Saw this movie in the theater on its opening night. Unless you were there, you can't imagine how magical it was to see this on the big screen (back when theaters really were BIG and not divided up into 12 smaller theaters) and when C, G, and I were just three letters of the alphabet. Leading up to opening night, the advertisements were all about "you will believe that a man can fly". The flying scenes were just light years beyond any other special effects (outside of Star Wars which came out the year before). Just a magical experience.

In 75, there was Jaws. In 77, Close Encounters and Star Wars. 78 came Superman. 79 saw Alien, Star Trek the Motion Picture and The Black Hole. Raiders of the Lost Ark in 81. What a great time for film.

The first feature film to use CGI as well as the composition of live-action film with CGI was Vertigo (1958), which used CGI in the opening credits of the film. The first feature film to make use of CGI with live action in the storyline of the film was the 1973 film Westworld - google

Fun trivia. When Clark is running next to the train, and the little kid (Lois Lane) tries to get her mom's attention, the women playing the mom was the original Lois Lane from the 50's TV series.

Well, aaactually, the first TV Lois was Phyllis Coates. She was replaced by Noel Neill, whom you see here, and who also had played Lois (with a much more 1940s hairdo!) in the Superman movie serials starring Kirk Alyn…who plays the little girl's father in this scene. One of a few sly nods to the real-world Superman history, including Clark being bemused by the open-style phone booth, a gag which is nowadays pretty opaque.
@majkus

The ad catch-phrase for the film was, 'You'll believe a man can fly.' But the real line should have been, 'You'll believe that Superman can pass himself off as Clark Kent.' Christopher Reeve's dual portrayal was a master class in acting. Facial expressions, body language…perfection.

Every time I get ready to re-watch this movie and think it's going to be cheesy and dated I am always proven wrong. The actual response I get is a sense of wonder that I felt as a kid when I saw this movie for the first time in 1978. The adult side of me is in awe of the vision that the movie makers had back then to bring this comic book world to life and made it so epic. They have managed to make one of my favorite childhood character movies into a timeless classic.

It was such a joy to watch this with you and seeing with through "new eyes". I ... love ... this movie. I remember my father telling me back in the summer of 1978 about a "Superman movie" coming out soon. Even at 11 years old, I recall being cynical enough to say to him that I thought they would mess it all up. Still, in December of that year, Dad took us kids to see it in one of the last remaining single-theater cinemas in town. It had a huge lobby with an incredible and classy chandelier and everything. We snuck in coolers of iced tea and hoagies, and even a cassette recorder as well, to capture the audio from the movie... all my Dad's idea, by the way. We were all AWESTRUCK at the spectacle that was "Superman: The Movie", and it was made extra sweet by my father's childlike wonder and glee at seeing his favorite superhero come to life in such a literally perfect way. I played that tape until the player itself finally stopped working. It's funny to have such an emotional attachment to a film as I do to this one. While it is a fantastic work of art to be sure, in my heart I know that the real reason is the eternal connection to my Dad that it gives me whenever I see it. For this reason above all, "Superman: The Movie", will always hold a special place in my heart that is more than just the love of a great film, far more indeed. It is the connection it gives me to the very first Superman I ever knew and loved, who I was so very blessed to call ... "Dad".

@donaldcordner1936 Those are lovely memories! It's also a great movie to see with your father in that fatherhood was one of the themes of the movie. Superman's two fathers were powerful mentors for him. I suspect, BTW, that you also have a Philadelphia connection with your Dad. Yo! :)

You have to remember they invented techniques in this movie that didn't exist and current effects are based on. Christopher Reeve was a pilot and he used his arms in flight as it would be aerodynamic as correct as possible. So the arms were controlling direction etc.

The Kryptonian suits were covered with the material movie screens were made from. Light was projected on them which made them glow. The same technique was used for the lightsabers in the first Star Wars a year before.

The mirror is just a cinematic device for dramatizing an old concept of Superman lore: The Phantom Zone. The Kryptonians were too humane to impose the death penalty on their criminals. Nor did they imprison them in what we call prisons or penitentiaries. Jor-El--Superman's father and Krypton's greatest scientist--discovered a parallel universe, a "Phantom Zone" and devised a means of sending matter and even people into the zone and retrieving them at will. He convinced the Kryptonian elders to use banishment into the Phantom Zone as a humane reform and replacement for Krypton's ancient methods of punishing their criminals. No one ever considered the prospect of Krypton's destruction while leaving the imprisoned inmates unintentionally stranded in the Zone for all eternity...

43:55 Mark! 17K Views + Mine! 😎 Thumb Up #771! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! 😊 Notes: Hmm. This is the first time that I gave Jor-El the benefit of a doubt, about not knowing how his brother saved Argo City when he told Kal-El that he was the sole survivor. Previously I let my knowledge of what was happening off stage and behind the scenes, block the idea. 🤔 At basically around the same time, we got both "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "Superman: The Movie". The former is a part of the television series that preceded it, while at first glance, the latter's title may seem to inform us that it too shares continuity with the previous series. However, it was meant to let us know that it isn't part of the old series! Hence the emphasis! (However, ugh, some software seems to prefer to write it as "Superman" (1978) now!) But in retrospect, it may be a "DC" tradition? There's the series "Batman" and "Batman: The Movie" and though actress Lee Meriwether replaced actress Julie Newmar, it does share continuity with the television series! 😅 At the time, television series inspired by movies, rebooted the story by starting over. Examples include "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" & "Alice". "M*A*S*H" & "M*A*S*H". "Logan's Run" & "Logan's Run". "The Waltons Thanksgiving" & "The Waltons". Meanwhile "Matt Helm" & "Planet of the Apes" were being coy or vague about being connected to the movies or not. 🤔 "The Adventures of Superman" starring George Reeves, is the television series that Christopher Reeve's movies aren't a part of. But George's is a continuation of the movie that came out before. But note that they share a multiverse! 🎉

Ladies I thoroughly enjoyed your take on Superman and I hope you'll also watch Superman II together, which delves into several of your observations in depth. Two points of Superman Trivia: Clark Kent's glasses are forged out of the crystal in his spaceship. Like Superman, the crystal is super strong and allows Clark to discretely use his heat vision (without melting his glasses while wearing them) in the event of an emergency. Also, Superman is subconsciously using his powers of super-hypnotism when he wears them in the presence of other people. If he is addressing you in his guise of Clark Kent--while wearing those Kryptonian-crystal glasses--he is subtly hypnotizing you into disassociating him from Superman. That's why no one easily recognizes Clark as Superman wearing a pair of glasses! Also, The reason there's so much Kryptonite on Earth is because his spaceship was equipped with a version of warp drive, propelling him at hyperlight speed to Earth, but also opening a tunnel through the fabric of space-time behind him. That opening served as an unintentional tunnel through space, allowing tons and tons of fragmented Kryptonite to follow Superman in his wake, all the way to Earth and scatter itself across all the continents---a boon to all Superman's future enemies who would stop at nothing to obtain a chunk of Kryptonite to use against him! Superman himself unwittingly brought his greatest and most deadly enemy to Earth with him! Again, thank you for this and please give us your reactions to Superman II ! Peace!

This was not the first Superman movie but this was the first Superman movie to take him seriously. Indeed the effort was made to have all the characters except Superman be serious. All the Lex Luthor stuff had to be toned WAY down because it got too dark. This movie started the superhero blockbuster. You talked a lot about Star Wars and special effects. It's important to note that ILM (Industrial light and Magic, the special effects company started by George Lucas) did the special effects on both movies. The tagline was "You'll believe a man can fly." There was even public discussion about kids hurting themselves trying to fly imitating the movie. I'm glad this movie will last forever. We need you, Superman. In this age of cynicism, now more than ever.

The 'Fortress of Solitude' description of the arctic construct that you recognized was actually kind of adapted (OK, some would say 'ripped off', probably not unfairly) by the 1940s Superman comics from the 1930s pulp-magazine hero, Doc Savage, who had a Fortress of Solitude somewhere in the arctic five years before Superman used the term. In our modern and more sophisticated age, of course, we just call such things 'man caves'.

That mirror dimension is a prison to the phantom zone. We don't actually see what it's like in the phantom zone. Just the outer shell of the mirror representation of it. Faora and the other Kryptonian followers of Zod got sucked into it at the end of Man of Steel. So did the U.S. Army Colonel. We can only imagine what life must be like in there. The 1984 Supergirl movie does give us a bit more insight. It is a dark place with violent storms, and superpowers do not work in there. Maybe you all should give it a watch? I recommend the director's cut, which is hard to come by. -OG

Then there is the Donner cut which Richard Donner came back by Fans demand and finished what he started. Watch The Donner Cut. It is the better movie.

That was a CIA agent who hid a tracking device in his camera 📷. He's not actually a photographer. This was a misdirect. The Daily Planet, however, does employ a Jenny Olsen. A young female reporter. saw this in theaters. The next day I had bedsheets I had underwear all superman had them for many years, the bedsheets, nice and silky..lol I was only five years old when I saw it on release but I absolutely love this version of superman. The first two movies are awesome.... I even have pictures of me sleeping upside down in my underwear and the shirt.. I was a very cute , unfortunately, I don't talk to my sisters anymore. 1 of them has lots of photo albums.. maybe one day I'll catch up get it all scanned ,,,even have a bunch of pictures of me sitting on a 16 ft great white shark on the beach back in the 80s.. we were all close siblings like you are mom was the glue that held everything together when she passed in 2018 everybody. they all got greedy with each other, and I couldn't deal with it anymore. We just split assets and went our separate ways. not a day goes by I don't think about them all. I'm sure they think about me, but there's a lot of pain from dealing with deaths. My one sister reached out to me the other day , in an email, because we haven't seen each other since 2018 or talk to each other so she was just happy to hear I was still alive. You know the pandemic and everything , but I still haven't talk to her on the phone. not sure if I'm absolutely ready to do it seeing you guys together reminds me of family how we used to be, please don't let it happen to you and your siblings.. the bad part I don't get to see my nieces and nephews that I helped raise. this is the way things are no control over that.. I have a little bit of animosity, while my mother was dying, I was taking care of her every day till she took her last breath I was actually in the room with her, the only one.. I even told them all three of my sisters to let them know that she's gonna die tonight you just know it's coming. ..None of them came. it was an honor to take care of her im her only son my duty, but a little part of me is resentful for them not showing up.. just a little bit I don't really hold it. above their head. But yeah, I'm still dealing with the PTSD. of those three months of taking care of her 24 seven, at home.. I've seen things that no one should actually witness especially your own mother.. but yeah, the dying process definitely took a long time. This is a little bit of therapy for me talking about it, letting it out... so yes, please don't get that way with your siblings and family. Try to stay together whatever you can. I'm sure eventually things will work out. It's just seems to be taking a long time. It's already going on seven years.

Honestly, I think Supes would be more pragmatic than what we saw in the climax. The first missile is meant to kill an entire US state (one of the most populous ones) while the second missile is headed for a single city. He knows that it's unlikely that he'll intercept both in time, so shouldn't the missile headed for the California fault line be a priority considering there are more lives at stake?

Loved your reaction to this iconic movie. If you ladies have not seen it I would HIGHLY recommend the TV show "Superman and Lois", it is fairly new and only has 3 seasons at this point. Tyler Hoechlin is second in my eyes as Superman And Clark Kent only to Christopher Reeve.

1. Lois, "Do you like pink?" Answer: What straight guy and some chicks don't? 2. I worked in a movie theater when this came out and it was a great place to bring your girlfriend. (Especially since mine didn't have to pay for it). 3. Loose lips sink ships😠 4. We lost Ottis/Ned Beaty recently.😇 5. I wasn't the only High School boy to have a crush on Valerie Perrine😍😋 6. It might be just me, but Lois seems to be a bit of a bimbo. 7. Robin Williams 😇 was one of Reeves' best friends and was at his bedside until he passed. 8. The next one is even better but the third one that Richard Pryor (who was in it) said in an interview on Johnny Carson, when he was supposed to be promoting, it that it sucked.

Finally you watch a real Superman movie not the Dceu crap. Zack Snyder Superman is not Superman. Henry Cavil is a nice guy but he got screwed by Nolan and Snyder who know nothing about Superman or what he suppose to represent which is optimism and inspiration. Zack Snyder Superman is an abomination. This movie is the first modern superhero movie that started the all superhero genre. You should also see Superman 2 the theatrical version not the Donner Cut which is incomplete and completely ruin the first movie. Christopher Reeve Rip is the gold standard of playing both Superman and Clark Kent no one else ever come close.

No he is not an abomination and only a real superman fan knows that if you only like Christopher Reeve and you're obviously just a superman movie fan. I do agree that Henry is a good superman and that chrisopher Reeve, though, is much better. To call the movie crap is an utter idiocy.

1948 was actually the first Superman movie with Kirk Alyn. He did 2 movies. 1948 Superman, 1950 Atom Man vs. Superman. George Reeves took over in 1951 in Mole Men. 1952 George Reeves started the TV series The Adventures of Superman for 7 seasons.
