After years of frustrations with the original MoveShootMove Rotator, I ended up getting the latest version of their tracker, the NOMAD, over Thanksgiving. It seems to be a more reliable platform, though they simplified the unit with only N and S as options when you turn it on.
They are always seeming to have a 10% off sale, so go check them out:

Thanks for the review Jeremy. I didn't have the consistency problem with my early MSM, but I typically wasn't doing more than a few shots of the MW in a row either. I absolutely was frustraighted with the constant loosening issue and poor setup to shoot process though. Looks like I will be upgrading.

I completely forgot to mention the set screw in the base plate as well, which adds another layer of anti-slip to the setup. So your V-plate (or ballhead or whatever) won't slip on the mounting plate anymore either. I had so much loctite on the MSM it was nuts, and it still fought me.

yo im looking at buying the MSM nomad but I cant find anywhere that mentions what type of tripod I need to buy and the last thing I wanna do is buy the wrong one and have to go through the hassle of returning, any advice would be greath thanks

It has an arca plate attached to the bottom of it, so any reasonably sturdy regular camera tripod that has a head that uses the arca system will work just fine. Some people go the extra bit and get a geared head to make alignment easier.

5min on a 50mm!!! That’s amazing. Thanks for sharing. Curious to know if You are using the wedge.

Wish I did but its just extra space so I just use my regular ballheads. Though I find myself a lot of times setting the tripod up with 1 leg facing north, getting the alignment close enough and then using the north facing leg to fine tune up/down. Granted, I wasn't keeping all of them, maybe half at best, but it was one of those things that I wanted to test as I really like my 5 min exposures so I don't have to crank the ISO and lose all those steps of dynamic range.

Thanks for the review, very valuable. I also get different results every time with MSM. This wastes valuable time and produces disappointing results. I'm already looking for another alternative, but I don't know what to choose. I would not like to buy MSM because I was disappointed with the quality of MSM 1.

Completely understandable, I was in the same boat, but when I saw they had addressed practically every issue I had with the MSM I decided to give them another chance. The set screw in the baseplate as well as the geared no-slip attachment were good fixes to my biggest pain points.

Thanks for your detailed review and sharing your experience. What's the benefit of using your lenshood whens hooting astro? Thank you.

It helps keep condensation from settling on the lens when it gets closer to the dew point. It also helps keep the random lights from hitting the front element and messing up the exposure.

I have the MSM but only used it a handful of times. I had inconsistencies but I figured it's because I was shooting at my roof, every step I made caused vibrations that would shake the damn thing. I do have to use it more when going on holidays though, I always take it with me but forget about it 😂

Yeah, gotta watch that transferred energy into the tripod. When I first started using the MSM and my Star Adventurer, I had the tripods as tall as they could be and I could zoom in on the screen and just watch the stars bounce around if I thought about breathing too closely to the unit. I spent a lot of time changing the setups around trying to minimize the shake. Bldgs are the worst, anything in the bldg moves, door closes, someone walks on the floor, the wind hits the wall, and the whole thing moves just enough. The annular eclipse in Oct I forgot how bad that was and ended up setting up my camera on the top of a parking garage :( I could see when a bus was driving by on the road next to the garage by how much the sun was bouncing around on the screen.

i am new at milkyway photography. and i have been looking at to buy the nomad. but i have no experience so im a little bit unsure wyat to get for a "propper" setup. i have a canon r5 with a irix 15mm¨

The Nomad would be perfect for that setup. That's all you need to get started and its still a great setup for wide angle Milky Way. It's how I got started at least, started with wide angle on the MSM, then started throwing longer lenses at more expensive trackers til I plateaued where I'm at currently.

Do you consider it a big deal if you can’t do time lapse? I think I can do time lapse in camera. Thanks for the video.

You mean not having the slower speeds available on the tracker? I have been happier with the timelapses I've done at 1/2 speed compared to the ones I've done tracking at normal speed, just because you get more than just the 1 part of the sky. As for doing timelapses in camera, that can be tricky. I know my camera has both required options available, but the kicker is that I can't use them both at the same time. So I just use a intervalometer instead, gives me a lot more reliable control.

Do you like the star focus filter? I am interested in both of these items but was curious about the filter.

It seemed to work pretty well when I tested it, you can see the test images in the video. Unfortunately, Ohio being Ohio, I haven't had a chance to use it since. Still trying to figure out how to get it usable with the lens hood on my telephoto.
