Mountains can serve as a boundary or an obstacle to overcome. But they can be a destination in their own right as well, holding challenges and rewards, dangers and discoveries.
Where the bones of the earth reach high into the rarefied air an elven mage sought seclusion to pursue forbidden magics and unnaturally prolong her life. Amid the natural threats and resources of this isolated environment she tapped into the elemental planes to summon forth guardians before turning her attention to darker arcane forces. The results of her experiments with necromancy litter the high passes and dark valleys of these mountains. So does what's left of the wizard herself. She wanders this region bemoaning her lost life and beauty with eerie wails that rise up to the creatures wheeling through the sky above.
