The first handguns issued by the North West Mounted Police (which would later become the modern RCMP) were 330 Adams revolvers, requisitioned by the new police service in March 1874, and shipped over from England. Upon their receipt in July of that year, the Mounties were dismayed to find thoroughly worn out Adams Mk I 5-shot conversions from old percussion revolvers. These were found totally unfit for frontier service, and an appeal was sent back to England for something better.
A replacement shipment arrived in October 1875, and this time they received 326 much better Adams MkIII revolvers (330 were shipped, but 4 were stolen in transit). The MkIII pattern was a purpose-made .450 Adams cartridge revolver, holding six shots with a double action trigger and solid frame. These served very well, and the. NWMP ordered more in 1880 - for which they instead received Enfield revolvers, which had replaced the Adams in British military service by that time.
The 326 Adams MkIII revolvers issued by the NWMP were marked by a local gunsmith upon their arrival. The right side of the frames are marked “C M.P.” (presumably Canada Mounted Police) and given a police inventory number just below the barrel (in addition to the serial number above the trigger). These issue numbers were defaced when the guns were sold out of service.

Sorry to inform you but cardston fort Macleod and all cities and towns in southern Alberta will become once again owned by the Blackfoot due to Canada breaking the treaties , cardston will be first then the hutterites will have to go then we will year down fort Macleod and build a beautiful town in the place now referred to as fort Macleod ,just like what happened in Nunavut , Vietnam , China and the country referred to as rHoDeSiA ,half of Oklahoma got given back to the native Americans and Tulsa and Oklahoma city are now owned by native Americans we'll ask China and Iran and Saudi Arabia for support in exchange for building naval ports and military bases along the US border it's a shame that Canada did not adhere to the treaties because that's the only thing that holds Canada together and anti-indigenous racism only pulls more and more people to our side ,and many of the immigrants will side with us because Canada broke British and Canadian law by not adhering to the treaties which means the land will be ours again and your fellow colonists and ancestors crimes will only fuel our fight

@asdrubale bisanzio Its not about that, the m16 is a much longer rifle and made using much heavier materials than modern m4s. So say your jumping out of a burning plane and you land behind enemy lines. An m16 will make the job of returning to the nearest base much tougher, and your not dealing with an AK. Your dealing with an M16, a gun that had a lot of problems in harsh conditions. Sure this war was in a desert, but last thing I want is to be the guy fighting a bunch of guys with AKs and guns built to last until the end of time with a gun built to survive one proxy war, that a majority of the soldiers came back mentally depleted.

The North-West Mounted Police were formed in response to the 1873 Cypress Hills Massacre, an encounter between Canadian and American wolf hunters and members of an Assiniboine tribe that resulted in the deaths of thirteen members of the native tribe and one "wolfer." The first detachment of the NWMP, consisting of 275 men, left Fort Dufferin (in the present province of Manitoba) on 8 July 1874; their objectives were to seize control of Fort Whoop-Up (a whisky-trading fort run by fur traders based out of Fort Benton in the U.S.) and to establish a presence in Fort Edmonton (a Hudson's Bay Company fur-trading fort). The detachment arrived at Fort Whoop-Up on 9 October 1874 and found that all but one of the inhabitants of Fort Whoop-Up had abandoned the fort well in advance of the NWMP's arrival; given that NWMP were armed with the Mk. I Adams revolvers (and single-shot Snyder-Enfield Carbine Mk. III's), this was probably a good thing for all involved.

My favorite western novel series is about a U.S. Marshal named Page Murdock who worked in the Montana territory. His sidearm of choice was a "Deane-Adams" as it is labelled in the books but the descriptions don't match the actual Deane-Adams revolvers that existed. They match these Adams revolvers. His is described as a 5-shot though, and funny Ian points out the length of the cylinder compared to the .450 Adams cartridge because in the books, Page says he can load his with .45 Colt cartridges. In one of the books he goes up into Canada and the officer from the NWMP who hosts him while having a snooty British attitude towards him for being an American lawman, he openly admires his preference for the Adams revolver. Since no one makes repros of the Adams revolvers, i like to pretend that my Ruger Lypseys edition half lug GP100 in .44 Special is a suitable stand in.

I'd love to know the story behind that little mix up at the armory. Stealing four of the replacements on top of the whole first shipment demonstrates a breathtaking level of contempt for their lordships. Did Armory Sgt Bilko show Leftenant Imbecile a shiny revolver, and then a crate full of greasy super well wrapped ringers that were just so icky that he signed for them without checking? Did they dutifully check every one, load it on a wagon and smoothly switch the crates after he signed? It was a classic pig in a poke armory move, substituting surplussed junk for brand new. You can bet that some patsy got thrown to the IG for Sgt Bilko's fun and profit. The only thing that could make it better would be if Leftenant Imbecile was Lord General Dude's precious son and it all got shuffled away over drinks at the Rag. That way there is a fire and all records of any irregularities back to 1700 vanish along with everything else in the armory, including the fixtures, without any possible repercussion for the good Sergent.

Mention velocity and all the .45 ACP fans come out 😉 From what I understand, no typical handgun round "puts so much energy into you it stops you", they either hit something vital and put holes in it or they don't. Velocity matters far more with rifles and again, from what I see most of them are pretty damn effective. If you place your rounds well, the size and speed are academic beyond a certain point. I don't think anyone has ever exclaimed "damn I'm glad he shot me with a 9mm not a .45!" and it goes the same the other way.
@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 3 года назад
I think the problem is that people "stay for the first class, but don't come for the rest of the semester," when it comes to how bullets actually do damage. They hear a couple of basic concepts, like kinetic energy, and of course, higher speed greatly increases that, so it seems to be important. What gets missed by most is that bullets are hitting something, and the interactions between the bullet and that something are what matter more in the end. Most of the factors are interrelated too, so a change in one variable will have an impact on other variables, resulting in very different results. What the bullet is made of, what it actually hitting, and such all matter equally, if not more, than its speed and mass.

The concept of not using their weapons likely evolved from the extremely poor quality ammunition supplied from Dominion Cartridge Company . So bad that the NWMP headquarters in Regina, Saskatchewan returned large orders due to much of the ammo not even firing. ( ref "Arms & Accoutrements of the Mounted Police, 1873-1973: The First One Hundred Years") . Better to talk your way to resolution than let your adversary know your ammo may not even fire.... haha. A lot of NWMP officers bought their own ammo for service use from Winchester for their own safety/piece of mind. Things never changed either, the CIL brand ammo of the 1960's and 70's was also very poor quality.... bang, pop, fizzle, KABOOM, pop, ....etc Nice video on the revolver. Cheers

Very common for the percussion revolvers such as the Remington 1858 or the percussion models of Adams, Kerr, and Starr revolvers. However for a cartridge revolver such as this it is probably very unlikely.

A tidbit of trivia regarding this model revolver: Sherlock Holmes' famous sidekick and chronicler, Dr. John H. Watson is regularly featured in the cannon stories with his "service revolver". Contrary to popular belief, the service revolver is not a Webley. It is actually the Adams Revolver and most probably the mark III. How he could fit such a substantial weapon in his pocket, I do not know.

@StutleyConstable
@StutleyConstable 3 года назад
@@ScottKenny1978 Technically, you are correct. However, I think Watson would have been very aware of the available ammunition which was supplied by the military. It would make sense for him to purchase a weapon for which the ammunition was readily available. Also, as Watson was not a wealthy man, as evidenced by his need to take on a flatmate when he was mustered out of the army, he would have chosen a relatively inexpensive sidearm, perhaps going so far as to purchase one from another officer who was looking to upgrade to a newer weapon. It is also possible that he carried one of the older models converted from cap and ball.

Just a small point. Note the protruding ring (arbour?)at the front ,barrel end of the cylinder (where the numbers are. ) This enabled a loaded cylinder to be dropped into place ready for the axis pin to slide into position . This was on several Adams percussion revolvers too A handy feature in loading percussion guns particularly which were "a mite slow" to bring back into action in a fight. Also the "european " side swing ejection rod was not on all Adams some had a side mounted colt like ejection rod. Once again thanks Ian your presentations are a pleasure!
