Also.... always pack an overnight bag.....just for the first few days....you know, clean undies, t.p. and any necessary meds for a couple of days.....nail clippers, scissors...ect....😊❤
Make sure you pack *separately your cords for tv’s, 📱, fax machine 📠 , and medical electronics, etc. PLEASE don’t forget those cords with the matching cables and remote’s* ~ also jewelry. Place in your car 🚘 it took me forever to find the printer cord 😢. I suggest to create a list for each room and make sure that you bring only the bare essentials that you’ll need for the next two days. Invest in a large black marker the super duty big ones to mark your boxes on each side top and bottom ie kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, office, etc.
Also a cleaning box/bag. The first thing I do is clean the bathroom so I can use it without issue and the fridge so all the food is safe to use, then set up the bed to rest from all the moving. 😅
I’m so glad you mentioned this! I feel like every time I’ve moved (and ive moved a considerable amount of times inside and outside of a couple states) I’ve been in the headspace of constantly thinking about everything else and not remembering to pack myself an overnight bag!
Get several rolls of colored tape. Assign one color to each room. Wrap tape around a corner, so you can see it when stacked. Map of new place w colors so helpers can deliver boxes to the right rooms. (Moved 16 times since age 12)
I did this too! I bought colored stickers with room names already on them so it was easy for movers to know where to put the boxes. It helped tremendously!
I did a similar thing when I move, renting the crates. The biggest benefit (for me at least) was being forced to unpack them before as I had a deadline to return them.
This makes so much sense because after 5 years I still have things in storage 😰 and my lazy ass just bought new ones. Being forced to unpacked is genius 🙈
That mattress bag would be helpful with allllll the bedding. Lay all your sheets flat on the bed they fit. Then make the bed with a set of sheets. Lay the covers flat on top. And zip everything inside the bag.
I used those huge IKEA blue bags. The handles are awesome especially carrying the bags upstairs. And they are reusable. I still use them to carry multiple bags of groceries.
That helps in a lot of different situations such as in your closet as dust protectors, traveling in the car when you don't have enough garment bags, transporting clothes anywhere to keep them clean, organization of outfits etc. I use 2 bags for longer garments. Place one over the hanger then bring another one up from the bottom to overlap the top one along the bottom edge and secure with a few pieces of tape.
We were renting a house for a while and when we finally decided to purchase a couple years ago, I wanted to look around and consider our options. Hubs was dead set on buying the house we were renting. I was extremely heartbroken and felt robbed because I was honestly looking forward to moving out!!! May you experience the joy of moving out of where you are and into where you desire to be. 😊😊
Pro Tip: If you pack your dishes in with your towels, they're protected and clean. That way You don't have to rewash newsprint off of them. Plus, the extra bubble wrap cost is eliminated with this method.
I have collected bubble wrap over the years from packages I received. Also saved up some amazon packages. When it was time to move out, they all came to use 😊
If you have a tight budget, you can get free boxes from almost any grocery store or business. They usually break down the boxes and throw them in the recycling but you can call and ask them save some for you
Nope, Walmart sends their Walmart boxes back to Corp for reuse. Or they are flattened and bailed asap. TV's come individually in their own box and it is sold with the TV. Pallets of TVs come clingwrapped together not boxed together. No worker in Walmart has or is going to take time to go look for any random free boxes for you. Walmart Sells moving boxes, why would they give you something for free?
@@tabytastickI've personally have picked up boxes from Walmart and had the manager call me to pick up boxes. Not sure about your experience, but they have to pay to dispose of boxes.
@@tabytastickas a walmart associate myself I agree with every thing you are saying. At my store the major bulk for the boxes comes for the overnight restock crew. We even have to use the bigger boxes that we empty out like from pillows and plastic totes to hold other broken down boxes as we work through the freight. Makes taking cardboard to the backroom much easier. Even the associates try getting some of the boxes that we empty for moving (but they have to tell us at the beginning of the shift otherwise it is not happening).
All the many times I've moved in my lifetime, I'm 68 years old, I could have used these great ideas 💡. Hahaha I'm always a day late and a dollar short 😊. Thank you for sharing your video. Stay Blessed, Safe and Healthy From Florida 🇺🇸
GREAT TIP! We failed to do that because we procrastinated and ended up putting everything in random boxes. Unpacking was a nightmare and, in our haste, we brought so many unused things too. Five years later, I'm still finding stuff from the old house that needs to be donated.
Yup, I always had a donation box sitting nearby when I had to move. Also, don't pack all your books in 1 box, it gets heavy. Instead, line your boxes with a few books on the sides to help create sturdiness.
If you have a foam mattress they make vacuum sealed mattress bags so you can flatten the mattress and roll it up. Best moving decision ever. Saved a ton of space and was a lot easier to maneuver. It’s easiest if you roll it up and use the straps to keep it rolled. Tape could also help i suppose. You need a decent vac though. A cordless stick vacuum won’t cut it, even if it’s a good one. You’d need either a standard vac or shop vac. Also since you’re moving and you might set up an air bed.. a vacuum is a great way to fully deflate an air bed when you’re done with it so it actually fits back into the bag.
@@Spartan1912tam that could depend but I’ve done it with 5 different mattresses now. 1 twin, 2 queen, and 2 king, and haven’t had any problems at all. Especially that it’s only been for a day or two when moving. The mattresses come deflated so I don’t really see why it would be a problem to deflate them again. Of course someone could have a different experience, that’s just mine.
I too pull bags right over hangers ..yes puts a hole in bags...but just save the bags for paint/craft projects later. Another one is to ..leave clothes on hangers..line your car trunk with a blanket..grab sev hangers fold over your arm and place folded in a laundry basket..carry out to car in a laundry basket....lay in trunk go back for more..or pack this way on the hangers placing carefully in boxes or tubs.
Yes yes this does help 🙏 we are set to move in afew months, so glad i stumbled upon this channel. And to the people sharing in the comments. Thankyou as well! Got some very helpful tips! 😊❤❤
I intended to be the most organized packer ever....we had a whole year before we moved......but you know how it goes. Your organized and have it all under control until you dont.......lol. at the end we were just like.......just throw it in a bag.
I lucked out a while back while l buying some moving blankets at Aldi for a good price. I was doubly surprised to find out each packet came with a mattress bag👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for showing those mattress bags. I'm on my way now to purchase two of them becuz I keep my mattresses in bags for bed bug prevention. Awesome information.
As a former UHaul employee you get more bang for your buck buying the boxes! Although it’s nice to return the plastic bins, UHaul boxes are designed to hold up to 2-3 moves so you don’t have to repurchase them! Also if you buy their boxes, you can always “donate” them back to the store for other people to use (making them free) OR any unused cardboard boxes can be returned at the individual box price.. even if you buy a bundle and don’t use them all. You’re welcome!
I find her tip more helpful tbh. 🤷♀️ cardboard isn’t as reliable. You may like that from your end but I don’t find it particularly better. My ex used to do “man with a van” work and whenever I’d help him we used to take large plastic storage things in case the boxes tore and we never didn’t use them. Unless you’re buying strong quality boxes, which aren’t cheap, this is just a waste of money as renting the boxes is always cheaper than buying cardboard boxes, maybe it’s really cheap for strong cardboard in the US but she crunched her numbers and it was cheaper. 🤷♀️ Maybe costs have changed. Apart from the donating and another family gets it free. I don’t see the positive unless every cardboard box is in the same condition after the move, which they won’t be.
Excellent tips. The hanging trash bags are my fave and body bags for mattresses is a necessity!! Never heard of rental boxes; tell about forcing quick box emptying wow
My husband got free boxes at Home Depot from the overnight crew, these were nice big boxes they would have thrown out after unpacking their inventory. I started packing the easy stuff first at least a month before moving. It definitely helps getting free boxes
Liquor stores also have nice boxes. I used to work at a retail store and unpacked our dry goods from amazing boxes. Our recycling unit for the mall was super far away and we would have to cut down then load the boxes in a vehicle to take them. Instead, I started posting them for free pickup on FB market place telling people to come get them (we won’t assist!) and this worked great because the boxes always found people who could use them, and the people would take these amazing boxes along with the packing paper for their own needs but one day the manager decided we “could be held liable” if somebody ever complained the box cut them, or some other made up BS and so he cancelled my very effective program, which was about as corporate as expected since what I was doing was too efficient and common sense for the manager to comprehend.
The trash bags around clothes on hangers are a great idea.. I've been doing that for years. Save so much time! I'm moving in a few months, and I'm glad I saw the mattress bags
Buy different color tape (my faves are painters tape and electrical tape). Assign a color for each room, and on each box put a piece of tape that color on 2-3 sides. Before the boxes arrive at the new location, put an X of tape on the door or wall in the correct color, so everyone unloading the boxes can easily tell which room every box should land in. Even professional movers have commented on how much faster this system makes it for them. If just friends and family are helping you move, it makes things go a ton smoother.
I’ve always used trash bags to cover my clothes on the hanger but I would put it the opposite way and I was making it harder on myself I’m definitely going to turn it around and put the handles around the hook of the hanger. Also going to order those mattress bags I usually use the ones from Walmart but the ones you have zip up I love that
This only works if the clothes are about the same length and doing it the way you are originally doing it works best even though it leaves a small hole in the bag, which can still be used for recycling, packing paper or throwing out lightweight objects
Its been awhile since I moved but you used to be able to rent cardboard closets from uhaul, combined with bagging the clothes as you did it truly helped load and unload the clothes easily. Love the box rental tip❣️
Moving tips i can say are life savers; large blue IKEA bags. Easier to carry instead of slippery trash bags. Excellent for all the clothes on hangers. I used them instead of boxes. Reusable.then i folded them and packed them in a small box; all the same size totes.; clean items as you pack. Like picture frames and other decorations.; declutter as you pack. My neighbor's sister just moved and wanted her to go help unpack. But, her sister has 850+ medium to large boxes (@17 to 30 gallon size) and laundry baskets full of stuff. True story ! I could hardly believe the pictures she sent me.
Also a little tape and a post it notes to label what is in the boxes or where those boxes go saves time for unpacking at your new spot. A Pro tip is to start getting rid of anything you know you wont be taking to your new spot months in advance.
The mattress bag is a great idea and Temu has them cheaper then Amazon which is even better. And the trash bag for hanged clothes is also a great idea. Last time I moved I got boxes from the supermarket for free. Planning for my next move in a year and a half.
Oh yea! Packing non essentials way ahead of time is a perfect tip! I’ve done that! All pictures. Out of season clothing. Decoration stuff. All that in boxes packed.
Its so beautiful when people mpve to a new house and make a promise to each other that they will never hoard shit or be minimalists just beautiful, like starting over again
My #1 moving tip is to scout out where all donation centers (and who picks up) in your area first. Different places will accept different items so having that info from the get go makes dejunking so much easier.
Yes, I do exactly the same and save you a lot of time stress, and money. The only thing I didn’t do I didn’t buy boxes from the rental place. I just bought get the box from my job which is our work in Publix that save you a lot of time. Thank you for somebody saying it.
They have blue bags on Amazon that are super helpful with moving. They resemble the blue Ikea bags. They come with handles and a zipper, so they are very easy to carry and get back into if you forget what's in there! I also use them for storage/off season clothing, so they are still useful after moving.
- Get smaller boxes for books and other heavy items, so they stay ‘carry-able’… There even are special ‘book-moving’-boxes for this (half the size of an ordinary moving box) but any small box will do of course… - Besides being cheaper, the rental boxes also FORCE you to unpack as soon as possible, which is a good thing, since the temptation of ‘Yeah, I’ll do THESE boxes next week’ is HUGE…!!! …And I can promise you, that that will DEFINITELY end up with you: numerous times moving those (still completely full!) boxes from one side of the room to another… and back…. This then goes on for WEEKS… and even MONTHS if you managed to find a spot for them where they are not blocking anything or otherwise in the way….) 😉 If you can, try moving your bed one day before the big moving day. Especially if you have a waterbed! Have it installed completely before moving day, because I promise you: You do NOT want to have to deal with that at the end of that day AND…….. ….GUARANTEED that you WILL feel like a PRINCE(-SS) when you can ACTUALLY just crawl into bed (clean sheets and all!!) after all that craziness that you WILL encounter (*) moving day!!! (*) = that CRAZINESS is ALSO GUARANTEED !!
Painters plastic for mattresses, cheaper. COLLECT boxes from dollar store, convenience stores, glassware needs small boxes as they are heavy. Get TUBES or pvc for yard tools, put handles in them and tape around top. Wash nic nacs in dish washer before packing. They will be clean to un pack and set up. Use plastic bowl with lid for cords, write what each one is for and tape to cord like a flag with tape protecting paper tag. Pack shoes facing each other to keep tops clean and set in box on sides. Balloons in lamp shades. ALL screws, bolts and such in a double zip lock, taped to underside of item or magic marker name the bag. IF taking dresser keep clothes is drawer put back in dresser if not able because it will be stood up, tape cardboard on top of drawer to keep clothes in and fresh. Remove legs from all furniture for space saving.
Packing away all the decorations first is how I start my moving process! And I had a streak of moves AT LEAST once a year, every year, for 12 years straight!!!!
If you don’t want to purchase mattresses bags you can wrap them in cling film too you might need muscle power for it but just in case . Cling film your stuff if you dont want them to be dirty. I did luggage bags, pillow ,rugs n so on. It also helped as we had a paint job done while moving . Good luck . You can get free cardboard box from departmental stores if in uk try tesco ask them they are fab . For heavy kitchen jars banana box are fab you can get from tesco .
I didn't know you can rent the boxes, but love that. I move annually so my major thing is packing storage/seasonal things as I am done with them, and I always pack a box or two (or suitcase/luggage) for everything needed for the next week. That box stays with me and goes right on my dresser and doesn't get off the dresser until I am unpacked enough to not lose track of the box
Recycle egg cartons as cushions for fragile items, squish and layer them. Paper towel and tp tubes make great cushion/filler. Fill each box 💯 space wise to save from box collapsing. Thrift store yoga mats for wrapping large glass framed artwork. Renting containers sounds nice until you get the bill.
If you're moving long distances and have limited space, vacuum bags are the best trick! I moved across the country with those. Used giant produce boxes from the restaurant I worked at.
