get their thoughts with your measurements. Best of luck.

I'm 6 feet tall and with set back seatpost and long stem 120mm I made 18 inch fame fit me a gt tenquesta if it's good shape and price is good I say go for it just expect alot of seatpost showing and the bike to feel small for your size but it could be great bike to ride around town with the kids on bike paths or as errand grocery better with couple racks or rainy day bike with fenders

@@CoolBikeProjects in the process of finishing up my 930 but running into cable routing issues for the rear brake - do you use that little tube on the seat post if you convert to V brakes? I have been just routing some hosing around it but I think its causing a kink or something because the brake lever doesn't spring back when applying rear brake now. May end up taking everything apart first and making sure it is well lubricated and the spring tension on the caliper arms is strong enough. Cheers!

Nice looking bike but poor quality control or poor transport.Rear wheel has major issues right out of the box. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Rear axle is bent! Derailleur is misaligned.Since the rear wheel comes assembled I would have expected better.Assembly instructions poorly written, but that was not unexpected...just annoying.I just had the bike checked at a shop and was told that I should contact the seller about getting a whole rear wheel assembly with cartridge. (The bike shop could not do anything to help me).Not a good experience with this bike, so lesson learned.Added 3 stars for excellent customer serviceUpdate Sept 8 2020Just received a complete replacement wheel for free. Going from a 63.5mm drop to 100mm drop seems significant. Was there any real negative to changing by this much? Would you recommend restricting it to 80mm instead?
@CoolBikeProjects
@CoolBikeProjects 3 года назад
Excellent question. This particular year of the 930 the geometry of the frame had the right head angle to accommodate the longer fork. It's best to set up a bike project with the fork in the frame and wheels on the ground to make sure the head angle is not pitched back too far. I am working on another bike project like this and experimenting with fork length to get the right angle. Sometimes you will need to keep it to 80mm.

I love the fact that you repainted the fork's legs! It really suits the bike. I'm considering doing the same with a vintage bike of mine, because the new fork I'm planning on installing is a bit bland. The original fork has that bare polished aluminum look, and I'd like to see if I can replicate it - or at least give the new fork a light silver metallic finish that would have it match the finish of the old stem and bars.
