Just wanted to confirm this method is awesome and a true wallet saver 8) thank you Twisted Jake. And just so others know, it could be even simpler! Instead of the backing plate, I just used the two 13mm bolts to mount the...rotopax mount onto the blank cover, paired with some plastic safe threadlocker. Jake's nylon lock nut method is probably more secure though? hehe, gl all. (5-10 minute job)

Why wouldn’t you just move the roof rack bars closer and split the rotopax mount between the tops of the 2 bars? Bolt each mount with a total of 4 bolts, 2 per support bar on each side of the rotopax mount.

That's the first thing I noticed. WTF didn't just he re-adjust the mount position on the bar & re-adjust the bar spacing. They are slotted for adjustabilty in both directions.

Hi !, quick question, if install and put gas container on top car, will it be hazard driving with hot temperature ? let say driving 5-8hrs under hot summer?

You're speaking to my soul right there!!! Maybe someday I'll do a video on it. I bought it bone stock in 1995 as my first car. It's now bodied, bagged, shaved everything including tailgate, etc. Etc. Needs half a day of love in the garage and ready to roll anywhere.

@@TwistedJake yes please do, although I'm in the offroad scene now, I'll always be a mini trucker at heart. A few of my buddies still have theirs sitting in their garage, it's a shame the scene isn't as popular as it was about 15 years ago when I was into it.

Ha. We just moved and the garage is still being used for reasons other than building my workbench in. Hopefully before too long I'll have a workbench and even maybe a little room to at least nose the 4runner in for oil changes and what not.

They're gonna splode in the sun. I have the same cans; they are best upright so you can loosen the cap a wee bit and auto-vent the pressure.
@TwistedJake
@TwistedJake 3 года назад
Pro tip, fuel doesn't contract or expand with temperature but air does. If you fill the cans as full as you can with no air they don't expand or contract. Mine barely change in size from freezing nights to hot days.
@TwistedJake
@TwistedJake 3 года назад
I don't know why I just realized this also but if you manually loosen the cap it is not auto venting. It's just venting.

Any issues since filming? I have a Prinsu and we're running Mojave Road at the end of the month. Need to find a spot to mount my 4 gallon Rotopax and like your idea. Wondering if there's been any issues at all?
@TwistedJake
@TwistedJake 3 года назад
I've had zero issues but if I were to do it again I'd use metal plates rather than plastic. Or at least give them a try. For the extra few bucks and few more minutes to drill I think they'd be worth it. I haven't experienced any issues with the plastic ones but I feel like the metal would just offer a little more peace of mind.

Where those plastic parts "UV" stabilized. That's a lot of weight to come off a 65mph on the road.
@TwistedJake
@TwistedJake 3 года назад
1) As a matter of fact UL PVC is UV protected. 2) Even if they weren't, UV only effects a very thin outer layer and doesn't change any of the typical properties of it.

Had the rotopax gas can laying flat leaked yet?

What was the defect on the Fuelpax? I'm torn between that and the Rotopax right now.
@TwistedJake
@TwistedJake 3 года назад
The seam started to split. It never leaked and there appeared to be an interior liner that was still good but the outer red plastic was splitting. In all fairness the Fuelpax had contracted and expanded a lot in it's lifetime. Watching the Rotopax in the temp/elevation changes it doesn't seem to expand or contract nearly as much. I'm pretty confident in the Rotopax but probably wouldn't do a Fuelpax again. Plus the Rotopax is a lot more low profile.

Do you ever have problems with the caps leaking/dripping with gas in the containers when sitting flat like that?
@TwistedJake
@TwistedJake 3 года назад
I've never had a drop leak ever but when hot summer hits I don't tend to leave it up there. We've been in the 90s for a couple months it seems, with a few days over 112 setting all time records, so I haven't been leaving it up there.

@@TwistedJake I realize that you're supposed to release the pressure in any auxiliary gas container daily in hot weather. It's getting difficult to get the correct hardware for these tanks. I had ordered one a couple of years ago and somehow it was reported delivered but never made it to my address. Hmmmmm. We have a camping trip coming up next month and although I made my own "rack" to store on the roof, it is quite heavy so will try to just lay it down like you do. Thanks.
@je5159
@je5159 3 года назад
How long did you have the fuelpax for? I just ordered one and will be putting it up horizontally (your original setup) and am doing a trip through Moab and Western Colorado and want to make sure I’ll be good as long as I burp the fuelpax appropriately.
@TwistedJake
@TwistedJake 3 года назад
Mine was about 2 years of constant life on the roof. If you burp it often you should be just fine.

@bigoneish

@@TwistedJake too much of a liability if you're not actually using the fuel frequently. Let's say With the sun hitting the container constantly it will bloat up and might start to leak all over the cab. Yes the probability is not too high but I'd rather have it in the bed than having some freak accident and have fuel all over me. It's just safer not carrying fuel on the roof of any car.
