That's a good point about Largo physically taking part in plans, being that he's so far up the Spectre organization hierarchy. I tend to rationalize it by theorizing that one of the reasons why Largo was #2, was because of how proactive he was. Actually choosing to be a present commander, rather than just giving orders.

During the height of the Cold War, there were planes in the air, armed with nuclear weapons, 24/7. My grandpa flew B-58s, the first supersonic bombers, and basically his purpose was to be ready at any given time to fly Mach 2 over to the USSR and drop a nuke on a specified target if nuclear war were to break out.

29:21 You *_can_* in fact change a mask underwater, and get all the water out of it too. It's very easy. They teach you it when you try scuba diving, as your mask will inevitably get some water in it. All you need to do is lift the bottom of the mask so it's slightly away from your cheeks, then tilt your had back while exhaling at the same time. All the air bubbles enter the mask and displace the water, forcing it out. There's plenty of videos on RU-vid demonstrating it. E.g.: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s5tTCj_POFM.html

Your girlfriend was very observant and clever. The films had taken off then and I think they spent more on Thunderball than the 3 previous ones together. I was born the year this was made and it was just normal seeing the hero treat women like this then. You can see how much offence it caused your girlfriend who has grown up in a different period where how her behaved would result in a criminal prosecution now.

I think Goldfinger is more highly regarded, but I just enjoy Thunderball a lot more. I think the fact it is concentrated mostly in the Bahamas benefits it, there is danger, death, sex, intrigue , just a melting pot of ingredients that make it one of the best Bonds. Goldfinger reached a peak in the franchise and thunderball was about the gadgets and bond is used to keep the plot moving and it gets worse with the hardware in the next film. One reason majesty is highly regarded because bond is back as a real person. Connery still gives a good performance here but just walks in the role in twice.

23:00 Speaking of Sharks, those Sharks in the pool, the ones James Bond swam by to escape… those were freaking real sharks and Sean Connery actually had to swim that close to them to make that scene!! You can NOT make scenes like that anymore! That is instant lawsuit from the Insurance agency.

Nice video! To me, "Thunderball" was a little slow paced to me, but it was very close to the source material. The dialogue was less clever and too much one-liners. But, the gadgets! One of which Bond strapped to his back takes the cake! I would leave a trail of yellow myself if I was "whizzing" through the water looking like a fool. This film started to go to the direction of the dependency of gadgets versus Bond's ingenuity and skill. If there should be gadgets, let the villains have the gadgets which Bond should overcome. BTW - Placing a dive mask on under water and filling it with air is something divers need to accomplish toward their Padi or Naui certification. Obviously you need your source of air, your lungs, and exhale through your nose while holding the upper part of you mask to your face allowing the water to escape from the bottom. Great video! And, you two look very good together!

Are nuclear devices carried during training flights, yes. How many nuclear devices have been lost? In many cases, the weapons were dropped by mistake or jettisoned during an emergency, then later recovered. But three US bombs have gone missing altogether - they're still out there to this day, lurking in swamps, fields and oceans across the planet.

Speaking of gadgets and technologies. The Bond gadgets became the inspiration of a lot of gadgets or weapons that were created by the military for real secret agents. The suitcase, the pen with cameras, the breathing apparatus. And so on… In fact the DAARPA always follows these movies to get inspiration for any new gadgets or technology ones they can actually invent.

Lyrith’s reaction to James Bond these days definitely says something about the optics and new reactionary policies of today compared to back then. James Bond was created as the peak of masculinity: men wanted to be him, women wanted to be with him. People say that they were shocked when the 3rd Bond Girl, Honey Rider, in the first movie appeared on screen in a bathing suit was completely against social norms of those times. The franchise itself was against social norms of those times because you could not show female nudity almost at all. The James Bond movies was the first franchise that broke that social norm and with each movie it tried to break more norms. The fact that people assume that he is a rapist instead of a trailblazer for new ground in movies is a bit disappointing. It would be an argument like: well why are you showing wars in movie? to promote violence? Nope, it’s because people back then liked movies about wars.

Thunderball was absolute cool when it came out...At the time, there was nothing remotely close to action sequences(particularly the underwater)/gadgets/technology portrayed in the Bond films. And as a 9 year old when it was released, me and my friends all had the Thunderball lunchbox and the Thunderball board Game. Women loved Tom Jones. He was the ladies heartthrob---who was a huge star singer back then--sang the theme song.

"Too much characters in this one." YES!!! This movie was a result of a dozen script drafts done around 1959, followed by a novelization in 1960, and then several more script drafts in 1965 (based on the earlier script drafts, completely ignoring Fleming's novelization version). There's too much of EVERYTHING in this movie, it's too complicated, and there's not enough screen-time to develop any of the characters-- Largo, Domino, Felix, not even Bond himself. I much prefer the novel, except Fiona, crazy enough, is not in it. The pre-credit sequence, where Bond goes after someone, and strangles them to death, actually comes from the scene in "You Only Live Twice" where Bond breaks BLOFELD's neck. In the book, it's Domino's brother who actually sells out to SPECTRE and steals the plane, not an imposter. The whole thing with plastic surgery and an imposter adds an unnecessary complication to it. And it goes on from there. Making Felix a mystery early-on was a left-over from when "TB" was supposed to be the "first" Bond film. That idea wound up in "DR. NO", so it should never have been re-used here. I would have had Fiona survive the outdoor restaurant scene, and be the one who tried to kill him on the beach-- only to be killed herself with the SPEAR gun. Would have given her a bit more screen time. "THUNDERBALL" has always been a movie that, to me, SHOULD have been a lot better than it was. Among many other things... they initially cast Raquel Welch as Domino, and there's publicity photos of her wearing that one-piece bikini. But the studio she had a contract with used the publicity for their own benefit, then yanked her away to do "FANTASTIC VOYAGE" instead. "TB" would have been a much-better script for her to show off her acting ability. She looks nice in "FV" but doesn't get to DO as much. Tsk! (Also, it's purely personal taste, but I really like Raquel, while Claudine Auger never "did it" for me. Although, she was very impressive as a VILLAIN in one of the very last Jeremy Brett "SHERLOCK HOLMES" episodes, "The Three Gables" in 1994.) Adolpho Celi LOOKS great, but it's a shame he wound up having to be dubbed. I thought Telly Savalas would have been PERFECT as Largo-- he would have exuded a LOT more personality, and would not have needed dubbing. Again, I wish they could have gotten David Hedison as Felix, doing bits in Bond films in between episodes of "VOYAGE". George Pravda was okay, but I think Donald Pleasence would have been better as Kutze. Pravda really impressed me as the chief policeman in the Tom Baker DOCTOR WHO story, "The Deadly Assassin". Oh yeah, and imagine if George Sanders had been Blofeld in all these films! Finally, if end credits were as long back then as they are today... Dionne Warwick's "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" would have been perfect over the end credits. The song "Thunderball" is clearly the VILLAIN song; "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is BOND's song! They didn't have that kind of thing until the Dalton era.

Would love to see her reaction to Kevin McClurey's 1983 remake, "Never Say Never Again' and get her to compare the two. It may be controversial but despite the fact I understand what Thunderball meant for the franchise, all the new tropes it introduced and all the positive aspects of it...given a choice I would rather watch NSNA as I just enjoy it better primarily due to the fact the movie acknowledges Connery's age and makes jokes at his expense, the stellar supporting cast and the fact it doesn't spend forever showing off an underwater battle you really can't follow. IOW, I just find the latter film much more entertaining and less disjointed as I also feel Thunderball isn't edited the best and has some pacing issues.

There is one thing that bothers me in this film and it always has done! Actually, there a few things but this one really stands out for me because it’s so visible! In the end underwater battle, which actually goes on forever and ever just like the underwater sequence with the landing of the bomber, if you look carefully, when Bond has his blue mask ripped off, he looks around then takes off a black mask from a dead body and puts it on. The very next shot when we see him beckoning to the men, he’s wearing the blue mask again ! Very bad continuity ! And as I said, the underwater scenes do go on forever, they’re far too long especially the Bomber scenes where you see Largo’s men nailing the net at the bottom of the ocean! Incidentally, it is a known fact that in From Russia With Love and Thunderball, Blofeld is played by two people! The physical appearance with the white cat, where we never see the face, is played by Anthony Dawson, Prof Dent in Dr. No and the voice is that of Austrian actor Eric Pohlmann!

In the final fight scene of this film ya never really know but instead of dropping as Emilio Largo's clearly/obviously going 2 shoot her in the chest with Colt Detective Special 1st Gen .38 Special after getting Shot in the back by her via Speargun Domino Derval without Bulletproof/Bullet Resistant Armor Vest in a way is like you'll never have enough bullets 2 kill me Mister Largo/I'm far 2 strong 💪/tough 😤 4 your underlings bullets Mister Largo no matter how many/much of them ya empty in2 my chest right 2 the point where he shoots her multiple/several times in the chest with his underlings Colt Detective Special 1st Gen .38 Special she cackles like a hyena & continues cackling after/when getting hit in the chest by every round/more than every round from his underlings Colt Detective Special 1st Gen .38 Special hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Maybe not .45 ACP rounds (bullets) or .30 Carbine rounds (bullets) but ya never really know looks like Fiona Volpe probably is physically strong 💪 enough/physically tough 😤 enough of a fighter/villainess 2 survive/withstand being hit in the chest torso by more than 7 .380 ACP rounds (bullets) from Bond's Walther PPK, more than 8 ricocheted .25 ACP‎ rounds (bullets) from her own Beretta 950 Jetfire, more than 6 .38 Special rounds (bullets) as well as more than 10 9×19mm Parabellum rounds (bullets) without bulletproof/bullet resistant armor vest right 2 the point in hotel room scene with Bond plus Fiona Volpe as he's clearly/obviously going 2 shoot her in the chest after finding her out she cackles like hyena where she's in a way like you'll never have enough bullets 2 kill me Mister Bond/I'm far 2 strong 💪/tough 😤 4 your Walther's bullets Mister Bond he shoots her multiple/several times in the chest with that same Walther PPK & she continues cackling after/when getting hit in the chest by every round/more than every round from Bond's Walther PPK hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Ya also never really know but instead of getting hit in the back by .45 ACP round in the Nasau chase scene of this film Bond takes the underlings Smith and Wesson Model 36 .38 Special as he's clearly/obviously going 2 shoot her in the chest with it Fiona Volpe without Bulletproof/Bullet Resistant Armor Vest in a way is like you'll never have enough bullets 2 kill me Mister Bond/I'm far 2 strong 💪/tough 😤 4 my underlings bullets Mister Bond no matter how many/much of them ya empty in2 my chest right 2 the point where he shoots her multiple/several times in the chest with that same Smith and Wesson Model 36 .38 Special she cackles like a hyena & continues cackling after/when getting hit in the chest by every round/more than every round from her underlings Smith and Wesson Model 36 .38 Special hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

This is the worst of the original 5 Connery Bond films, the next one is much better.

When I was a child, Thunderball was one of my favorite Bond movies. I still love it, but I skip the shower sex scene because I know now that it's akin to a rape scene. Anyone else getting worried that at the end of No Time To Die the producers will anounce that Nomi will be the permanent replacement for Daniel Craig? For the most part I think that Nomi either dies in the line of duty, gets reassigned to another part of MI6, or resigned from the service. That's how Bond gets his 00 number back. I really hope that the producers are not thinking about making James Bond/007 a woman. It's a bad idea and the backlash would be incredible. Male James Bond (any color) is much better for the franchise. Perhaps Nomi could be in a future movie starring Nomi as a 00 agent with a different different 00 number.

Well I get why you feel that way. My only explanation was that the JB movies tried to break social norms of those times and intercourse at a spa was definitely a big no no. I think the puritans of those times would have given anything to have the social media network of today where they could spin it as rape and completely cancel James uBond. But the truth always comes to the surface in money or box office numbers and just like how 50 Shades of Gray is the most popular book among women as a average. Thunderball is the most financially successful movie of all James Bond movies with adjustment for inflation of course.
