In preparation for our new Nakamura lathe coming tomorrow, we have to clear some space! Here's how we used a pallet jack to scoot the Tormach PCNC1100 CNC milling machine and Tormach Slant Pro CNC lathe around our shop to make some room.

Even though you use your tormach mill I bet you will probably just get rid of the lathe after you get your new one up and running just because there is so much difference in the 2. Very exciting getting new equipment in.

Too late now but I think you would have been much better off to leave the Tormachs under the porch then turn the Mori 90deg and face the doors of the new lathe and Mori towards each other and have them in the center of the room. doing it that way a single operator can easily supervise and operate both machines with minimal wasted movement. Also I imagine that new lathe will make some heat in operation and it is going to be trapped back in that hole. If you want ultra precision tolerances the climate is something you HAVE to consider.

I think it might even be closer to 15000

***** A loaded semi is 80,000lb. I wouldn't worry about moving a 15000lb machine as that is what my mill weighs and I moved it. My VMC weighs 26000lb and I moved it too, Do it once and do it right and life will be better in the future. The investment has been made might as well maximize it. :-)

So I guess it will be a long night for you (I would not be able to sleep when such an awesome machine is on its way to your shop)

Perhaps a stupid question but why not put the new lathe and the big one in the centre of the room back to back? That way they can share those 3feet behind the machine that you spoke of :)

You should stream the new lathe arriving on youtube :D

Hmm, either you're going to have to get the Mori re-leveled, or you may be re-applying epoxy to the floor. The only way I see that Nakamura fitting is to move the mill or "skateboard" the lathe in. Make sure you have enough clearance from the wall on the main spindle side to change spindle liners and insert new bar stock. I would strongly consider getting rid of the Tormach lathe entirely and, at the least, swapping out the 1100 for a 440 just purely for space reasons. The safety factor alone is enough reason not to have a cramped up shop, but it also adds unnecessary stress to your work. Congratulations :)

hey John I was watching one of your videos earlier and you were talking about threading on a tormach mill (a small titanium bolt) and I was wondering how you got that to work like how you sync the spindle, the g code ect. if you have any advice. any will be appreciated thanks!

Pity the shop ain't just a littttle deeper, because then, with a passage for repairs and maintenance (and electrical interference) you could've put the new machine back to back with the Mori.

Wow. You're already out of space in your new place. Time for a bigger place again....

Could you put the tormach lathe in that corner
@zachstone1939

why arent you selling the tormach mill and lathe to pay toward the new mill or lathe? just curious the reasoning
@TheSad25pl
@TheSad25pl 8 лет назад
Yep, I also would consider seling old stuff to make place for new toys. And I would also consider taking new surface grinder. (Tormach stuff is a crap...)
@Aaron16

I can understand keeping the mill, I would, but the lathe I don't see a reason to keep it anymore. But maybe John has a reason.

When you start your main workers, later become your mini workers. In this case, it's the Tormach. As for it being crap, the guy made them work, with his work, so for him those aren't "crap". They are good machines. This whole elitism is what keeps people grounded, the mentality that if something is made in a certain place it won't work. Sure, it's nowhere near as close to a high end machine, but it will run, it will turn, and cut. And that's what matters. As for logic, you'll always need a side machine in the shop to do something when the main churner is stacked with work. It's simple like that.

King James Bible Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Isaiah 55:6-7 6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

***** I've watched these video's about knife making along with many others as yourself and have enjoyed them but ultimately there is a point where your nine to five or what ever you do can become your god (little g). A friend is someone who tells you the truth and I appreciate the video's don't get me wrong but I care about his eternal soul and your eternal soul more. The time is getting short and many things are serving as a distraction. Yes, we have to earn a living but that is different from worshipping the prowess of your abilities and giving glory to yourself instead of the God of Heaven which is the giver of all things. That is what this channel has become a religion of how you can be as good as me because look what wonderful machinery I am getting. That is religion and it's what I'm understanding when hearing the words spoken in these videos, they have become from how to do something to look how wonderful all this is and successful you can be too. God is not impressed but he judges the heart of man. The fear of the Lord is the begginning of wisdom, please don't wait too late before you seek the Lord who gave His life so that you may live. Today is the day of salvation.
