Moving large rocks by hand (using modified hoist) 

Just got done moving a bunch of big boulders at home myself, and while I rented a telehandler I watched a bunch of videos to see how others were moving rocks just out of curiosity. This has to be, by far, the best and most ingenious idea I have seen yet if you don’t have large equipment or want to move across an area without the damage heavy machinery can cause. Bravo sir!

This a good Idea, you know what you're missing is a litle hitch or coupler so you can pull it with your truck or tractor.

Wow... I love boulders and I need that crane! I only have ten 2’ granite boulders around the garden (I placed myself). Wish I had 3-4’ers though!

Thanks for this interesting, and helpful demo!!! I've been thinking about how to move large boulders, with the least amount of equipment, (and risk). Perhaps there's a way to set up a "jib crane", using a length of rigid pipe, (for a mast, and some sort of come-along/boat winch, and, some "earth anchors", and steel chain/cables.

Yeah I have some granite boulders that are closer to 4x4x4' I am wondering about moving them by hand. I think that I better call in some heavy machinery though. I can't imagine how I could get them up out of the ground and then move them. Your setup would be fantastic for most of the rocks I need to move here though! Can you make a video about putting the wheels on that engine hoist. I have a nearly new hoist and need to make a sandstone fire pit floor, a wall to reinforce a riprap ditch, and some other landscaping work. I got a deal on the hoist, but had yet to figure out working around the little steel wheels.q

About 2500 lbs for the large one, good estimate. Based on 16 cu ft and density of 2.5.

interested in this mod engine crane / hoist. did you get square tubes and mounted those tires on it and inserted it to the 1" square tube on the actual crane itself?

Shortening the jib moved the rock (and hence the centre of mass) rearwards. When it was sitting on the frame, taking part of the load on the jib did not move the rock, nor the centre of mass. The load is still where the rock is. There's many ways to prove this but perhaps the simplest to explain is to consider the situation where the rock is hanging entirely on the jib...if this moved the load back to the jib base, then you would not need the front tyres out past the rock. Instead you could retract them back to just past the jib. Clearly this is nonsense, as it would just tip forwards. Why? Because the centre of mass of the rock is not moved just because you lift it two different ways.

Two loads wouldm have been better. Maybe three.
