About Atmos and stereo: Most surround receivers have a per channel output via cinch or XLR which can be switched (or turned off per channel if not used in the latest Denon AVR's as to reduce interference). Also there are Atmos pre-amplifiers called processors. It is easy to use a great stereo amp to feed the main Left-Right channels or better still: three mono's to feed Left-Center-Right. The AVR's internal amplifiers can handle the effect channels only when needed and in stereo/direct mode will only pass through the audio to your external amp. Or just connect your DAC/record player to the external amp for stereo only.

I run a 7.2.4 using all external amps. I listen to SW mixes all the time. You are in for a treat! A lot of HT users just don't realize they could really show off their systems much better with an Atmos blu-ray over a 4k movie. Atmos is not used just for ambiance music. It can me in your face at times.

Yup! It's really incredible. I just don't understand all the hate from 2 channel guys. It's not like it mucks up your stereo mixes. If you don't want it, don't use it. For us home theater guys with 7 bed layers speakers it's quite amazing. I literally have my apple tv and avr set to play stereo when it's stereo and atmos when there's atmos. Can't wait to install my 4 height speakers. I'm renting so they will be on ceiling instead of in ceiling. They won't stand out too badly because I have 5.5" clouds that will help conceil them a bit. Will it look like a gorgeous two channel room? Nope, but I don't care. It will be fun and for those of us that like to run wire, and like take measurements and align subs and mains etc etc, atmos kicks ass. It ain't for everyone and the fact that he has to continuously say, "I'm not talking to you home theater guys" demonstrates he does understand, to some degree" this product might just not be for him. Once he hears it properly though, it might be all over..... welcome to the dark side my friend!

Hi there, I recently upgraded my home studio to be capable of mixing 7.1.4. It can really be an amazing listening experience as well as extremely enjoyable format to mix. I can answer a few questions that came up. 1. being able to compare various down-mix options is crucial to the mixing process and built into Atmos mixing with a process called re-rendering (including a completely separate render process for headphones). Presumably the demo in Munich will be a mixing demo, so all that Mr. Wilson would need to do is have his re-renders set up in the Atmos renderer, which is likely just part of his normal template. 2. Comparison to stereo could have 2 different forms: 1. The original stereo mix, 2. The folded down to 2.0 Atmos mix. In the case of catalog material, say The Beatles Abbey Road, if you go into Apple Music player preferences and disable Atmos, you're going to get the 1970 mix -a radical difference in many older catalog releases like that one. It seems that in high profile artists like that, AI tools and voodoo magic have been implemented to create some really stunning Atmos versions. For more recent music, typically the process is to bring up the tracks in stereo until you've matched the pre-existing stereo mix as closely as possible, then make panning and motion decisions from that starting point. In the future, and some mixers are starting to do this, one may start with the Atmos mix and then check stereo compatibility as an after thought. This is reminiscent of the transition from the early stereo days when the mono mix was the standard that the producer and band would sign off on, and then go home, leaving the stereo mix for the assistants to complete after hours.

I'm glad to see this comment having floated to the top. I'm an electronic artist that views ATMOS as the ultimate canvas to paint on. I too produce in ATMOS taking care to make sure the down mixes reflect the same essential mix decisions. This who say "ATMOS is dead" for music either aren't the creators committed to producing in ATMOS or don't see the value of engaging home theater fans in a way that showcases their ATMOS system for music.

I love to listen to John and his friends chat about Hifi while I'm driving. I find this channel extremely informative. But this format with the episodes airing in both audio and video is challenging. Defeating the height speakers during playback is theoretically possible. But you have to be able to enable them first. I actually did this to see if it works - and it does. It basically just gives you a surround 5.1 mix. I wouldn't get Atmos just for the music - but it's a nice bonus when I have it for movies anyway - and my "theatre" is set up for music first sound. And some of the Atmos mixes are pretty impressive - even on my meagre 5.1.2 setup with a pair of front bookshelf speakers on a shelf at near ceiling height (it's a small room).

Funny thing, I put a Denafrips Iris DDC on consignment at a local hifi shop, or at least I tried to. Before I could complete the paperwork, someone offered me $100 less than I paid for it. I had them pay the shop and the shop cut me a check for it minus their reasonable fee. The shop's only complaint was that two of their salesman were disappointed they didn't get a chance to purchase it first.

The RSD lines around the DC area were insane this year. I waited about 2.5 hours before I went and the line was still at least 100 people deep. Nearly everyone walked out with $150-$200 worth of merchandise. Everyone gets their turn in line order to get whatever they want (that's left) from the list handed out by the staff before proceeding into the rest of the store.

Hi John! The height/ceiling speakers are what makes Atmos, Atmos. A configuration of 5.1.2 & up is needed for the Atmos Playback to be enabled. Ideally the proper “baseline” is 7.1.4. AVR’s do not play Atmos for other configurations, it simply looks at speaker count & play a down conversion of 5.1. Or only 2 speakers, the stereo signal of the content.

Mr D, I wish to convey this thought to you in kindness: what you perceive as a great divide between music listening and movie listening is, for many of us (dare I guess most consumers) a ditch created by a garden hose, easily crossed. Consider how popular John Williams soundtracks are. Consider the excitement of the Telarc release of the 1812 Overture featuring real cannons. If you change your abode to a common house with studs and drywall and ceilings with crawlspace above, the placement of speakers and wire is not soul-crushing, no more than audiophile “room treatment. “ Buying two new speakers to flesh out a decade-old Dolby Surround system doesn’t suck up all the Christmas/holiday money either. As for breadth of titles - ah! There’s the old “first chicken or egg” problem. But I believe Apple gambles that movie listeners will be first-in with hardware, so sound mixers will eventually want in too. I’m 70, yet I expect to live to hear the day. Have you noticed how your John Williams soundtrack CD (stereo) isn’t as exciting as listening on Blu-Ray (multi-track)? Peace.

If you are seeing music live you aren’t really experiencing surround. Apart from a bit of slapback from whatever walls in the venue, it’s basically a two ear, stereo experience. I can’t see any point in classic pop and rock being remade in Atmos format. For film and tv, yes. For electronics and ambient, again it could be an amazing addition.

ATMOS, well done, at around 1:31:00 you mention that the ATMOS chip can remap an audio mix to send a sound to a different channel thus not losing the sound. not lot of people state this. Yes, please do a comparison when ATMOS is collapsed to 2 channel versus the CD 2 channel mix - interesting stuff. By the way, i have an ATMOS system (7.1.4) bought for audio.

I have a really odd ball Atmos system. I have a 4.1.2 system(no center channel). I use a tube integrated to power the front channels and use the receiver to power the other channels. I can switch it from multichannel using the receiver to just stereo listening using the tube amp so I have the best(I can afford)of both worlds. Even with my Atmos/music system, I have only listened to a handfull of Atmos tracks and zero full albums.

I realy liked the soud of the PX7 S2 (Best soundquality in this price segment, in my ear opinion) and the PI7 S2 are even great, pressure like over ears! Hi John, I use a stereo amp for stereo, but I also use a receiver for Atmos. I use Buchardt Audio’s i150 for the stereo amp to power the a pair of S400 Mk2 and a pair of SVS SB13 subs. I use the Marantz SR 8015 to power 4 heights, 2 front surrounds, 2 side surrounds, 2 rear surrounds and the center. The front speaker signals are outboarded to the i150. So in essence I have the best of both worlds. A stereo system and a 9.2.4 Atmos system. And yes, I only listen to Apple Music through my Apple TV 4K which is connected to the Marantz receiver.

Great video John thanks. I think there is one vital detail even us audiophiles have missed in our vinyl discourse. We all saw the epic MoFi vinyl digital omission scandal yet if that had not come to light no one would've complained. We are unanimous in saying that the earliest pressings in the 50s and 60s sound best even by today's technology but no one ever gave the reason. Here I dare tell the world the indisputable answer. The answer not only gives due credit to good engineers both Americans and Brits but most importantly, all systems at the time, without exception, from studios to domestic playback, used pure tube gear, that's end to end. So build a recording studio today that uses pure tube equipment especially mics stored on studer tape recorders then lets see how the pressing will sound in today's best of the best analog system.

I do enjoy the conversation style of this and the discussions help to identify some areas to explore but sorry guys when Srajan Ebaen says "current mode amplification totally disregards the cables electrical parameters altogether" - as I understand it the charateristics of cable are LRC dependent and passing a current through one will have an effect - however marginal it is not "disregarded". Yes I am being picky, but you are the expert audio informers. I think it is clever to introduce reference to an academic into the converstion to support the argument, if only in passing not in depth. Loved the bit about vinyl and the Plex part now that is useful to the every day audiophile - especially if like me you are a pensioner! (yes my hearing is old and there is no point in worrying about some of the esoteric stuff)

Atmos in just bed layer speakers is different in that there is no other way to get surround sound music from streaming that I'm aware of. At least not in the apple ecosystem. It would just be upmixed from 2 channel stereo to dolby surround which I don't like the sound of. Atmos sounds very different and items can be placed anywhere in the bed layer even without height speakers. The height speakers takes it to another level though.

Dolby say that for true Atmos you need a minimum of 7.1.4, I installed mine myself in 2019 with Monitor Audio speakers, Pioneer SC-LX 59 AV amp that allows me to use a Musical Fidelity amp for the front stereo speakers, the Pioneer controls the M/F volume for Atmos. Due to the length of my room I would like to fit two more speakers between the steroid fronts and the side surrounds, this would need a 13 channel AV amp again using my M/F amp. The extra speakers would allow a smoother transition of sound from sides to front or the other way. Music sometimes sounds good in Atmos but its not something that I need. My front speakers are now Acoustic energy 302

The whole EU/China import problem Johnny describes is strange to me. More a 'Germany' problem maybe. Here in the Netherlands import from China is very fast, and past the customs without extra payment. I guess the volume at the Dutch customs is so big, they just let is through from China. The real problem in my expercience is importing from the US to EU. You pay a lot more in the EU for Schiit products for example than the US customer. Custom payment at the door is a bitch, specially if you can't pay digitally. With DHL I get an email if there is extra payment. But in that regard Germany is also way behind it's neighbours. Some shops don't even accept debit cards!! Here, some shops don't accept cash anymore, debit cards only...

I have learned over the past years that hifi dealers and jounalists often only discuss „2 channel stereo“ OR „home cinema“. Multi channel music does not seem to be a topic here. The reason behind this is fairly simple - it is a niche and therefore not of relevance for them. I can understand that. I for one built up a multi channel system around a good stereo set-up over the years and ended up with a 7.2.6 Atmos configuration. Thus, both stereo and multi channel music sound stunning with that system. In my point of view the best results can be achieved by running separates (pre-pro combined with power amps). Moreover, sophisticated AV components come along with the powerful tool of having parametric EQ that allow you to do optimise bass reproduction in your room. My KEF Reference 3 do enormously profit from that. This topic is not really taken into account when comparing pure two channel amps with AV components.

A movies audio mix is one of the last things done before the movie hits theaters or streaming. By that point, there have been several delays. So then that time needs to be made up by rushing the atmos mix. Folks with trinnov av processors will happily tell you that many movies have a "fixed" channel audio mix to save time but still call it atmos. The technology to have discrete objects scaled up or down based on each person's speaker count is useless if the studios keep putting out half baked fake atmos movies. I do think that this systemic problem may not invade the music industry as much. One can hope.

A very enjoyable Podcast as always, but it left me pondering three questions, could LAIV be the subjectivists Topping and could it be as much catnip for reviewers as much as it is audiophiles. In the same way Topping appear to design their products to hit the right measurement numbers objectivists crave conversely LAIV seem to have designed a DAC with R2R, NOS, etc to tic the boxes subjectivist reviewers and audiophiles willingly hoover up as proof of greatness. Sprinkle in a internal shot of glitzy electronics and a pointless monochrome "hi-res" screen and is it job done for LAiV ... Or am i just an awful cynic stoking a niche culture war, and instead it's just a really good DAC at a great price point?

I helped (myself, help) my wife learn to appreciate HiFi by encouraging her to buy a Taylor Swift record on vinyl. ("Folklore," perhaps her most authentically mature work vs. just pop stuff.) Could she hear the difference vs. CD or Qobuz streaming? Oh yes, in two seconds. Other than that, I have no use for Swift (doesn't save me from having to listen to her records in the car, during dinner, Saturday mornings, Sunday mornings, etc.).

I see the end of the power amplifier arms race, but not the DAC. Now is simply not the time to spend over $1,000 on a DAC.

The makers of the Zu speakers need to take a leaf out of Vinshines book on European distributors. The cost to import their speakers including tax more or less doubles the cost! Which marks the Lindeman speakers as better value.

IMO, if they want to go international successfully, I would recommend them to get rid of this Chinese bling bling in their devices and focus solely on quality components. Another look may work to distinguish yourself on the market, but IMO this is over the top for a lot of audio enthousiasts outside Asia.

p.s don't mock the Californian listening to his vinyl by sight, they had some strong acid there. He's probably hearing more of a difference on his tab of california sunrise than you would with the best interconnects.

atmos again. if 99% of music consumers don't care (because they use mobiles and tiny earphones) and the remaining 1% that cares will not afford billion speakers needed, and considering the effort needed to produce an album which is like really compatible (I assume you need a different approach to recording and more mics) and understanding that all existing albums will remain in it's stereo nature (sometimes mono) I would say good luck Dolby.
@AnthonyValcic
@AnthonyValcic 3 месяца назад
Different recording techniques are not required, it is only in the mix. You could do experimental recording stuff with more mics, but it's not at all needed. Current practise for atmos mix is to recall the stereo mix, and then the panning and artistic 3D decisions could be a matter of a few hours extra mixing time after that. Atmos also includes a special rendering for headphones, likely the format that most people will hear Atmos on in the near future.

Hi John, Atmos for music only is a dead duck. Nobody does it. For movies however it’s a different story. I’ve never supplied or fitted Atmos for a music guy but nearly all cinema rooms we do ARE Atmos An no, without height speakers it’s pointless. Upward firing stuff is nonsense.
@jimfarrell4635
@jimfarrell4635 3 месяца назад
Indeed. You would be crazy to invest in an Atmos system just for music, but for movies, TV and gaming, with a side order of Peter Gabriel or Steven Wilson, it's great and to be welcomed. I agree about the up firing speakers, and wish you would explain to my wife why my Kefs need to go right up at the roof.
