On July 15, 2024, which coincides with the 9th of Muharram and the day of Tasu'a, my friends and I went to the village of Soome'eh Alia, which is a suburb of the city of Miandoab.
Tasu'a is a day when Shiite Muslims mourn and commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his loyal companions on the day of Ashura in Karbala. This day is very important in Islamic history, and people around the world solemnly remember the Prophet of Islam and his family.
On this day, mourning ceremonies are held with recitation of foundational and epic stories from the life of Imam Hussain (AS), speeches, and elegies. People express their emotions by wearing black clothes, beating their chests, and singing. Additionally, in some places, they organize religious-themed events for children with dolls to remind them why Imam Hussain (AS) is held in such high esteem.
The mourning period begins on the day of Imam Hussain's departure to the Wahab courtyard in Kufa and starts on the 2nd of Muharram. These mourning rituals continue until the day of Ashura, especially, during which chest-beating, chains, and self-flagellation rituals are performed.
