This is the best explanation I have seen. Thank you for your time putting this on youtube. I am planning a trip from VA to South Florida, this will be a big help.
Now you can use MyMaps on google. www.google.com/maps/d/ After you have set your route, name the map, then to the right of your map name, you see 3 dots, click them. The drop down menu lets your export to KLM/KLZ. pick klm, it will be saved on your hard drive. use Basecamp IMPORT and you are all set.
GPS Visualizer now displays this message: "Due to dramatic reductions in Google's quotas, you can no longer convert Google directions URLs unless you supply your own API key. See www.gpsvisualizer.com/misc/google_api_keys.html for more information". Entering the link given into the browser brings up another page on the GPSV site. Scroll down to Option 2: Use My Maps & follow those instructions & it's almost as easy as the method shown in the video. Just added a 60 mile route to my Garmin eTrex 20x with very little effort indeed! Thank you GuerillaBill!
You cannot do this as easily now, you now have to first acquire an API key each time in order to do this. Obviously this is done by Google in order to make things more complicated.
Wow this is great. And perfect timing. I will have to try this because I'm planning a trip from Fl to Canada and definitely want to make my own route. I prefer my Garmin in my car than google on my phone.
Many thanks for this great tip and for loading video. Really useful for me when plotting cycle routes. Google OK for short journeys but eats up battery and data on longer ones. So being able to export to my Garmin Edge touring will make it much easier.
You can set up your places by adding layers and saving your map. First you need to create the map, my places, maps, CREATE MAP. If you don't know how to do this See this video (Copy this watch?v=5MPhCDp7iTY&t=64s & paste it after .com after the youtube address... it will be very helpful. It's the one I used to learn how to do this. After creating your map, to access from your phone, go to my places, maps, select the map, view legend, then come out to main menu again, look for your map that should now be listed, scroll down and select it, then select the GO icon, scroll all the way down past recent and past history and click continue to (and you should see your first stop and the number of stops following that stop). I hope this helps.
Bill - I created the route in Google, did the convert in GPS Visualizer, imported it into basecamp, and sent it to my Garmin Nav VI. The Nav VI converted the track to a trip, and in the map I could see all the turns I wanted, but when I hit GO it just takes me using the shortest route, ignoring all the turns I had put in. I don't have "shortest route" selected. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. . . .Jim C
Jim, To get some Garmin devices to follow a custom route, you have to change the guidance mode to Direct Routing. Garmin writes about this at support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=hI5Paqtfzi7dmVRPUXQvD6
This is great advice and I followed the directions as indicated...however, when turn on the GPS I can't find the loaded map. It's not under "saved", "recent" or "favorites" etc. It's a Garmin DriveSmart 51. So I assume this particular model will not work.
Brilliant I always wanted to know how to do this! Very well spoken and laid out. Its a great way to make a custom road trip. Do you know if Waze can import these files?
I followed all the steps and it appears to download in basecamp to my Garmin Nuvi 2599. Now how do I find this file/download in the Nuvi 2599 to bring up the route and navigate??
Great explanation! Now, how do I build a map on Garmin Basecamp (GPX file) and send the turn by turn routing to Google maps to use on my smart phone. Most of my friends have smart phones so building an exact route and sharing it to everyone's smart phone would be great. Thx for any help.
Can you transfer a GPX-file via the Garmin Smartphone Link app on a phone instead of using Basecamp on a PC? Im trying to navigate custom routes on my garmin but not having access to a PC to do the transfer. Only a smartphone.
GPS Visualizer converted the Google route to GPX and imports to RideWithGPS however the turn by turn Cues are missing so voice navigation is not available.
This does not work for me. I have a Garmin DriveSmart 61-LMTS and all it does is put the the starting point and ending point as a selection under Saved Places. its not available as a route. I tried dropping the GPX file directly to my Garmin GPX folder, using Basecamp and using Garmin POI loader. All with the same results. Suggestions?
Works on my Garmin SmartDrive. Iin basecamp, you have to choose 'direct routing' in the route options. Details at forums.garmin.com/forum/mac-windows-software/windows-software/basecamp-aa/116476-
Does not work on a GARMIN 660RV GPS device. After saving the trips to the device memory card, I am unable to access the imported trips. Is there something I'm missing?
This does work in the Garmin 660RV. After you send the custom route to the connected 660, power down the 660 and then restart it. Then click 'where to', then click on 'trip planner', then 'saved trips'. The custom route will be there.
I agree - what with Google continually changing what can and can't be done with Maps, and the seemingly rather flaky nature of Garmin software (alarming to think they do systems for aviation!), I wish I'd saved the substantial cost of my motorcycle Zumo plus handlebar mount, and bought a waterproof case for my phone instead. Live and learn, eh?
After wasting half a day trying to get this to work I discovered that not all Garmin GPS devices allow you to enter routes via GPX files. This website gpstracklog.com/compare/garmin-nuvi-comparison-chart has a category for multi point routing some models yes and some no. My Drive-50LM and my Nuvi 52LM wouldn't do anything with the GPX file it was if it wasn't there. I tried using base camp to send a route which was also ignored.
There's an easier way now. Just post your Google Maps route url into mapstogpx.com/ and it will create and download a gpx file that can be imported into your GPS device.
Due to dramatic reductions in Google's quotas, you can no longer convert Google directions URLs unless you supply your own API key. See www.gpsvisualizer.com/misc/google_api_keys.html for more information. ---- :(
Hi Bill. Brilliant way of planning but when I import the file to BaseCamp and my Garmin 590 it completely screws up the route I have planned. Are my settings in my satnav wrong?
Yes I have tried that but you get a page of information which you somehow have to tranlate into a usable GPS, which you can then use in Basecamp. Perhaps you can pass one how to do that. Appreciated.
you do NOT need to acquire an API key if you only need to convert Google Map routes to GPX! go to this page, which launched when I clicked "CONVERT" www.gpsvisualizer.com/misc/google_api_keys.html, and scroll to the bottom purple text box "Using "My Maps" to convert Google directions (no API Key required)" .
