I think a major reason the show is the most popular show on Apple TV globally is because it is a rare American show that is quite authentic to football and you can tell one of the writers has a good knowledge of football with the inside jokes about football. From the character Roy Kent, who is clearly based off a real football player Roy Keane, to the cynical abusive fans who are nice when they are face to face with players to football staff and media. That is the it’s USP an American sitcom based in British football

If you don't know football you can find it funny on a surface level, but if you know football there are so many more layers of humour and inside jokes, which is why the show is so globally popular because most people outside of America know football. You are completely wrong to say football is not a major part of the show. It drives plot, sets up scenarios, drives most of the humour and many of the characters are base on people or things that happen in real football.
