If you're in the US and you're not sure where to find 3" foam or thicker, online seems to be the best option same as it is in the UK. I've found a link here that will deliver to the UK, so it sure as hell should deliver to you guys! insulation4us.com/collections/rigid-insulation/products/owens-corning-foamular-250-xps-insulation-board-all-sizes?variant=32154942177329 They are sold in large sheets of 8'x4', which means you will need to cut these down a bit and will need to buy a solid sheet at a time, but it's totally possible and still quite affordable, given how long that sheet will last you. You can select thickness on the right. From the looks of it, it would pretty much cost me the same as my local foam, even with $60(!) delivery to the UK, though you would be buying twice as much at once as I did with mine... Also it's pink foam, not blue, which from what I've heard is slightly better for taking texture and is less fibrous, but this is second hand knowledge coming from black magic craft. I've also linked the version with higher compressive strength, as I'm presuming that will be the hardest version that should take texture the best and squash the least - though that is theory on my part, I've not had many opportunities to test this theory. Hope this helps! Also if anyone has any questions about the system and how it works, or any ideas to share just ask! I'm here and happy to answer :)

For those of us in the U.S.A., I'm pretty sure they sell this at Menards, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.

At menards is special order for the 3" But a single 2" and a 1" sheet comes out to $50 ish together.

Question, would this system look and function as nice if you added a grid onto all these blocks or no? For D&D
@RPArchiveOfficial
@RPArchiveOfficial Год назад
Function yes, look as nice no, but you really don't need a grid! Check out my very first video, using a tape measure like wargaming makes it just as fast if not faster.... Plus it makes the minis and terrain so much better looking 😂

I think what's so great about your work is how creative it gets, you always go so far to showcase what your systems are capable of, to the point where you're practically inspiring rather than presenting. Each example looks like it's part of a story, and that's what is so fantastic about your work. And the youtube algorithm needs to favour you more because your effort and work goes above and beyond.
@RPArchiveOfficial

Thank you so much :) that means a lot to me, it really does.
@JessiFayS

I've heard over and over that our engagement (commenting, liking and sharing) will help get the algorithm to suggest videos to others. I may not really have anything new to say, buy I keep trying to comment. I bet Matt probably doesn't get tired of "you're awesome" comments, but I would still feel better if I had something better to add. :)

If you want side tunnels attached to a wall, that is sealed or otherwise not a space you want the players to see. Take a standard block and carve a whole about 3/4 inch inward. The use a black epoxy, resin, or method of choice to make a sort of void. fits into most walls quite well and can be used as a whole on a floor as well

So I pretty much watch crafting videos for hours to get ideas for my own dungeon and dragon campaigns. Pretty much been nixed with Covid, but I love crafting anyway. For me your designs are the in between I like the most. Other crafters focus on cost and go low end. Others spend money on expensive items to allow crafting with purchased grass and plaster terrain and a bunch of other things. So I have subscribed to yours while I have avoided subscribing to the multitude of others. One thing I do, however, on the expensive side is 3-D print, which can be the expensive side and counter to what I talked about previously, but more of an interest for me since I do design work. You would be amazed how the combination of 3-D printing and crafting can make things with that extra wow factor.

I know where you could have improved these blocks. If you had used a dice number system. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, were the opposite side would equal up to 7. But change the 6 hole side with 9 holes. This would have made it easier to hide the holes when building your terrian. This would have made all even number sides match up, and and all odd numbers sides match up with the odd sides.

Let me know if you find a source, I'll crowdsource a list for people. It's weird that you're having a harder time in the US, usually it's the other way around! I've seen other crafters use some thick foam before, so hopefully it's just a matter of finding the right supplier!
@RPArchiveOfficial
@RPArchiveOfficial 3 года назад
@Kid Buu you definitely could, if you're gluing them after cutting either tacky glue or a thin layer of hot glue should work fine, just bear in mind a thick layer of hot glue can add a fraction of height which when you stack them up can mess with your measurements :) for filling the gaps check out my kobold tunnels video, I show how to hide magnets using milliput or modelling compound on that build. I'd recommend making the join slightly recessed and indented so the dry compound or putty doesn't scrape against other blocks and scratch off paint, it's more prone to that than foam is (milliput less so than compound) :)

Great system you’ve developed here. One question, how do you measure movement for baddies and PC’s? A cloth tape measure?
@RPArchiveOfficial
@RPArchiveOfficial 3 года назад
Pretty much, I keep tape measures at the table and if players want to check they'll definitely be in range if they're planning something they can just ask. I've got a good group and we never play adversarially so it's not the kind of info I would ever use against the player or change the monsters behaviour or whatever. I think I mention more about playing with a tape measure in my first video on the channel if you've not done it before :)

I wa wondering, since you live in the Uk, would you mind trying to do a video where you compare the grey foam you use, the green foam found commonly in germany, and the blue and pink foams found more in North America?

If cost is an issue, and you are dead set on doing that, you could make it wider known that you have plans for this, im sure, people would be happy to help fund a video like that, even shipping foam from their areas to you. RP Archive oh I’m sure it’s more practical and likely far cheaper to craft from scratch, but I’m certainly lazier! I havent finished watching yet but I'm in love with all of your modular stuff! Question: what is preventing you from using magnets instead of the 45 degree angle sticks? I much prefer magnets and have been trying to figure a way integrate them in this. Otherwise. Wow. This is such an amazing idea to make modular mountain and cliff and cave stuff. Brilliant as always!
@RPArchiveOfficial
@RPArchiveOfficial 3 года назад
Thanks Kate! So, honestly, I did play around with the magnets and it's not totally impossible to do, it's just a lot more work, cost and that I'm not sure many people are up for, so I went back to the sticks as a nice easy solution. Honestly though they're a lot easier to use than the half inch versions I used in the first version of the wood tiles, so thus far I'm fairly happy using them instead of magnets anyway. It also combines well with allowing accessories anywhere and makes overhanging blocks plenty secure :)

Hi man, this is a bit late but hopefully you still see this :S I'm a big fan of your channel and your work, and I particularly love these mountain blocks along with your cave tiles! I do have one question though: did you manage to find a method to consistently cut the inverted corner blocks (the ones you said could potentially be optional) on the hot wire cutter? I'm getting ready to finally make myself a set of more vertical blocks and stuff, and I can't seem to get my head around it in any easy way besides setting up an angled jig on my proxxon. Would love to hear your take on it, as I feel like I may well just be overthinking it! :') Thanks again for the fantastic content!
@RPArchiveOfficial
@RPArchiveOfficial 3 года назад
For the angled corners I found it was easiest to draw on the templates, then just hold the piece manually and cut a chunk off just above the template lines on all sides. If you did this, you could then line the wire up with it at an angle and place other blocks of the same type flat on the proxxon, but you still wouldn't be able to use the guide because you'd need to hold the piece at a 45 degree angle to get the right cut still, if you see what I mean :)

i would look at stepped slopes rather than smooth, say three 1 inch tiers, irregular edges but space for a mini to stand on each tier of the piece for maximum gameplay

I have had just about everything I need to make terrain like this for a few years now, oh, all apart from the space Lol, about the only free space I have in my flat is my bed and I have to share that with a German Shepherd dog most of the time 😀 I made a few tiles (never painted them or fit magnets in them, yet) some time ago but they are buried under boxes of half-built kits & printed mini's waiting for paint also. I'm considering making some terrain to display things that I can mount on the wall as I have a few feet of clear space not big enough to fit shelving, hmm I need to move some of these built aircraft & space ships onto my roof, that should free up some shelf space so I could move some finished stuff away and enable me to finish some more Lol life is hard sometimes😉 I Do like your mounting magnets to everything! wonder if I could mount a dungeon on a wall? shame I don't have one big or clear enough but it is a good idea 🙂 worth investigating I believe, hmm a dungeon on my roof & a pole to move the mini's, I would have to use a small step ladder to put the tiles up, shame I don't think fitting a steel sheet up there is feasible, hmm **goes cross-eyed staring vacantly at the ceiling!**

@RPArchiveOfficial
@RPArchiveOfficial 2 года назад
Hi Tyler! Basically you want to use the angled block template to mark and hot wire cut off a solid chunk, then use the corner template (the wiggly one) on one corner, with all the triangles of the template pointing to the same corner, so to speak. Then just use a knife to trim down the foam until it matches the corner template lines :) you can have the corner either bulging or flat depending on how much you cut off from the 'middle' :)
