Kylo Ren: "You are not the real Palpatine. Do you want to know how I know that? It is because my grandfather fulfilled his destiny by destroying the sith lord. You might remember him. His name was Darth Vader!"
Be honest When he said “The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some considered to be unnatural” every single one of you said it with him in theatres
I said it. My dad, who watched the original in 1977 at the drive in, just sat there in awe of what we were witnessing. When it showed Palpatine's face and his eyes our jaws dropped. This was a series that had us to the end. We loved all the star wars story.
As much as I like Ian returning and Sidious himself, I think bringing him back ruins the whole point of Anakin's redemption except saving Luke. I think it should have been Plagueis to be the main villain, as he was most well known for doing this death cheating business and was even theorized to have indirectly created Anakin. If that's so then Kylo is also an indirect creation of his
oh it did. it completely ruined the theme george established of anakin being the chosen one who restored balance to the force. but this is disney we're talking about. they never had any plan when they started making the sequel trilogy so when they got to the 3rd film and snoke was already dead, they had no idea who was going to be the new baddy and resurrected ol' sparky. i like ian as palpatine however, when george wrote the return of the jedi, anakin killed him. george said so thus, it is so. i've never seen this movie or anything after rogue one from disney and while it's neat to see him reprise the role once more, it doesn't make sense.
He was brought back in legends as well. Palpatine always had contingencies in the event of his death. The man who fooled the entire Jedi for years and brought them down like a Trojan horse really wouldn’t have a backup plan to cheat death? He wasn’t dumb. He knew he hadn’t fully and completely turned Anakin. Not really. Him being beaten by Rey just shows the same level of arrogance he displayed towards Windu when he shot lightning and barbecued himself. Nothing has changed about his character.
@iamchrispaezjr thing is though, according to George, after vader threw him down the shaft, he was dead, dead, dead. That was how anakin lived up to the title of chosen one who would return balance to the force.
@@generalzod7959 Which he did, but that doesn’t mean that balance and peace lasts forever in an imperfect galaxy. Also, George Lucas doesn’t own Star Wars anymore, and sold it of his own free will. So he no longer has any say in what should or shouldn’t be. I agree with you that the story wasn’t well planned out, but at least J. J. Abrams’ logic made some sense still when explaining it to Ian McDiarmid, which is that Palpatine has already been the main devil throughout this saga, thus it should end that way. And Random Guy, whilst Darth Plagueis was better known for cheating death, not having him in the films at least supports what Palpatine says was ironic about him; “He could save others from death, but not himself.”
And it meant fuck-all since he came back, destroyed the Republic and Jedi AGAIN, corruted another Skywalker into being his lapdog, then killed all the Skywalkers and created Two new Empires.
@@californiacombativesclub202 Did it have to be the same exact threat though? Literally its 30 years after the OT ended, Why are we still stuck on rebels vs the Empire and Palpatine clones, evil Skywalker Vader knock-offs on a redemption arc, and death stars? The plot was just lazy and contrived. Like they retconned Poe being a drug smuggler turned ace rebel pilot just to make it clear he's a Han replacement. And made Rey another desert planet hero who is the secret offspring of a sith lord. Its so lazy its pathetic.
Gosh the atmosphere in this scene is fantastic, especially the sound design, visuals and use of imperial march. Everything other than the writing in TROS was fantastic. It’s a shame the writing was so bad
Basically Luke was a failure. He failed to kill the emperor. He failed to create a new Jedi Order. His entire story & life was a waste I hate what episodes 8/9 did to Luke. And the plot in general
@@electrictroy2010 Luke always failed to kill the emperor, anakin did. Lets just hope tv shows will make this trilogy loveable like what clone wars show did for the prequels
@@maklenard899 Luke did defeat emperor He stood with his iron will against Palpatine's taunting to the dark side and then Anakin killed Vader and killed Sidous
I give props to Kylo for keeping a cool, collected demeanor despite the situation, and immediately aiming his blade the moment he spots Palpatine, knowing better than to underestimate the “weak old man.” For his part, Palpatine just effortlessly exudes the same frightful confidence he possessed in previous films, as if death itself was hardly an obstacle, just something that slowed him down. The Dark Lord of the Sith is reborn.
You make excellent points. I know people pick this movie apart. But as far as this particular scene, I feel the way they each react is a simple touch that adds even more depth to the characters, especially Kylo.
@@gatsbee7 I do like the sequel trilogy, does it make me look stupid tho? Thing is, I like all the sw stuff at this point. I started following the franchise in like 2017, ep 4 was first sw I watched, then 5 and 6, then prequels, and then sequel at last. I usually watched them pirated, and I was too young, I didnt know about disney and shit, I thought its all just sw, I got attached to the whole franchise that I just didnt want it to end in ep 6, especially when I was born too late to enjoy the ot and prequels. I want to listen to myself but I hope it doesnt make me look stupid because sw fans usually bully others for their choices, they say that people who like sequels are emotional and immature, and only care about new vfx and what not.
@@michaeldesanta317 You don’t look stupid at all! If other people say that, ignore them and move on. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and bullying anyone for having a different opinion just shows their ignorance. I’ve been around long enough to have seen all of the SW movies during their initial theater releases. I can’t say there’s any film in the series that I outright “hate.” I may like certain ones more than others, but that doesn’t mean I hate any of them. True SW fans can debate, discuss, and even disagree, but we all realize that at the core we’re all SW fans, so why hate on each other? I enjoy hearing the opinions of others and considering things from a different point of view.
Wouldn’t have been possible. When The Last Jedi was being filmed, Colin Treverrow was still set to direct Episode IX. In his version of the movie (which would’ve been called Duel of The Fates) Palpatine didn’t return. It wasn’t until September 2017, just 3 months before The Last Jedi hit theaters, that they fired him and brought back JJ Abrams
@@samscorch8252 Most people seem to agree on. It's obviously impossible to know that for sure since the movie was never made. But draft of the script seemed way more promising and interesting than the movie we got
James earl Jones only had to say one line as vader in this movie and it still gives me goosebumps "inside your head" in vaders voice. Chills every time.
“The might of the final order will soon be ready...It will be yours if you do as I ask...KILL the girl...end the Jedi and become what your grandfather Vader could not. You will rule ALL the Galaxy...as the new emperor. But beware, she is not who you think she is....”
I hate how he told Ben to kill Rey. If he never wanted her dead just say find the girl, bring her to me. A nice callback to when he told Vader to bring Luke to him
We should have been tricked by the trailers that the laugh and voice comes from Palpatine, but at 1:37 it was revealed it is a deformed and old Jar Jar with evil eyes
Kylo: What could you give me? Palpatine: Everything! A new empire! Kylo: Palpatine: Kylo: What does that mean? Palpatine: I just lifted like a thousand Star Destroyers into the air outside! Kylo: Oh. Well. I can't see that. I'm inside with you! Palpatine: Trust me, they look super cool!
People give Kylo Ren shit, but this dude literally walked up to a Sith planet, inside some sort of temple, to kill one of the most powerful Sith ever. Based af.
Palpatine coming back made total sense given his telling of the Darth Plagueis legend to Anakin & his implying that he, Palpatine, was Plagueis' apprentice.
It's something i've never thought of previously. But Palpatine is Really fkn powerful. He lifted an entire armada of Star Destroyers from under the ground as effortlessly as he would lift a pen. Where other powerful force users like Darth Vader or Starkiller would struggle to even pull down ONE to the ground.
If you look into the whole expanded universe you can argue for Papa Palps being the most powerful character out of thousand of years into galactic history (gods aside)
I don't think it was literally him lifting the ships up. I always thought that was just a visual on him giving the fleet up to Kylo on a silver platter.
“Cut off the head of the Emperor, two more of him takes his place.” The Emperor was created by a dark ghastly invisible sirens called the Onyx. The only way to destroy whom the Onyx creates is by penetration and by confronting the dark enemies themselves: Fear, Anger, and Hate
Imagine if this was a post credits scene after The Last Jedi to find out that Palpatine was still alive then you would have to wait 2 years to find out who Rey really is.
I died inside everytime the Emperor quoted himself. It’s like the writers couldn’t come up with anything, or more likely, they rly didn’t want to risk it
This scene would have made a great final scene for Episode 8. After Kylo fails to destroy the Resistance on Craite he returns to Snoke's ship and a Sith cultist gives Kylo a summons to Exegol. Kylo goes not knowing what he will find there or who has summoned him. This scene places out and when Palpatine is smiling it cuts to credits.
This may sound weird but I actually like how the Star Destroyers break through the ground, it’s like the Empire crawling out of its grave. If they had some structures similar to Tipoca City they might have explained the logistical nightmare behind the setup.
Ian rocked this role once again. It wasn't necessary to bring Palpatine back, but he gave it his all and was terrifying. He was the best part of the entire movie, probably why Disney did that Lol
Thank you! I've been saying for the last couple years, as controversial as the choice to bring Palpatine back was, at least we got another fantastic performance by Ian McDiarmid.
based on the content that was done after return of the jedie for decades: a lot of people wanted palps back in the franhise. they made even an entire prequel trigolgy for his rise to absolute power

@@michealrosen I honestly think that wasn't the plan... I think Snoke was supposed to be the big baddie then damn Ryan Johnson decided to kill off not only Snoke but Luke Skywalker in Ep. 8 so when J.J came back he was probably like "wtf is this" and had to rush to put together a totally different movie.
Only thing I disliked was the music that played midway when we saw the Snokes. It interrupts the evil tone with some generic sciencey wonder. It could have been a scene with Poe looking at pod racers and it would have fit in better.
This would have been a phenomenal final scene for The Last Jedi. Just imagine it. The Resistance is destroyed, no one came to help Leia, but Leia tells Rey they still have hope. They hug. Then this scene plays and Palpatine's smiling undead face is the last shot in the film.

The Darth Plagueis novel explains why Palpatine was able to revive himself, before he killed Plagueis in 32 BBY. During the phantom menace Sidious learned to influence the midi chlorians to keep himself from dying.
While I’m personally not fully sure bringing back Palpatine was the best decision, I can’t deny that Ian McDiarmid killed it in this movie. And I love how he was essentially a lich straight out of Lovecraft.
