Mountain Biking on Vancouver Island- Mt Washington 2020 

Dustin Batchelor I feel like Salami Hands is an accident waiting to happen. They built a mound at the entrance that resembles the lip of a jump. Yet it isn’t a jump it’s a 90 degree right corner that you can’t see because it drops away. You are generally flying off the fire road into the trail as well. Some kid who doesn’t look before he leaps is going to send that straight to the emergency room.

I fact checked that but unfortunately it only came up 10% accurate. 😉There appear to be quite a few new channels covering the same area so I don’t think there is any shortage of content. I may change my status to semi-retired one day....

dangerforceidle It was basically the same as it was years ago. I think I took all the easier lines though. It was proper steep. I am not at all a let it all hang loose rider and like to keep on the side of control and as you saw that required keeping it slow. Even with 29 inch wheels ( which I normally don’t care too much where they go) I had to pick the lines carefully.I have always liked that trail so there is a certain amount of sentimental value. All in all they did a decent job adding some good steep tech that is not Monster Mile. A top to bottom Helter Skelter is a pretty fun tech line. The bottom is rough but fast so it compliments the slower top section giving the trail a satisfying end.

@@ThisIsGoingDownhill Last time I was on the trail I remember struggling with my Norco Rampage hard tail. I'm glad they kept the original character. The new jump line looks decent too. If only they had a trail crew big enough to handle new builds and maintenance on existing trails at the same time.

dangerforceidle A Hardtail back in the day on Mt Washington was the epitome of hard ass! Good on ya. It wouldn’t be hard or terribly expensive for them to put a little effort into keeping the trails in good running order. You really only need to maintain the flow trails and repair the tech when needed. It frustrates me that they waste the potential of this park year after year. It’s like they have a car that doesn’t run correctly yet instead of repairs they buy a spoiler.

I was just there and conditions are at an all time low. Not only has there been a lack of rain it appears they did not do any maintenance to the trails whatsoever. The blue flow trail Highway 19 is one of the roughest on the mountain with tire deep bomb holes at the end of every berm. There is really no reprieve from the rough stuff at this mountain. I did not film this year because I would feel guilty if someone went up there because of my video.

@@ThisIsGoingDownhill ah, that's too bad. I'm probably going to go up anyway, just because I really want to try a downhill park, but I'll probably just go once, at least for this season

I don’t mean to discourage you. Definitely go. I was personally disappointed with the conditions and a bit frustrated that we were limited to Back in Black for an easy run just because the Blue and Black flow/jump trails are in such poor condition. I will say that Blue Hammer wasn’t too bad for a blue trail. It has a nice cut to it but there are no challenging features. Time Warp used to be good but it was the scariest run I did this time. It used to be a fairly intuitive black jump trail. It’s pretty rough now and that makes it a little frightening. Anyhow, just prepare for the worst so when you get there and experience it you might think it’s not as bad as I described. Good luck!

True! I bet conditions for Saturday and Sunday will be pretty good. They are calling for rain through Friday on the mountain.

gtmclaughlin My bike is a pretty burly trail bike but it fairs alright. Your Ripmo would be fun but maybe a tad undergunned for the blown out conditions right now. It will kick the shit out of your trail bike though. My bike feels like garbage right now.

@@ThisIsGoingDownhill Fair enough. Ya the abuse of park on your trail bike pretty much makes a DH bike worth it in the long run. Might have to just get one!

gtmclaughlin I am seriously thinking of procuring one before next summer. I have always enjoyed the confidence a DH rig inspires. Would also entice me to ride Prevost more.

Ha. Due to the pandemic there are a ton of new trails in my area that I would love to film and share with you guys. Unfortunately there is a lot of controversy surrounding these trails and their legality. People put a lot of hard work into these trails and I would hate for one of my videos to ruin that. I have filmed illegal trails in the past but because of the growing popularity of the sport and authorities cracking down hard on illegal trail building I am just letting the situation simmer down a bit before posting any trails. I realize there are legal trails I could post but I have really covered all my favourites already.
