I saw this in theatres 3 times! I eventually nick-named this "JAMES BOND'S GREATEST HITS", since just about every action scene was a variation on something from a previous movie. Only years later did I slowly realize that almost nothing in the plot made any sense at all. By the way, the guy Bond killed in Austria was "Paul Foster" from "UFO". Michael Billington reportedly had auditioned for the part of Bond multiple times, but this was the closest he got. Shane Rimmer, in addition to being "Scott Tracy" in "THUNDERBIRDS", and having cameos in "YOLT" and "DIAMONDS", also had a cameo in the 1st "UFO" episode as a SHADO pilot. I think "SPY" may be his biggest, most high-profile role. He has a nice part in "THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT" (also 1977) as an airplane pilot who protects the plane from attacking pterodactyls and racks up a score of kills on the side of the plane. Both Barbara Bach & Richard Kiel were together in "FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE". Although he wasn't Ted Cassidy from "THE ADDAMS FAMILY", Richard Kiel did play villain henchmen in "THE MAN FROM UNCLE", "THE WILD WILD WEST" and "THE MONKEES". Curt Jurgens was supposed to be playing Blofeld, hence the similar plot to "YOLT" and the reference to Bond's wife having been killed, and Bond shooting him 4 TIMES! But the agreement between Albert Broccoli & Kevin McClory had run out, McClory intended to produce another version of "THUNDERBALL", and he hit Broccoli with a restraining order to prevent his using Blofeld & SPECTRE. Broccoli retaliated by hitting McClory with a series of "nuisance" lawsuits to try and prevent him from making his own competing Bond film. It's been argued by many fans as to whether Robert Brown, seen in this film, was playing the same character in the later films when he became Bond's boss, or if he was playing Bernard Lee's character after Lee passed away. I like to think he was Admiral Hargraves, not Sir Miles Messervy. Desmond Llewelyn once insisted the character of "Major Boothroyd" in "DR. NO" was not "Q", but clearly based on this film, he WAS. "Anya Amasova" got VERY irritating over the course of this movie, CONSTANTLY trying to "one-up" Bond. It seemed more "grammar school" than "professional" behavior to me. When you're that good, you don't have to keep trying to prove it.

Such a fun film. It's one of the perfect Bond films to introduce first time viewers. Happy to see Lyrith enjoyed it. As aside, regarding Barbara Bach, I actually think her lack of emotion works for the character. She's a spy and a certain cold and detached manner fits the character. Looking forward to Lyrith's reactions to the bat shit craziness of Moonraker.
@thursoberwick1948

Some Russian women are actually very like that in real life. Vaccilating (Vassily-ating?!) between emotionless and fiery. Having said that. Despite Lyrith's valid comment about her acting, I think her accent in this is okay. A lot of people when they do Russian accents go over the top. Amasova's is about right - it's very slightly Russian, with a touch of posh English (which is the kind of accent she would have been taught by the KGB)

Oh yes, the favorite movie that sir Roger enjoyed the most. And the first ever sir Roger Moore movie I enjoyed watching as a kid, and I would never be the same as I got propelled into the world of 007. As for the positives well Roger Moore has this at the top of his list of bond films, Richard Kiel as jaws is a great henchmen and was a good friend of Roger, not to mention Robert brown made his appearance in a bond film and also was a good friend with Roger too, as they worked together on the Saint and Ivanhoe the brave knight. So yeah overall great bond movie and Carly Simon with Marvin's music which he got some inspiration from the feegies. Just the perfect blend, keep up the great work. And I'll give me overall thoughts on each bond film when Roger's run is done.

Mission accomplished . Jeroen managed to convince Lyrith to enjoy a Bond movie, and one of the best, after the last few were a let down. Missed in the edited version Lyrith's two reactions on two killer zinger lines when the motorcycle goes flying over the cliff and Bond's line "All those feathers and he still can't fly" and when the magnet grabs Jaws "How does that grab you?". Look forward to Lyrith's reaction to see Jaws return next time and how they turned him into some unnecessary comic relief.

Major Boothroyd was the name used by the Fleming novels for the armourer. Geoffrey Boothroyd was a firearms specialist who provided a lot of guidance to Fleming in his novels (he introduced Fleming to the Walther PPK, which of course became Bond’s standard weapon). In Dr. No, he is referred to as Boothroyd as well (as opposed to Q).

Lyrith seemed surprised that Stromberg would "only" nuke New York and Moscow. Remember, this was during the Cold War, with both sides nervous about an attack from the other, and it was a given that any nuclear attack by one would result in a massive retaliation by the other. Mutually Assured Destruction, aptly abbreviated MAD. I'm not sure if the reference to Lurch in The Addams Family meant from the TV show (Ted Cassidy) or movies (Carel Struycken). Anyway, just like Richard Kiel (Jaws), they both suffered from acromegaly, which accounted for their great height, large hands and oversized jaw, so it's no wonder that you could confuse them.
@vitorafmonteiro
@vitorafmonteiro Год назад
Lyrith's joy when she figures out what is going to happen is infectious, and gets even better when you "cut her wings" with the "well, you get no awards for guessing that in a Bond film" attitude, lol. How she mostly watches silently thinking on what she's seeing and gets pissed when you answer her with "You'll see", while you enjoy the puns and sing (and play sax) along gives me Bond and Anya vibes in that lowering to the US submarine scene, lol. Also... you 2 used this one a lot for the snuggles from the look of it. Not criticising, otherwise it would be a waste of some good Hamlisch and Simon. The Lotus Esprit is like this film's soundtrack: it is VERY 70s to the point it just felt normal when it came out, but it is so stylish in its total seventies-ness that now it transcends dated into just being timeless.

Just saw something wild today. On the "VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA" Season 3, Part 1, Disc 3 DVD, they included a complete "VOYAGE" comic-book. The story involved "Dr. Gamma", a bald villain whose face you never saw, who was in the pilot, but never returned on the show. His sidekick, "Agent X", was a dead ringer for actor David Opatashu. At the climax, the Seaview is pulled into an underwater sub dock, which looked like it could have been the inspiration for the interior of The Liparus. It contained round elevators, just like the ones seen in Stromberg's "Atlantis", and on the upper level, there were windows thru which you could see sharks swimming. The only conclusion I can come to is that some of the design work on "THE SPY WHO LOVED ME" was inspired by this comic-book from the mid-60s!

For the scene where Jaws fights 007 and XXX, there was one small problem. An Egyptian representative was present to make sure no offensive remarks towards Egypt were put in the film. So Sir Roger Moore couldn't say "Egyptian builders" outloud. He had to mime it and dub it in. Ironically, when "The Spy Who Loved Me" was released in Egypt, the line got great laughs from Egyptian audiences.

Michael Billington gets the bullet in the famous ski chase, he was Paul Foster in Gerry Andersons UFO. Another Anderson stalwart, Shane Rimmer (Thunderbirds, space 1999, UFO, Space Police) pops up as the sub captain. The ski jump brought the house down in the cinema back in '77. We all knew he'd have a 'chute...just not that design!. BTW, if you watch it closely, the skis almost hit his parachute. There is a live version of the title song on YT by Carly Simon. The reason why they take the train down is pretty much that the movie shares a lot of the structure of From Russia with Love that played out in the 50-tys. A lot of bond movies is effectively the same movie. And some movies mix them up. Bond teaming up with a Russian agent is repeated in From Russia with Love , The spy who loved me, GoldenEye . In Tomorrow Never Dies its still sort of the same plot, but its replaced by a Chinese Spy. The plot of A villin attacking both the west and the east (usualy UK and USSR, but not always) are also repeated in a lot of movies. This one of cause, but also GoldenEye and Tomorrow never dies. Probobly some that i missed

The Spy Who Loved Me! This Bond movie, in my opinion and many people seem to agree, is a kind of reboot of You Only Live Twice only instead of a volcano we have a giant tanker which to me, is better! It’s more believable! It’s an interesting fact that the man Bond kills in the pre-title sequence, Triple X’s boyfriend was actor Michael Billington, known for appearing in Gerry Anderson’s UFO but he also auditioned to play James Bond when Connery cut out the first time and Lazenby got the role! Billington was considered too tall for the producers! The Union Jack parachute stunt done by Rick Sylvester had a two week wait due to bad weather conditions but in the end it was done in one take though one of the skis almost tore the parachute but it ended well! Here’s a little test for you! During the pyramid scene, the voice that comments the scene should be known to all if you listen carefully! The actor behind that voice appeared in two earlier James Bond films both with Sean Connery! Once in You Only Live Twice and the other, in Diamonds Are Forever! I speak of course, of Charles Gray! An interesting fact is the first appearance of General Gogol who we will see quite regularly until the last time we see him in The Living Daylights! BUT…..!!!!! Do you recognize the actor?Walter Gotell who appeared in the second Bond film From Russia With Love in the role of Morzeny! The chief of SPECTRE island who kicks Kronsteen in the shin then runs the boat chase against Bond in the Adriatic, which actually, was filmed in Scotland, but whatever! There is one moment that doesn’t seem cool knowing the two agents! When Bond drive the Lotus Esprit into the sea, Anya seem shocked almost scared and a few moments later she presses a button to release a mine then explains that she’d stolen the blueprints of the car two years early. So why the panic as they dive into the sea? I was always puzzled about that! Karl Strongberg is supposed to have webbed hands and yet we hardly ever see them! It’s a pity! As the Lotus emerges from the sea and Bond throws a fish out of the window, we see a man with a bottle ,half drunk, who looks completely baffled! He’ll appear in the next two Bonds in the same situation! His name was Victor Torjansky! Also note that once again we see Shane Rimmer who used to dub the voice of Scott Tracy in the series Thunderbirds and will appear in three Bond films in different roles! Here, the score wasn’t done by John Barry but by Marvin Hamlisch who four years previously scored The Sting! He also composed the song, Nobody Does It Better and the lyrics were written by Carole Bayer Sager and of course it was sung by Carly Simon! Interesting to note that it was the first time since the beginning of the franchise that the title of the film wasn’t in the song! Apart from Dr. No, From Russia With Love, though it is sung at the end and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service which were all instrumental themes! We also see James Bond on one of the very first jet-skis! Don’t forget, we’re in 1997! When Bond fires the gun through Strongbergs long gun barrel under the table it seems false because of the gun mechanism! At the top of the barrel there would have been the firing mechanism which would have shielded Strongberg from receiving the bullet! But, whatever! And of course, once again, we end with Bond and the girl in a boat! Well actually, it’s a mini sub but it’s all the same anyway! All good clean fun!

This is one of my favourite Bond films, but I just don’t really rate Lewis Gilbert as a director. I still don’t believe he can depict Bond as a serious field agent, & even in this one I think there are some unnecessary comedy moments with Jaws, like crashing a car into the old Italian guy’s house & emerging without a scratch on him.
