Thank you! Just what I needed. I mounted the scope on my mini, tightning the mounting rings. Then put the scope on and snugged all the ring screws in rotation. then I took a look thru the scope, and was alarmed when I saw the front sight! The front sight was approx at the 5 o'clock position, no where near close enough, at this stage. now I see the error of my ways, at least as how it concerns mounting my scope. Again, Thank You!

I have followed this same procedure, as has my local gunsmith, on my MK II only to have the rings not remain in alignment and without significant lapping still moved and would put a bind in the scope if mounted. Ruger was no help what so ever and the rifle has sat for decades unused. My Ranch rifle on the other hand I could remove and remount the scope at will and have it always return to zero by simply turning the ring mount screws with a quarter.

This reminds of the summer of 1975, when I installed a 12X Leupold on my brand new Ruger M77V in .220 Swift. It hasn't been fired since 1998, (down in SW Texas) so it might be time to take it to the range again.

My shooting mentor loaned me one of those M77V in 220 Swift, and my hunting partner owns one as well. Very nice gun. I hadn't thought about being loaned that rifle for some time, and my mentor passed away some time ago, so it is nice to remember him. Good shooting.

When I was visiting my Mom in Junction Texas (in 1998), I let her shoot my M77V. I was amazed that she was keeping them inside a 1 inch X-ring @ 100 yards. A few years later, she had a local rancher boyfriend, who sold her his .220 Swift M77 (non-bull barrel).. I asked her why a lady over 70 years old, would want a .220 Swift rifle.?. She said, "Because he needed the money, and I liked your .220, plus this one was lighter, so..." She paid $200 for that 'mint' rifle and it came with a very nice Leupold on top. Anyways, she passed away this past summer. She is greatly missed..

I notice the rings seem to be different heights. I've had a gunsmith tell me that about Rugers but I can't tell by mine. In this video it looks as if the rear is taller than the front. Is that the case?

Good video. I just got a new Mini-14 and I am going to get a scope next. Typically. how close to a decent zero will you get after mounting one using the same steps you have outlined? Anywhere close?

I have a mini14 and ended up lapping the rings when mounting the scope. It was pretty much the same as a bolt action when adjusting the scope. I am getting about 5-inch groups at 100 yards, so getting a precise zero challenging. When getting a scope, remember that you will want to pull the handguard off the rifle at some point, and a 40 mm front objective could make that difficult. I recommend getting a small objective scope. Look at the Leupold VX-Freedom line and thin about a 1-4x20 or 2-7x32 (not sure if those numbers are exactly correct, but they are close). The scope rings that come with the rifle are also pretty tall so that the eye piece clears the rear sight.

Do I need the two different size rings as well for the old school M77?

I suggest calling Ruger. They will be able to help better than I can.

Use a level . Easy man, its not expensive. You used a lap tool so why not do the job correct . I call that half ass lazy.

It was never really clear how to use a level. First, most small levels are pretty cheap, so even if the rifle is level, is it really level. So, you get the gun in a vice or cradle. Then you find a flat spot in the receiver to rest the level and adjust the gun until it is level, and now you have to keep it level until you finish putting everything together. Now you get the scope in position and... use another level on the scope? There is not a flat spot on a lot of my scopes. Hang a plum line from the ceiling and get the vertical cross hair parallel? All the while, keeping the rifle still level. Then tighten everything down. I am not trying to be a jerk, I tried using a level a couple times and never got it to work.

Use a level to mark a straight line on a wall with a sharpie. With the gun level shine a flashlight through the scope. It will project the reticle onto the wall. Twist the scope until they line up and snug it down.

The base screws are not giant. The nuts are a large diameter with a slot big enough to use a quarter in a pinch. 30 inch pounds is all it takes.
