I've been thinking about the 'Dao' of what you have to work with from the last podcast. I've got a lease on a 20 acre Alaska parcel. Its mostly rocks and glacial leavings but those rocks are being used to build cute little Yurts to rent out. The remaining soil is being used to propagate cover crops for sale. What isn't glacial soil is swamp land but the swamp is being turned into irrigation and a float channel for boats and fishing. Because the glacial area is above the surrounding land its high wind. But that means windmills and solar panels. The mosquitoes were so bad when I started here I pretty much had to wear a body suit. Even with a body suit it was still pure hell. But I never need to feed my Goldfish. They are getting fat and the mosquitoes are on the run. I have a small fan club of dragon flies out of the deal now too. It really changes your perspective when you try to view everything as an asset instead of a liability. As far as waning health that comes with age. I had heart and kidney failure at 44 and was forced into this lifestyle as I realized I could no longer digest ninety percent of store bought food. I still have almost all the symptoms you do at 52. You reach a point when you realize you are doing a dis service to history by trying to do it all yourself. It makes more sense to have younger people doing the hands on while you point your finger. I therefor believe a key in making these sort of things move forward is getting the right screening tools to find the young people. I'd personally give an MMPI to anyone considering a long term apprenticeship with me. I've only been at this for ten years but still I've learned so much and at least some of this is knowledge unique to me I feel it would be a crime to not try to preserve it for future generations. Older people with knowledge of growing are already in short supply. We've already lost so much of our history in regards to taking care of the land we really can't afford to lose anymore.

I'm not into living with other people on my land per say. However I think neighbours with the same basic view on the world and lifestyle is a good thing. I am a loner type like my space and privacy too much to deal with people's energy. I find it very exhausting except in small doses. I do plan on my children living on our land and grandchildren I think that will become a thing again. It kinda is already we inherited our land that we live on now and the land we plan to go fully off grid on. We plan on building a small cabin taking some time out of the system and help care for my wife's parents. Its how we took care of my mother before she passed. I think the days of families living all over the place will come to an end.

'The Dawn of Everything' is quite good. A similar, however slightly more romantic-towards hunter gatherer societies, and because of that sometimes contradictory to 'The Dawn of Everything'-is ‘Civilized to Death: The Price of Progress’ by Christopher Ryan''. One book I originally didn't think I would find useful for my own research, but has been surprisingly so, is 'Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist and Other Essays' by Paul Kingsnorth.

You are a true inspiration🖤🤗🙏🏿 I’m trying to start something similar with permaculture ideals we have purchased 2acres of ancient forest with old 400-700yr old trees on an island the fungi is incredible it’s going to be a life’s work, I’ve spent my life doing other peoples gardens horticulturist/arboriculturist. We all need to respect nature more as we are part of it. All the best in all you do.

I am going to pray for your health to return. I am sorry you have had such a hard time finding so few people to get along. On another point I would like to recommend for food needs 3 standard Rex doe and 2 bucks. They produce about 600lbs. of meat a year. There is much information on the internet about them- Good Simple Living did some great videos on growing, etc. The furs bring money. They are medium size and very healthy. I wish you all the very best. We are down in Alabama and here with family, but I have no doubt you can do this. You literally are handing people a ticket to paradise if their idea of paradise is walking through beautiful gardens that they help maintain and designing/building their own homes to blend into the natural surroundings, feeding and providing for themselves and family off of what they work. It is a beautiful plan.

I have owned and operated a landscape company for the past 20 years. I have always wanted people to work with me and not for me. I encourage people to think on their own and develop their own strategies while working with me. I do this because I find life more interesting when people bring to the table their own experiences and wisdom. Unfortunately I find many people aren’t willing to work with me, they only want to work for me. There is a desire to avoid mistakes and not have to problem solve. Typically they want me to make the decisions for them and then if there’s a screwup they can blame it on me. I don’t mind taking personal responsibility, but it does feel very lonely being a leader. I would so much rather people take ownership and work with me. I wonder if a community like this could work without some sort of leader ship. I suppose it would take a certain personality and psychology to do it without leader ship.

Worked 20 years as a supervisor and manufacturing specialist for a military munitions aerospace and oil exploration company. I too encouraged my team mates to work with me not just for me. Sadly I too found 90% had no interest in Working with me, or problem solving or sharing their ideas for improvement changes etc... they only wanted to do as little as possible, Only as I instructed so they had no responsibility, no investment personally in the process 😢... I'm retired now and trying to run a small residential excavation landscaping business but finding it near impossible to recruit good dependable people to work with me.
@emil9208
@emil9208 10 месяцев назад
Leader ship is crucial. Equality only works on paper, in an ideal world. But we don't live in an ideal world. There are always leaders and followers. Both in the human and in the animal kingdom. And if I have to choose, I'd rather be a leader than a follower. When I look at today's world around me, the politicians who created it (Biden, Gates, etc.), semi-literate and semi-intelligent individuals...these are certainly people I do not want to follow. I only follow myself, because at the end of the day I trust myself the most. Both in the private and business worlds
@madfoxcityemnau6414
@madfoxcityemnau6414 10 месяцев назад
Leader is someone for followers. I mean, there is a great deal of misconception about responsibility, much of what you touched upon, but really it boils down to ppl being very disoriented withOUT some kind of hierarchy. Stay strong.

The thing is, the vast majority of people simply want to read or watch a fairy tale for an hour or so a week, then condemn themselves to absolute drudgery for the remaining hundreds of hours of the week. Also, they like to watch people with skills do things thru a screen, but lack the real world grit to do it on their own because they've already conquered the world, twice, in a video game.
@terrybouffard6165
@terrybouffard6165 11 месяцев назад
With your commune idea - you are fighting human nature. You have just proven that the concept doesn't work. People don't work that way. They want their own land that they fully own. Unless there is a family tie with an obvious leader, the commune living won't work. Think of clan living such as was done in old Scotland or African tribe. What makes those places work is that their is one leader that has the final say and they all have a family tie.
@ximono
@ximono 11 месяцев назад
I'd argue that being of the same blood is more important than having an obvious leader. There are also different sorts of leaders, some don't have any privileges at all and are fully at the mercy of the group. I'd prefer that to a small dictator.
@madfoxcityemnau6414
@madfoxcityemnau6414 10 месяцев назад
Tribal society is very misunderstood. I would agree with you. But even without blood ties someone, usually male, is always vying for alpha and very skilled at social engineering for lack of better phrasing. It works but not on any previously understood scale or cycle. It's an interesting tho not necessarily original idea. And I have to say, as far as ideas go, Joe is quite visionary.
