Once the weather cools down in my zone, I like to move and divide perennials. Moving and dividind perennials is not as intimidating as it may seem ... it's actually pretty easy. Come along as I do some perennial gardening focusing on perennial flowers.

I love moving plants and rearranging my garden beds. Keeps us creating new spaces in our garden. I think the daisy are going to look beautiful in the new space. You have to do what you think is best for your space. I divide everything.

We enjoy yard work like clearing but we sure wish we had a pick up fairy to clean it all up for us. We just want to keep cutting and pulling things out lol.

I’m moving several perennial plants as well, hoping they’ll do better next year! My hubby just doesn’t get it. He’s into “low maintenance” yard work! 😂 Love your beautiful butterfly moment & thanks for sharing all your gardening knowledge with us! I learn so much.

Moving things we've put in the wrong place is great because it's free! Keeps us in the garden without spending money. I have a whole list of things that need to be moved once we get some rain.

Really enjoy your videos. You are so real and down to earth with your thoughts. I’m learning as I go so not sure I have a lot to share. I have a Cala Lilly I need to move. Not sure where to move it. I only got one bloom this time. The hot summer did a number on it. Thank you for sharing all your information.

I love/hate Agapanthus! It grows great for me here in middle Georgia,8B. It just never blooms. I need to try the pot in the ground method. I did not know that they like to be root bound!

I bought an agapanthus from Home Depot this spring. I repotted it to a bigger pot after coming home. It re-bloomed twice until mid Aug. Right now it has one last flower with short stem; 1/4 of the leaves turning yellow. I am planning to move it to a raised bed in about a month. Home Depot people told me to divid it, but I will wait a year or two to do so when it grows bigger. I probably can share whether it will bloom or not without container next year😊

My favorite plant to divide is hosta’s in the spring. I put them in pots to enjoy thru the season and then this time of year I transplant them back out into the garden.

I too am new to gardening in the DFW area. I’m use to throwing plants on the ground and reaping the rewards a few weeks later. So not the case here in 8A clay territory. There is definitely a learning curve. I have started to succumb to the “ugly” plants that actually do well here. They are just so bland. Sorry about the rant. I hope you find it to be more enjoyable than I.

I need to divide my lambs ear! About to plant some ‘DNR rack’ from Lowe’s purchases. 2 trio salvias, 2 Texas firebush, and an echibeckia. I need to divide my long languishing iris, they’re too crowded. I have some cannas that I got for free about 6 years ago…got distracted, forgot about them…they rooted themselves, and have come through the broiling summers & icy winters we’ve had! And have multiplied! But they’re not where I want them now… With the cooler (cooler than 100s!) weather we’re having, I have my work cut out. Thanks for your encouragement and guidance!

I agree if you don't like it get rid of it. I didn't know that agapanthus like to be root bound. I planted 3 in a large container, last spring, and they've done beautifully. I'm not sure what to do with them over the winter. Sometimes they overwinter in my 7a garden but it is iffy.

I grew agapanthus last year in the ground, and there it stayed. It didn't come back at all, Maryland, zone 7. Favorite plant to divide, hmm; in the past daylilies but recently I'm shrinking my stock in favor of other plant varieties. So, then maybe, liriope would be next. At this point, I have so much it borders lots of my gardens. I'm really only in year 3 of my post-work gardens (I've made a ton of changes in those 3 years), but I'm very anxious to divide some of my specialty colored coneflowers to increase my plants. I have one Heuchera I'm going to try and divide, and like you, I need to divide some daisies. Oh, and lastly, my astrantia did so good this year. I hope to divide them. As I sit here on my porch and look out at some of my gardens, my list keeps growing. I guess that was more of a loaded question than I originally thought.😊

@shesamadgardener well...the first location I had it when it was brand new (I believe from Bluestone Perennials), it probably got the most sun I get in my yard, about 5-5 1/2 hours (9am - 2-3 pm) and drip irrigation. It grew ok that year. Then I moved it to about 4 hours of sun (12 pm - 4 pm) and water from the lawn sprinklers. I'm zone 7, so my sun is obviously different. But I had 3 plants that absolutely leaped this year. The flowers lasted forever, (beginning of May to middle of June), and I've heard the can rebloom but for the blue fortune agastache that got 4'x4' and crowded it out. I'm not sure which I'm going to move but I'm leaning toward the agastache. One-time fertilized, plant tone in spring. I hope to divide it maybe this spring. The variety is Roma. It's really a soft rose/pink color. Not sure if this helps but as usual, it takes me a lot of words to not say much.😂

Gardening is a trial and error process. I have to admit that I don't divide until I really have to. I wish I could grow agapanthus but it's not possible in my zone 5b. Bonny

I spend way too much of my gardening time moving things that I planted in the wrong place! 🤣 I could accomplish so much more. Just bought an agapanthus this spring from H‑E‑B and it was so root bound. I repotted it but it did keep blooming until it got so hot. I might have to move it back to a smaller pot now. Do they do well in the ground, just planted? Such gorgeous plants! I love diving anything because that’s like free plants or for trading! Interested in your aster. I though all of mine died during the winter but they did come back but look scraggly. They need pruning badly but not sure how to do that. I don’t like cleaning up my messes either but I try to so it doesn’t hinder my yard guy. 😁 Good video!

I’ve only planted agapanthus at one other house and it took a couple of years for it to blooms again after I planted it in the ground.

That's interesting about the agapanthus liking to be root bound. I have some that have been in the ground for over 20 years. I divided a large clump of them last fall and they have done ok. Lost a couple of them to the "pizza oven" hot temperatures this summer, but actually got blooms from them before they sizzled. Hopefully the rest of them will survive and give me more blooms next year. My favorite perennials to divide are my bearded irises and my amaryllis. We're still desperate for rain here in Cypress, TX so I'm not doing a whole lot of anything in my gardens except damage control.

Agapanthus are very expensive here. To get them on clearance would be a great idea except I don't think they are hardy enough for my Zone 6b.

Having largely clay soils means your plants are mostly root bound anyway, unless you have amended. Agapanthus are very popular in the South, probably due to our soil. IMHO, burying plastic in your soil negates all of your organic methods.
