The long wet winter of 2024 continues, so what better time to try out my £21 tent in the mountains. I'd put this one off for ages because I thought it would be pretty grim (I was right)

As a lifelong biker, I have spent a lot of time camping, including the well known Dragon rally where the wind chill on a Welsh hillside in winter can be life threatening. I have always used cheap tents with a good tarp over the top, making sure that the tent is at least 2ft longer than me, and I have never got really wet. Now in my 70s I have to be a bit more careful, so my son got me a long low double skinned survival tent, which is side opening. Great for me as I can throw a spare tarp out of the door in the morning and then just roll my arthritic carcass out onto it. Sorted.

In the late eightees I walked back from an illegal rock festival. 50 miles across Wiltshire and Hampshire. The tent was tiny and had metal poles and ridge tube. They could have been gas pipes and were superby heavy. It was so tiny we laughed out loud when we first got in it. It must have weighed 3.5kg . We had no proper rucksacks, just seventies style schoolbags, one of whoms straps immediately broke and had to be replaced by baking twine. We used a single pint plastic milk carton that didn't have a proper seal lid as our water container. Didn't have a gas stove just some matches a pot some vegetables and stock cubes . On the final day we ran out of money and food and resolved ( not proud of this) to shoplift food if we couldn't get a hitchhike lift by nightfall) Caravan style square sleeping bags. It was hellish. But the landscape was fantastic. I resolved to buy decent stuff one day I did this in the following order: functional rucksack ( Norwegian army £8) sleeping bag with hood (Chinese brand £30) , rubberised rainsuit - heavy but effective (Issued by work). Then , some years later a VANGO Odyssey micro tent for a then staggering sum of £156. It was like walking into a new era of luxury. In some ways I love the modern world .. I love my half decent brand gear, my jetboil and fresh coffee. There's a Starbucks behind every rock. My suggestion - buy the tent and a cheap 4mx4m plastic tarp to peg over it for a huge vestibule . Plastic emergency bivvy sacks are really useful cost nothing, weigh nothing and will save you from extreme discomfort ( and possibly death )..

In 2020 i decided to see how cheaply i could camp. I bought a pop up tent for around £20 and took it out for a night once the initial covid restrictions had lifted. It was a similar experience to this. I then decided to try to build around the tent, so i bought a huge tarp(5m x 8m), some camo netting and some poles. and set off again. That one was much better. I had the tent set up, with the tarp set over a framework of poles, in essence creating a larger tent around the tent, which i used as a vestibule area where i stored my gear, cooked and ate. I then used the camo netting as a door over the opening in vestibule to enclose it all. I finished it off with a set of solar fairy lights which i draped over the framework of poles. I have to say, it was a fantastic set up and took me back to my childhood, building gang huts and camping out in the back garden. I stayed out for 5 nights in that. If i remember right, the tarp was about £30 and the camo netting was £20, the poles were around £30, so it wasn't bad value for roughly £100.

1: I like that your phone screen is chipped. The fact that it still works and you haven't just replaced it for aesthetic reasons implies, to me, that you're practical. 2: I love that in the few videos of yours that I've watched, you always seem to be camping in a place so damp that I'd consider it a nightmare. I don't particularly like deserts, but I'm much more comfortable sleeping in them than in wet areas. Maybe that's why I like your videos. You camp in places I would not. I assume it's Scotland. If so, you've put me off the idea of ever going there without having a reservation in a nice hotel.

Hi, Claire! I almost laughed to tears with this video, as I had my own "Titanic adventure" with such a tent-like thing ;) :P I was tempted by it as I once needed a substitute for true ultralite camping gear (then beyond my budget) when I go for autumn/spring outings and need an emergency shelter "just in case", without carrying a true tent. I'm not a fan of bivy bags ;) So I bought from a department store such a "tent" like this one in the video. Had little opportunity to test it prior mountains, just a weekend kayak trip in September with little to no rain. So far so good ;) Then I risked to take it in November for serious solo hike in mountains. I'm not that stupid - I was about using huts and solid shelters accesible in the range, but just needed 1-2 wild camps at the very start/end. So I went... The evening weather on the 1-st day steered towards wind&rain pretty fast. I chose a protected place in small forest on the mountain pass and set up my camp. The first 1-2 night hours were nice, but then realised that my sleeping bag has some wet problem. Quickly found quite deep pool of water inside the tent. I could use my drinking cube for pumping it out and had to continue all night. So my Titanic was sinking till the very dawn, pumps were operated all time, just the orchestra had deserted somehow, I had to sing alone :) I had to quit and fall back home (all the way from neighbouring country), fortunately had enough time to dry my gear and after a day to join my friends in another mountains closer home :) Regards, -J.

Thank you for taking on this challenge & for taking one for the team. I couldn’t do it!😂. The biggest issue I have with gear such as the tent you used for this outing is that much of this great is recklessly mis-advertised to the consumer. This increases the probability a novice outdoor enthusiast will get in trouble using it. Then the absolute misery they experience sours them on camping & hiking! To me the reality is nearly all tent/shelters are best paired with a good quality true camping tarp. Who cares about the extra weight! Staying dry in inclement weather at 2:00 am is worth it! Leave all the discussion/experimentation with ultralight gear to the hardcore outdoors people. In the case of this tent, if paired with tarp, it would at least shelter & insulate its occupant. Notice I didn’t say occupants.😏

So the moral of the story is you get what you pay for. I bought a similar tent by Ozark Trail for about $27 U.S. it seems a bit bigger than this one. I’m 5’9” and I fit pretty well inside. The tent is pretty water proof and overall a decent tent for the price. The only downside to it I’ve found so far is one, not the best in cold temperatures because like the one you’re using it’s only one layer and it has poor ventilation causing condensation from your breathing. Other than that it’s actually a pretty decent backpacking tent for the small price. Would love to see you review it. ☺️🤙
@RickINFJ
@RickINFJ 5 месяцев назад
Did Frank lose weight? 😂 Well, if you weren't near a water source, you could harvest all the condensation you could ever need! Oh Claire, you gave me a camping flashback. Went camping with my daughter and her boyfriend. Their tent broke on setup, so I gave them mine, and we went to town to find me a cheap tent. It was exactly like this but yellow. I'm only 5'5" and still couldn't lay straight. Major condensation! I didn't sleep a wink. We went back to town, returned it, and got a proper tent. Thank you again for a lovely video. You never disappoint Beare. 🌲⛺️🌲

The note you ended on, this is the gospel. So many people go out into the elements and have a bad experience with rain and water in the tent. And that clouds the way they think about camping from then on. All tents have condensation issues. But... what I want is a shelter I can trust and that I know will not let in the rain. The Hilleberg Akto is a pretty old design by now, and apparently the Enan is better- lighter, just as good. But what I know when I pitch my Akto is- I'm gonna be dry, and it's going to stand up against the wind. That's all I want at the end of the day. I'm willing to slog 10 miles through wind and rain, so along as when I get where I'm going, I can pitch a shelter and get in out of the elements. The Akto is yesterday's design, but still solves today's problems. It has a generous vestibule for a solo tent. So, you can pitch in the driving rain, get into the vestibule (it will be cramped), and get your sleep system in place, undress and get into the inner tent without getting it wet. If you're unsure what to buy, but you come across an Akto on Ebay for a really good price, snap it up. Back in the day, it was considered ultra-light. Not so these days. But it's still fairly light, and it will stand up to the elements. If it's still raining when you wake up and you have to break camp in the rain, remove the inner tent first and store it separate. Then break the outer and store it somewhere in your ruck that it doesn't matter if it's wet. You can pitch it wet again, install the inner from the vestibule (cramped but it works), and eventually when you get good weather, you can dry everything out.

At the beginning of this month, we helped a couple of teenagers set up a tent they thought would be big enough for both of them. It was so tiny, I initially mistook it for a pet's tent! The weather in the Lakes was merciless-rain, sleet, and snow all at once. Thankfully, they wisely chose to call off their camping weekend. I am glad they did after I saw your video. Definitely not the ideal conditions for their first camping experience, even at a campsite.

Nice video. Bad equipment. This is a perfect example of what I would say her in Texas USA, tape a quarter to it and get rid of it. That way when someone finds it, they can say they found something worthwhile. You are correct with your advice. Save up, buy the best gear you can afford. Bad gear, new campers / hikers, very bad scenario. Having bad gear can certainly turn a new experience into the last for a lot of folks. Love your videos young lady. I love the way you throw Frank around. The tent seems a perfect tent to either take to the beach for cover, or for kids to play around in the garden and for them to try camping in a safe space in the garden with their mates. It’s definitely not a hiking camping tent, a festival tent at a push.

Two years ago I bought a tent from Decathlon, the Quechua MH100. $49. Actually got it for $20 due to a flash sale. 20 bucks. I have taken that tent out in crazy windy rainy times (I was curious). It's my winter tent now; so many times its stood up to a morning dump of snow. Now true, when I go snow camping, I'm usually pulling a pulk. But I have had it a time or two in my pack. It's flukey really. Yet a half dozen of my group members all have the same tent. It's shortcomings?? Heavy. That's it. But not crazy heavy. 5 lb 7 oz. Certainly not a backpacking tent--not in the league of my Durston X-Mid-1, that thing is 28 ounces. But you know what, for let's say 50 bucks, it's stable, well made, not drafty at all, has multiple guy outs, and is simple to set up and pack away in its slick roll up bag. Also, flukey in that it has next to no condensation woes. I really can't fault it. BUT true to this video, sometimes you DO get what you paid for. Look at Frank. He's vinyl, a little pale, looks leaky on his own.

You made the classic mistake putting the bendy poles up… if you do the “over” pole 1st then the “lower” pole is fighting against the “over” pole and takes great effort to distort the now restricted “lower” pole… hopefully my explanation makes sense… 😊

This is good advice. In my day, we had to seal seams on top-quality tents ourselves and bring a sponge to deal with condensation. This with a tent and full-coverage tarp. The coated fly would stick to the walls of the tent and block ventilation. I agree that the tent is just the start to having a shelter. The rest is adapting the equipment to the needs of your trip.

I paid £30 for a Gelert Scout 2 - 2 man tent many years ago. As a photographer (sports) I used it for shooting fell races in awful conditions. Poking my lens out of the front- it served its purpose very well. I've been out in close to monsoon weather and it held up really well ! I've also camped out in it also. Not so good for cold weather however- very chilly... I still have it- and I love it. Simple to pitch and peg and light enough... Your tent has the misfortune of short sleeves for the poles- leading to a shoddy structure !! A dire design...

here are my rain tips from years of interest. i now think an inflatable mattress is awesome for having a dry ground for your tent. then place a poly tarp over your tent with the doorway pitched up with a pole. look for a tent with its poles on the outside giving space between the tarp and your tent. look for a tent with a mesh door and roof. the air mattress is intex dura beam 6 lbs for a 4.5 ft wide one.

Believe it or not these tiny tents are the best seller on Amazon....the name keeps changing but generic: 1.3m x 2m Tiny rain fly, tiny vent No windows...just the door Most aren't waterproofed. The rib stitch holes are huge as you see sunlight through it. Surprised this one is taped. Apparently not enough. The door can't help but leak. You must put an extra tarp over it. I bought 2 of these from my wife's store. They were on clearance for $5. I do use it motorcycle camping in cold dry weather as it is like wraring a windbreaker to bed...it is only 2lbs and a couple oz. It is basically a bivvy. My wife uses it on overnight dry hikes. I'll eventually give one to my granddaughter. But they do make very good supply tents, if you toss a tarp or woobie over it in the rain.

A few years ago I was asked to do the supervision for my daughter's group who were doing their DoE Gold expedition in the north-west Highlands, up on the Sutherland/Ross-shire border. Since they were using my mountain tent, I bought myself a £14 festival tent from Tesco and, you know, it worked surprisingly well. Yes, as a single skin tent, it had a bit of condensation and, yes, the vent mesh size was bigger than the Highland midges, but it was very light and packed small. If it had been flattened by a storm, I would have had to pass an uncomfortable night in the bivvy, but I concluded that these things have their place and as long as you know the limitations before you go and plan accordingly, they are OK. Where they are definitely not OK is with the increasing number of people who buy them for a single weekend, then leave them pitched where they have camped, surrounded by the rest of their camp debris.

I had a very similar tent, not sure if it was a EuroHike brand, but it was cheap...and not so cheerful. I didn't even use it in anger; I put it up at home and put my sleeping pad in it. My sleeping pad ended up like a banana as it didn't fit. I looked at the advertised measurements, and based on those, the sleeping pad should have fitted...just. I then measured the tent, and what I thought should be the internal dimensions, was actually the external dimensions between the peg holes, presuming they were pulled taught. Suffice it to say; the tent went back. I have since used another tent along the same lines (I borrowed it from my partner) and my sleeping pad fitted. There was still very little room for more than one person on a sleeping pad and a pair of boots; but for the odd night alongside my van, it did the job. I certainly wouldn't take it hiking.
