One of the first questions you should ask any mover is: “Are you insured?” Many of today’s moving companies still operate without the proper coverage to protect you and your goods during the move. Accidents can happen… no matter how careful the mover is. That’s why it’s an “accident”. So here are 3 moving insurance options to help make your next move stress-free.
OPTION 1: STANDARD VALUATION
All moves are automatically covered by the standard liability (valuation) for the industry, which is $0.60 per pound per article. This amount will typically cover the costs required to repair damaged items, but not replace them. Consider standard valuation like "liability" and car insurance. It's low cost (actually free) and low coverage. Whereas full coverage gives you the most amount of protection.
OPTION 2: FULL COVERAGE
With full coverage moving insurance you can either insure 1 item or your entire household. You simply specify a value, choose your deductible and based on those factors, your premium is determined. Some moving companies choose to directly sell moving insurance, while others use a third party company. We like the following companies:
Bakers International
Toll Free - (800) 356-0093
www.bakerintl.com
OR
Moving Insurance
www.movinginsurance.com
Both insurance companies will offer you a quote for 100% replacement cost coverage. Please contact either company directly for additional information or to get a quote. These are independent agencies not associated with Ameritex Movers, Inc. You’ll need to remember to call them at least 48 hours before your move date to obtain and bind coverage.
OPTION 3: CHECK WITH YOUR HOME OWNER’S INSURANCE
My "Thrifty Tip" =) Your current home owners insurance may already provide coverage for your move and your furniture. It never hurts to check with your policy to see if this coverage is provided to you. It is a great way to reduce an added expense that you’ve paid for through your premiums.
Finally... here is a quick link to the TXDMV.gov site I was telling you about. If you want a copy of Your Rights & Responsibilities When You Move in Texas brochure, please check out our site:
