Thanks for the review! Just watched it tonight after your recommendation, and wife and I loved it. Such a good homage to 80's animated fantasy films like Heavy Metal and Fire and Ice. Our local Kiwi superstar Lucy Lawless put in another great performance as the Swamp Witch.

Having seen the prior animated shorts produced by Gorgonaut I had high hopes of what these folks could do with a bigger budget. I'm glad my expectations were well met.

Agreed. The anthology format works well for this kind of story covering multiple times and places.

I wish they were honest about it being rotoscope. I saw a DVD of this film with phenomenal cover art that you used in your thumbnail, and decided to wait to purchase until i watched a trailer. I am so glad that i waited. I would have been livid to see this when the cover advertised much different artwork. Great review. Keep it up.

Thanks. I certainly will. Regarding the rotoscoping, the film was always presented as such from the initial announcement. Then again I've seen PLENTY of 80s Sword and Sorcery flicks with VHS covers that had nothing to do with the actual movie so I can't blame you for your caution.

Man, reminds me of some of Bakshi and Tartakovskys' work, particularly the latter's "Korgoth of Barbaria" pilot. That would have been such an amazing show. Thank you for the extensive work you put into this video! I'm planning on subscribing to Shudder just to access this movie!

Though this video is informative, and I like to see a film like this appreciated for its artistic effort, I'm not a fan of rotoscope animations I've seen so far, and The Spine Of Night is no exception. The film has a few beautiful moments, but mostly I found it grotesquely ugly in an uncomfortable way. My husband, however, loved it. The acting talent was spot on, but I think I was expecting something prettier. If you like your fantasy with a heavy dose of gritty violence, you'll love TSON.

It's worth giving it a shot. With VOD and streaming you can give it the equivalent of a rental.

Just seen this movie today. Herd alot of noise on how brutal this movie is (and it is ). However the biggest flaw with this movie is how the action is animated. It is so janky and unpolished that it looked like drawings from a flipbook. I actually found the more gory parts without fighting to be good, but the sword play between people is aweful. It was worth a watch for the story but certainly not for the action.

It's rotoscoped animation, made by filming real life actors and then drawing over the video frames by hand. It's an incredibly painstaking process, and usually animated at 15 frames per second which is why it might look janky. But the movement is so much more natural looking than you see in traditional animation.
