Bolts can be picked up on Amazon or at any parts store. You'll need to get ones that match the width of your motorcycle frame. The mounting bolt size is 3/8 by 16 thread size.

I enjoy taking long interstate rides. My tank normally gets me about 150 miles, but i always get a little nervous when it starts to get close to emptying. With this fuel bottle I have a little more piece of mind. It can take me an extra 15-20 miles to the nearest gas station. Being stranded in the middle of nowhere in a strange place is one of the worse things that can happen.

Important question is...Does it survive your bend test?

The big worry about carrying spare fuel on a motorcycle is the fireball you could have in an accident. especially if the container will be going to scape along the road surface if the bike goes over. I worked with someone some years ago who had a family member burnt to death in a car when another car rear-ended it and the spare fuel in a container in the boot ignited. It's a thought. A trip I'm going on shortly is over is 350 km before a fuel fill-up. I've done it before and just barely scraped in, so I'm taking some fuel next time.

How is that any different than the original gas tank of a motorcycle exploding into a huge fireball when in a crash ?

It's different because an aluminum water bottle will begin to corrode, and in many places it's illegal to store gasoline in an unapproved container. These are legal, and will not corrode.

Ordered this today. Brilliant! Thanks very much. Now that you've had it for awhile, do you feel confident that one clamp is enough, that it won't slide out at all? I was thinking that a wing nut might be good for the screw that holds the bottle -- easy to loosen at night, on the side of the road, in the cold, when you've run out of gas...also easier for someone to loosen and take the bottle though.

Ive had the bike garaged up for the last 2 months. So I havent ridden it much. But yes, I am confidant that one clamp will hold it well enough. (Obviously if you have space to mount 2, than do it, especially if you ride a ton)
@Mephistocephalic

JerryRigEverything People think you only need it if you're out in the desert or something, but it's not true. I was on the pennsylvania turnpike and the sign said next gas 30 miles. I said I can make that no prob. When I got there it said closed for renovations, next gas 25 miles or something like that. Why didn't they say that on the first sign? idiots. I sweated out those last miles -- engine was missing like it does when fuel is almost gone. I had 2 or 3 tenths of a gallon left when I filled up. Extra fuel can come in handy when you least expect there to be a problem.
@JerryRigEverything
@JerryRigEverything 10 лет назад
lol, dang! It literally pays for itself to be prepared. So much less stressful when riding. Ive been told that it is important to not leave the gas in the MSR bottle for more than a month or so. So make sure to cycle it through your tank when you fill up every now and then.
@Francois_Dupont

Ducati wtf? two exhaust? Honda discovered in the 70's that putting all the pipes into one actually help the cylinder evacuate the hot gasses and up the efficiency by 30%. all modern cars, bike and trucks have the pipe combined into one at some point. some cars just split them at the end to have the double tip look.
@TheBikerDodge

Do you need to remove this from the bike and then fill it with a funnel at the gas station, then put it back on the bike every time you use it?

This seems like a great idea but now that I'm thinking about it... What happens if you get yourself into a bad crash, this thing could literally explode or leak and cover you in fuel and flames o_0
@natesv04

No different than the fuel tank between your knees lol
@DJayAce4
@DJayAce4 Год назад
@@natesv04 Idk you're mounting those extra fuel holders in more exposed spots. I've crashed bikes three times in my lifetime of riding, and all three times my gas tank was the only piece unscratched and untouched, while all other fairings/pegs/ect got damaged. Crashing seems like it would most certainly come in contact with any mounted fuel storage you add imo, way more so than the fuel tank in at least my experience.

Your bottle diameter is 3.25" but you are recommending a 2.5" clamp. Wouldn't a 3" clamp be optimal? I'm surprised it even fits with the 2.5 clamp.

So thats just extra fuel to pour into the tank when you are stopped? Not a bad idea. I found a gas tank from an old Tomos that would fit perfectly as a gravity-fed auxiliary tank for my SuperCub. I'm trying to think how to rig it

Have you noticed any leak of gas out the bottle at all?
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 6 лет назад
If it's not plumbed into the existing motorcycle fuel system, all you've got there is an overpriced small external jerry can. I used to carry a 2-liter soft drink bottle filled with gasoline for an emergency fuel container on a motorcycle. I would try to never have to use it, but it was there, just in case I got too close to empty and there was no nearby towns around (i.e. in the middle of B.F.E.). My next aux fuel tank will be a 5g one and it will be plumbed into my fuel system with a valve that I can use turn the fuel flow on or off.
@WTFisjuice1
@WTFisjuice1 6 лет назад
Grumpy OldMan 5g is a lot there man I’m guessing you got a pretty big touring bike or something though am I right?
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 6 лет назад
+Eric Loiselle It's a Harley FLHPI (Police Road King). The normal take is supposedly 5g, so being able to double it for long rides in remote places would be nice. I actually tested out the capacity awhile back, but it only worked out to be 4g. The air tank I made it from advertises itself as a 5g one, so I guess I should feel cheated. Turned out that I had a slight pinhole in my brazing of the filler fitting to the main body of the tank and gas could splash out of it. It also turned out that the pain I was using (Rustoleum hammered finish oil paint) is NOT fuel-resistant, so I had to strip it all off back to the bare metal. I ended up powdercoating it white instead. And then the weather did not cooperate, so the trip down to Mexico that I had planned for a few weeks ago never happened. Oh well...
@WTFisjuice1
@WTFisjuice1 6 лет назад
Yea I have an r6 at 4.5 gallons and idk where the hell id mount anything bigger than these, and I agree with you I would want to mount them inside fenders best I can and plumb it to a T fitting before my fuel pump and just put a valve somewhere hidden to open up that line when I run out, then straight to a gas station.
@WTFisjuice1
@WTFisjuice1 6 лет назад
Grumpy OldMan also strip that tank bare polish all the rust of(use like a metal brush attached to a drill or something) sand it bare till it’s a nice stock stainless and just oil it every month, thing will look badass and you’ll get loads of compliments

@seavil17 11 лет назад
Sweet! great ideas. You can get more miles by putting 100 octane unleaded in the spare container it should only cost 6 bucks to fill
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 6 лет назад
Unless your engine can make use of the extra octane, putting a higher grade of gas in it does not make a difference in your fuel economy / range. Just use whatever the manufacturer says you must use. Some engines are designed to run on a higher octane, but in an emergency, they can use a lower octane and the engine will self-adjust its timing to prevent knocking. Of course this will result in the loss of a bit of horsepower, but very few people regularly use all the horsepower that their engines produce anyway.

@JerryRigEverything

shopnoraj The metal of the extra fuel canister is just as thick if not MORE thick than the metal on your gas tank. So if your bike is going to explode.... it'll be from the 3 gallons in your main tank, and not the few cups in your backup tank.
@taroksoft
@taroksoft 8 лет назад
correct, but the side of your bike is naturally more exposed to damage if you fall on that side compared to your main tank. I think it's not worth it, and plus i don't find it to look very good on your bike.
