The final phase of fabrication has arrived as this truck is ready to have its rear shocks mounted. First, some careful measuring needs to be done so the placement is correct. It has been a bumpy ride, but the back of this truck is nearly complete.

This guy is THE ONLY ONE I've found on YT that did a proper frame repair. Everyone else uses that Safe-T-Cap stuff, they slide it over the rotted metal and weld it in place; all that does is trap the moisture. I am in the process of fixing my 2003 frame, I am chopping out the bad metal and adding new .125 thick metal, that's how you fix these frames for the long haul. BTW, my frame was replaced in 2008, and it was junk 10 years later, that means Toyota is still using junk steel...

Exactly! I weighed out all of the options and decided to tear into the frame myself. Originally, I tried to find a new frame, then a clean, used frame, and even the Safe-T-Cap pieces. New frames are obsolete, used frames are hard to find and expensive to ship. The capping process was enticing, but I knew it would never address the deeper issues. They are more of a bandaid repair. I am really happy with how my truck has turned out so far.

I think that your attention to detail, work ethic and thought process are unparalleled on this type Toyota restoration. The articulated visual aids are awesome! Nothing works so sweetly as the home made article.🙂

Only thing i'ld suggest is to make yourself several sets of the lower spacers so you don't have to try and get them out of the bushings come the next shock change

Not a bad idea! These should last a good while.

I really appreciate these videos. You’ve done a great job of explaining the whole process and have helped to increase my confidence in repairing my own Tacoma frame. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but how did you pick up your metal working and fabrication skills? Do you do this for a living? I only ask because I’m starting from zero skills and want to know what type of path to take to improve and be able to emulate some of what you’re doing. Thanks. Keep the updates coming.

That is great! I'm glad that the videos are helping others. Even if, at the very least, it shows people what to expect or what to look for when buying one of these trucks. I started working on things at a young age with my Dad in the garage and learned a lot. I worked in several automotive shops before going through a high-performance program at a Tech College. After that, I hired into a professional racing team where I did fabrication, machining, engine building, designing custom parts, CAD work, race car mechanics, carbon fiber composites, and much more for nearly a decade. That job was fun but took up too much of my free time, and I was often traveling the country all year long to various races. I learned a lot but keep trying to learn and perfect my skills whenever I can.

Haha, Yes Lee, paint. First, I will be coating the inside of the frame. Then I have a two stage system to coat the outside. Unfortunately, they were all out of hot pink, so I opted for black 😄
