Mounting a TH8A shifter and Fanatec handbrake to a Playseat Challenge

First of all, apologies for the sniffling I was home sick with a cold this day. In this video I show you how to mount a handbrake and a shifter to a playseat challenge. This is the most robust solution I have found and it is a very easy to do with some parts from the hardware store. The most challenging aspect to this will be drilling into the frame and bending 12 gauge steel. Hope this video helps some people out.
Edit: 4 years later and it still works with no issues, very solid.

I have been using this setup for over a year now and it is holding up great!

Thanks for this video. It will help lots of people. Nice solid installation. Personally I used two motorcycle/scooter mirror mounts, plus a 90 degree steel plate for my shifter. Also rock solid, with no holes added to the playseat. I still think the playseat challenge is an under-appreciated solution to the sim rig question. Cheers from Canada.

Thanks for posting this. It looks like a good way to mount these accessories to the playseat challenge. Ideally, I'd like to avoid drilling into the chassis so I'm considering using some tube mounts but I'm not sure how they will hold up.

I think drilling holes in the tubes is a bad idea. The structure is flimsy as it is and each hole is adding a weak point. Better to spend the money on clamping methods. That way the playseat will hold up, not flex and sell for more money in the end if you need to get rid of it.

Well I have been using it for 4 years now and it's fine. Might depend on your weight though?
@batman3698

@@seand80 Well, I haven't drilled holes in mine so I have no experience in the matter. But the wheel flex up and down just from turning against the force feedback, and each of the holes cut away like 20-30% of the circumference of the tube in that spot. But if you don't notice the extra flex I guess it's fine.
@seand80
@seand80 3 года назад
@@batman3698 Nah there's no flex in that spot I just tried to bend it, impossible. The flex from the wheel comes from the plastic mount they use if you look under the wheel. Anyways if you don't want flex don't buy a challenge seat haha this is designed to be portable and is not the most sturdy rig. I have a GT Omega Art also (I have 2 full sim rigs in my house now) and that one is more solid but I would say go for an 80/20 rig if you want the ultimate solid rig and want to run a DD wheel.
@batman3698
@batman3698 3 года назад
@@seand80 Yeah the wheel plate is behind most of the flex indeed. I went with the challenge because I don't really have room for a permanent rig tho. I'm trying to circumvent the flex as much as possible tho. One idea I had was to add some rods from the front of the frame up to the wheel plate. I think that would help it out abit.

@@batman3698 I got mine for the same reason now I have a bigger house and a room just for gaming. But you are right there are probably ways to reinforce it if it bothers you. When I am in VR I don't feel like it bothers me that much. It is a great value though and I would still recommend the challenge despite the wheel wobble.

This is how playseat challenge should have predrilled holes from factory. Cause 90% of users will eventually need gear shift (and) handbrake. Really the steardiest playseat challenge gearshift solution i ve seen!

Thanks man. Yea I got tired of dealing with clamps and stuff. The drilling just works perfect and has held up for years. Never comes loose or needs adjusting, it just works.

Coming late with commentary but it happens that I have almost the same setup except hanbrake which I plan to buy. Now from what I see the distance from shifter to hanbrake isn't a bit too big? And more important question does it fold normally? I'm asking because I saw some people choosing Playseat beacuse of its price and they use it as a stationary rig. For me it's a no no. I have to be able to fold it and store it.
@seand80
@seand80 3 года назад
The shifter and handbrake do not affect the folding ability at all. The handbrake is perfect for me I can reach it with my elbow/arm around 145 degree angle if that makes sense. Well within my reach. I am 6'3 though so your mileage may vary. Children would probably struggle to reach it without putting a pillow in the chair. 4 years later I still have this setup and it still is working great.

Hi Sean and thank you for the video. Can you please just tell me if you can still close your seat or does it get in the way?

10:22 It does not get in the way, bolts in like normal

Plz for the love of god, don't drill holes in your seat. Look up Motorcycle mirror mounts. You can put those around your seat framing. They have an 22mm inner diameter. Fits perfect around the frame, and will not move, you can tighten it without running the risk of denting the round tubing and taking away its structural strenght. You can build on those and add whatever you want. An metal L-shape for example to mount your shifter on.

@seand80 4 года назад
2.5 years later my frame is fine and I have had 250lb men sitting in it. I tried clamping stuff to the frame and it always moved. Especially the e-brake the force on that thing is a ton. If it works for you though, great, this is what worked for me.

Isn't the handbreak kinda hard to reach while driving? I guess it all depends on the position u have ur playseat set up. Im driving in more of a "F1 position". Currently thinking of a way to mount my shifter and handbreak.
@seand80
@seand80 5 лет назад
Ideally I would have it about 6 inches forward, however I can reach it just fine. The shifter is perfect though.

What system are you playing on. And what do you have to do to make the fanatec handbrake work with the thrustmaster wheel?
@seand80
@seand80 4 года назад
I started playing on Xbox but I am playing only on PC now. The handbrake works fine you just plug it in USB. On Xbox I think some games do not support it though like Forza. In Dirt Rally it works though.

@@seand80 What size steel do you use to mount the shifter?
@JL-cn1qi
@JL-cn1qi 4 года назад
@@andrewwhite2863 Please look up Motorcycle mirror mounts. Use those around your frame to build from. DO NOT drill holes in hollow tube frame work. !!!
@seand80
@seand80 4 года назад
@@andrewwhite2863 I used 12 gauge steel anything less and I felt it flexing. I wanted it to be rock solid. This was my 3rd attempt mounting the shifter. First time I clamped it on and it would move. Second time I bolted it on using a piece of aluminum and it moved. Bolted on the 12 gauge steel and it hasn't moved in over 2 years.

Never take instructions on how to build something from someone who can’t properly name his tools and their respective sizes lol
