I rolled out of North Jersey 25 years ago. Best thing I have ever done. I split and relocated to Southside Virginia. Less expensive, better weather and a whole different way of living. You can greet a stranger and they don't look at you like you have 2 heads.

Its fun up here, but its just too expensive in the tri-state. Working hard just to give it back in taxes and high cost of living. It’s getting harder for young people to buy a home and start a family. Also a lot of people in my age group (30s) are sick of the politics here, things have gotten too weird. I don’t blame people for leaving.
@JackieBaker

That's unfortunate. A lot of college age and young adults are fleeing the state too. It's sad honestly.

Yes! You're absolutely correct! And same here, I'm 31 and will be leaving New Jersey by May of 2022 to Greensboro, North Carolina. I'm tired of the increase of taxes while North Carolinas corporate taxes are significantly decreasing, New Jersey is increasing. Same for income taxes and property taxes as well. Everything is just way too high! I can't wait to leave and to leave for good! New Jersey has been my home for the past 31 years but all good things must come to an end!

I moved out of NJ in the late 90’s and have lived in NC for the last 25 years. Low income taxes, low property tax and better weather. I pay $1800 a year property taxes on a 1800 square foot house. Please don’t move here and vote the same way you did in NJ and turn this state into the same kind of mess.
@MattMatt77
@MattMatt77 Год назад
I'm just speaking the truth with the property taxes in the only problem. But when you pay sky-high property tax and the money doesn't go to your community. But paying for state or government workers 2 to 3 pensions. That's a problem. I also moved out of New Jersey. Other reasons and problems I had with the state I don't have in the state I live in now.
@danwilliams4096
@danwilliams4096 Год назад
NJ used to be like that until the 70s. No income tax until 1976 and no sales tax until 1966 Even then you were paying 3%/$60 tax on a new $2,000 car, property taxes about $1,000 were common outside biggest cities Crime manageable, safe to walk even cities like Newark and Trenton in daylight and early evenings. Many moved from the cities, especially NYC at that time. Many were decent hard working and blended well. Others brought the problems they were running away from Your biggest worries are the high paid government jobs where the retirees don't want to personally pay taxes to fund their pensions. They go down to places like NC demand services that you don't need or want and raise everyone's taxes by $10K or more because they are still saving $30K over NJ in terms of income and property taxes and winter heating

@@turdferguson1603 The problem is I live in a "conservative" part of a liberal state. It doesn't matter who I vote for since the suburbs near NYC have the numbers while I live in the middle of the Pine Barrens. Being that I'm far from a conservative and even further from what's considered liberal these days. Now I'm just looking for a place to go to once I retire where the government, and everyone else just leaves me alone. Maybe one of those retired missile silos out in the middle of nowhere. Then I live my dream of being that crazy old guy, running around my property with a shotguns screaming "get off my land!" at any car that happens to drive by. 😅 Don't get me wrong, I love people. I just hate the idea of complete strangers being able to effectively control every aspect of my life. It's like, as long as I'm not hurting anyone, don't tell me what to do.

I moved from NJ to texas for 5 years and i have several opinions about this… 1. People in NJ tend to have a very “grass is greener on the other side” mentality- i think being so close in proximity to big cities, beautiful landscape and nice beaches but not exactly “in it” makes people think everywhere in the country must be better. I for one took for granted the proximity of things in NJ and thr diversity. In Texas, if you want to go visit another major city it’s 3-4 hours away, by then you could be in boston. The south has some nice parts to it but most of it is so spread out nothing is a day trip. Everything is also so commercialized in Houston and Dallas, everything is a chain and nothing is walkable. 2. Weather- people don’t like how cold it gets but every state has some form of bad weather, here in texas it gets to 115 in the summer and will stay at 105-110 all of june-august. Last weekend, midway through October it was 95 which is miserable when you just want to enjoy fall weather. I would take our cold over this blistering heat for months on end any day. 3. Culture- new jerseyians are around so many different cultures that they too want to experience something different as well. I have very strongly noticed a lot of people from the north will come to texas but not a lot of texans will leave. Why? it is not in culture, look at the way they feel about family, hometown pride, state pride. I mean almost every country song is about coming back to hometowns, loving the south, highschool reunions you get my point. So many native texans feel as if they have no reason to leave, no it because their state is better, but it’s not culturally as common. Again these are my personal opinions, i have lived in Houston for 5 years, lived in almost every neck of it too and this theme has been pretty prevelant. I am very excited to say i am moving BACK to NJ and will never leave our crowded, pizza loving state again.

For the people who are moving from NJ to CA, I hope you have your acting job and not just trying to live the dream. For people in the tech industry, making a six-figure salary in NYC is better than making it in SF. Quick comparison. Homes in Compton (yes, that Compton) are going for $500K. And I’m sure they’re not going to send their kids to public schools there. $500K gets you a decent home and a decent public school system in Jersey. If you think gas prices are high in Jersey, imagine paying $5 a gallon. And there’s no alternatives for commuting. At least if you work in NYC, you can take the train in. In CA, you’ll be spending an hour and a half to travel 10 miles. Grew up in Jersey. Went to school and worked in Florida for 7 years. Lived in NYC for a good 8 years. Lived in CA for 9 years. Finally moved back to Jersey and it’s surprisingly not bad. To me it’s way cheaper than CA and more bang for your tax dollars.

Great video!!! We actually moved out of Woodbridge, NJ in mid 2019 and went to Florida. We have been vacationing via cruises from Florida to the Bahamas for awhile. We love the year round beaches and just love the weather. What we did sacrifice was the wages.....literally 50% lower. But we had a good amount of equity in our NJ home to pay off our debt and down payment for our FL home. No regrets, especially going outside in Jan/Feb and just smelling the warm ocean air here on the Treasure Coast part of FL. So this was more weather and environment reasons to move here then anything else, and it was not a GET OUT of NJ and go anywhere else. All in all we hate the snow and love the tropics.

It goes MUCH further in the Carolinas (I've property in both) and about half is discretionary. The Carolinas and Georgia are rightly popular. Move inland and away from major cities and you can live very well with few hassles. I haven't locked my back door in thirty years.

If I was rich and could afford to maybe make a mistake I might move back to Princeton. But as I am it is not going to happen. If you are young and love the land where you live, think about it before you leave and start a life somewhere else. There may not be any going back.

You wouldn't want to come back to Princeton. Princeton has become unaffordable. It's for the elitists. They destroyed all the land and woods here and it's nothing but houses, apartment complexes and insanely priced townhomes. The average property tax in the Princeton area is ranging from $15k-$30k, some even higher than that. Most of the townhomes are starting around $1million.

Grew up in NJ in 50's and 60's. Left to go to college in midwest. Then Army. Then grad school (also in midwest). Kept my legal residence at my parents' home all those years. I could license my car for $10/year and no state income tax in NJ back then. Married a gal from the midwest and we lived in IL then MN before moving to AZ 22 years ago for retirement. Many high school friends, both those who stayed and those who didn't, are moving to low tax, low COL, better weather states like FL, Ark, TX, AZ, and NV. NJ taxes are some of the worst and politics are crazy. Homes are so very expensive. None of us would ever go back.

I own in NJ and California San Diego to be exact The cost of living is approximately 50% lower than Jersey . Homeowner insurance for the same coverage that I have in NJ is 50% lower . Electrician Plumbers over 80% lower . Food restaurant tabs around 30% lower. The cost of homes are about 50% higher than in NJ but property taxes are 1/3 lower. Beaches are free and the weather is so consistently mild that your AC and heating bill are almost non existent. There is a law in California you can exercise this once if you are 65 or older and you decide to move from a very low income area from a small home with very low property taxes to a very high income area and purchase a mega mansion, you can take the low property taxes with you to the new location. Property taxes are frozen at the time of purchase and only go up according to inflation and go down during recession. The property taxes remain frozen until you sell the property but if you sell to a family member they remain frozen at the original rate. Lawyers are not used when purchasing a house all is done at closing by the realtor and the bank another savings. Finally the weather is the best most consistent in the world the roads are pristine and are constantly maintained and in San Diego we have no fault line . Since 2007 when I built my home in Carlsbad, I’ve experienced three earthquakes all in NJ. I only keep my home in Jersey because selling it I will loose too much money and family resides here. My wife and I go back every 10 weeks averaging 6 months in Jersey and 6 in Southern California

Hi Jackie! I think the younger people ages 25 to 35 are the highest group wanting to leave Jersey. It must be tough in your line of work, real estate, if people can’t afford to buy a home up there, especially younger first time buyers. Even if your making a decent salary, say $65k yearly, a lot of your hard earn money is going to taxes and insurance. Jersey also has a lot of people moving out to retire in Florida or North Carolina. It’s basically affordability. You know New Jersey is an expensive state if you decide to take it on the giddy-up Jackie, right? LoL!

I have done some research but I still haven’t fully decided yet, but so far, I’m leaning towards Columbus, Ohio; Raleigh, NC; or Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.. These are 3 buzzling cities that have costs of living almost 1/3 less compared to NJ. Statistically, these 3 states are also equal to one another in terms of everything - from housing, to healthcare, to education, crime rate, etc.. North Carolina though has an advantage in terms of the weather.. and has a more diverse landscape/scnery compared to the other 2 states.

I'm on the outskirts of Elizabeth. I'd like to move somewhere else that's warmer and nicer. You asked about California and wondered why people would consider it (coming from NJ). I've thought about it-- though it'll never happen because my wife won't want to leave NJ-- but I would do it because 1) the weather 2) scenic beauty and 3) I'm becoming an RN in December and RNs in California make a LOT of money, which would more than offset any increased cost of living. I've also wanted to move south, but the lower wages sucks. Though we would technically probably be fine, especially with the equity from our house... We'd probably make at least a good 200-250k profit if we sold it now. But again, none of this is going to happen anyways. I'll just have to put up with some stuff I don't like and appreciate the good things about NJ.

@@Nonybusinessxxxxxx yeah, I wrote that before they passed the whole electric car requirement crap. That whole idea is insane. And I agree that the state is crazy and communist. I would only consider moving there because I'm a nurse and nurses in California make tons of money. So for an extra $100,000 a year I could put up with communists around me, especially since I'm already in New Jersey and surrounded by pretty leftist people anyways. I’ve recently retired and lived in Jersey City my whole life. I just got a $4000 a year tax increase in my property taxes. That money can’t be used for traveling but has to go to the bureaucrats instead. I’d like to run away quickly but I’m not irresponsible. Of course selling my house is an option which will be necessary to buy a new home somewhere out west like Las Vegas. No income tax weather is better than Florida due to the dryness. I’ve just had it and I’m disgusted with nonsense on a daily basis. Because of the sharp tax inc, I really don’t see much positivity for the future. I guess I’m just getting old and cranky.

People are leaving NJ to these weird obscure places for the natural beauty. NJ is an industrial wasteland with power lines and strip malls all over the place. Another thing is the racism. Young Italian men are violent and scary, young black men are violent and scarier. There's also the rampant drug problem !! Living in NJ means spending a majority of your life inside a house, that gets depressing, if you're not stuck indoors all day a person wastes hours of their life driving around inside a car. Speaking of driving, NJ has the WORST roads that are confusing and make no sense !! It's impossible to get around without a GPS and the roads are designed so poorly one can easily miss a turn or an exit. Let's not forget the WORST traffic on the planet. Healthcare SUX so bad in NJ !! don't ever get sick or have an acute problem !! wait times are horrendous. Doctors are over worked and NOT pleasant to deal with.

After Covid and Democrat politicians screwing their states, CA, NY, et al, Florida's prices have increased to a point that housing is not affordable to the locals, the average Joe. They have to rent a room in their rentals to afford the place and forget about buying a house. A 2/1 single family house is rented for $3,000 and there aren't many for rent. There is more demand than supply for rentals. The cities are becoming more crowded by the day. People, please stop voting Democrat and stay in your states. The jobs - plenty of jobs now especially in education, nursing, IT and construction/home improvement. Commute - I first lived in Jersey city and commuted to NYC for my job. I then saved money and moved to Woodbridge and took a train to NYC. We lived within a 5-10 drive to a train station, the Turnpike, NJ Parkway, 1 and 9 and 287. If your thinking of moving to NJ,. always check what local major roads are available. Taxes - We if you work in NY and live in NJ, you will have to pay a NY commuter tax. With taxes my old calculations was 70% take home pay if you live in NJ and commute to NY. Then if you live and work in NJ, it was 80% take home pay. Safety? - it all depends where you move to, I think after exit 11 on the Turnpike and after 127 NJ Parkway (Over the Raritan river, I always felt a little safer. But it all boils down to how long you want to drive/commute to and from work.

@@claudioinostroza2286 awesome 👍 I agree, for younger people just trying to get to a level of financial freedom faster, perhaps the higher crime is worth putting up with for access to the NYC jobs?? My research shows, that alone explains the Exodus out of NJ. Even the taxes are worthwhile if you are building wealth fast and faster than other places. Can always move elsewhere later, after reaching financial freedom. Apparently even California isn't off the table. I think realtors need to double down on this. Position yourself to attract people who are in the working class phase of life and want to use the NJ housing to access the unlimited economic opportunities in NYC. NYC is scary for people not raised in the area. Perhaps, illustrating the economic opportunity relative to other places makes it less scary??? Seems like there's just incredible value. Like, seeing aggregate crime stats even, DC is worse. I see tons of value in NJ....

I escaped in 1981 and had a blast seeing more of the rest of the US and world thanks to the Air Force. You have to be a millionaire in net worth to live decently in Jersey in 2023. OTOH I retired at 47 on six acres in South Carolina (same terrain as central Jersey in the Low Country) on a very low income of about $60K (due to back damage I can't work) yet half my income is still discretionary. $60K wouldn't buy gutter space in Bergen County. I went back last year to visit and everything is even more expensive, crowded and hectic than before. Do your research, take vacations where you consider moving, and if you plan right when you cash out your old home you can live very well elsewhere. My parents cashed out in the 1990s retiring in Michigan and Virginia. The traditional point of living in NJ after WWII was to make money in your choice of city then sell out and retire somewhere affordable and that works a treat. If you want to own land (not just a house) and have a lot more personal space it's no contest. If you want a major income boost in retirement escaping NJ overhead is unbeatable. My property taxes on two houses (plus garage and large workshop) on six acres are a little over 800 bucks a year. Low overhead means I can travel and afford to be quite comfortable on a very low income so I'm basically recession-proof. Come on down to the Carolinas and Georgia! There's plenty of room in areas that look like semi-rural Jersey did in the 1960s.

From what I experience from living in NJ and knowing people that left and seniors that stayed, most people I see left because of retirement. I live in a town with many older demographics and most that have stayed were because they had excellent pensions from working in public sector jobs or very good unions so they had no need to leave (such as retirement savings being drained by high taxes). But I can definitely see retirement being a huge reason. At 40, I can't even see myself being able to afford NJ by the time I retire let alone the rest of the USA. And yes. I notice a huge increase in foreign demographics. My wife is Indian and a large number of Indians along with Asians such as Chinese, Koreans, and Filipinos have become part of the NJ population.

Hi California here. NJ is moving to CA for high paying jobs in tech field and weather. I think our taxes are the same you have to pay federal and state, sales tax is over 9%. Housing costs in the Bay Area are higher than Jersey. Groceries, eating out etc., is the same. Main difference is housing costs are higher. Wages might be higher too, but it doesn't matter because you will use it to pay for housing., either apartment or house will run you more. I have done lots of traveling within the US, and anyplace there is a good job market with good paying jobs and you would actually like to live there, the housing costs are going to be high, because the demand is there. I personally am surprised at what's happening in Maine, one of my favorite places to visit. Housing has gone up so much in Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Kennebunkport, York etc, yet they don't have the job market of NY or CA. Would love it if you could explain that anomaly.
