Yeah, my WhatsApp Indonesia number works in Australia on WiFi but not with a Sim. Same in Indonesia, my Australian number works with WiFi but not with Sim card. Amazing 😄
Yeah, it's so much easier when you've done it before and know what to expect. Will definitely be trying out that train to Kampot - such a relaxing way to travel. :)
C & J, a very warm welcome back to the Kingdom! Here's hoping that your stay is wonderful in every respect. Love to hear more deets about your visa status & insurance reqs.
Cheers, Anthony! We sorted insurance yesterday - the process was 100% online, and very easy. Visa will be in the coming weeks. Thanks for joining us on this crazy journey!
Wow did I get lucky, in April I got a Scoot flight from Coolangata Qld to Singapore for 170 and then 70 to PP, prices have gone off, I also booked a cheap flight out of PP as a fwd just in case, and then just canceled it later on. Was never asked any q's at Immigration, seamless. Enjoy yourselves being back and cheers for the vids.
That's an amazing deal! We would prhave gone to the Gold Coast for prices like that, and to transit in Singapore. I hope those prices come back soon. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, beware the long layover in that airport. 5 hours was doable, but more than that would be difficult. There is NOTHING there. It was a bargain for 550 AUD though.
I wished you Happy and success what you want to do, Cambodia is not for everyone, I was born in Cambodia, I left Cambodia for 48 years now, I worked in Europe, now I'm in retire, I never want to come back Cambodia because no security .
Uncle I know it’s been traumatizing. I don’t know much but I was in the fields. I went back 3 times in the last year. It’s very safe and very livable. If you have stable income source. The cost of living is amazing. Give your motherland a chance again ❤❤❤
@@BIGJED75: Migrating to the Philippines is more meaningful for expatriates due to common language spoken in the Philippines is American slangged English! Cambodians can speak very basic English! True or false? TQ
Welcome back, looking forward to the following ones. Cambodia seems to have seduced you, happens to us all I arrived in 2007 and have never managed to leave
Glad you arrived safely. You both must love it there, your always going back. As far as banking, are the banks FDIC insured? Not familiar what it would be called in your home Country. Where bank accounts are protected from bank failures. Your not just not out of luck and lose your deposits?
I know what you mean - we have the same in Australia where the government will protect up to $250k per person. I am not sure if similar exists here. The money in our ABA is really just transactional amounts, so nothing huge. It wouldn't be good to lose it, but if we did, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Having said that, I think it's pretty stable.
I really hate when airlines have mandatory requirements which the final destination (Cambodia) doesn't have. The last time I did fly to Cambodia was with Quatar Airways from Germany with a one way ticket and they denied me boarding pass until I booked a onward ticket (Bus or Flight).
I talked to one guy who hasn't left Thailand for 5 years and just uses his "Charles Schwab" debit card from the U.S.A. He says at the end of the month it refunds all his ATM fees. It's completely free to use!
There’s a string of human trafficking from Manila to Cambodia. Even though say no, they take note in their system for record purposes. If your layover in the airport was at night or before the sunset, you can expect many stalls (if not most) to be closed as is in many other countries. Thus, you won’t find it a pleasant experience being there at all. I just don’t feel the need to shade a country in the SE Asia especially if you’re transiting to a lesser developed country still in the same region.
just wondering, was it really necessary to first enter cambodia in p.p. versus s.r.? questions about onward flights and arrival visas are perfectly normal. airlines are responsible to arrival countries for ensuring that arriving pax comply with immigration rules, which are well noted. i travel to the philippines 2-3 times/year but never in immediate transit and never on pal (and never on budget airlines). both are the pits. thank you for a useful video.
Never thought we would move to another country for our retirement but over the years I’ve invested in really nice brand name furniture and small kitchens appliances.and I’m having a hard letting it go.we currently live in Las Vegas NV. Now will Cambodia allow my house item to ship there? Plz let me know if u have the answer?
We fly from Australia and Singapore Airlines is best for us. I'm not sure about the US, but avoid transit in Manila if you can. Not a good experience there.
Check this info on ABA's website about opening an account: www.ababank.com/savings-account/ Regarding social security, check with the funding body on your side then check with ABA/bank of your choice.
We already had accounts from our stay Dec 2019 to Jan 2023, so it was just a case of reactivating the accounts as mine had become dormant. The main purpose, though, was to deposit the cash we had brought over.
Claire and Jeremey are back in Cambodia. All is right in the world. 😊Can't wait to hear your further reports and where you plan to establish your residence. ✌Peace.
It was one of the worst meals we have ever had. The plane was nice and new but the staff were rude and the transfer was terrible. In saying that it was 50% less than Singapore Airlines.
I'm excited to follow your new adventure in Cambodia. The ABA bank across from Psa Thmei that you guys went in, 50 years ago was a restaurant. They had everything from French pastry to pho, Khmer food, Chinese dishes. Every once in a long while, my father would treat us to a fresh box of French/Western style cake/pastry.
Great to see you are back in the Kingdom. We must have passed each other as I have just returned after three weeks there. I had a wonderful time ( my second visit ) and as a result of the knowledge I now have and the information and inspiration I get from you and your weekly videos I have decided to relocate to Cambodia. I t will take a few months to declutter my life here in Australia but expect to be in Cambodia by March 2023. So, very excited about the move and looking forward to more of your great videos. Thank you and all the best.
That's so wonderful, Lynn. It makes you much more confident about moving here when you have had a chance to explore the place at leisure. We did that a few months before moving way back in 2019 as prior to that, we hadn't visited for many years. Hope you are well and the trip home was smooth. 🙏 🛵🙂🌴
First of all, good to have you back! Second, first kitty...a good luck sign for sure. And, finally, thank you for mentioning that the airline might have various Covid requirements even if entering Cambodia doesn't. We're excited to see you guys again!
Good evening, good to see you arrived safely. I'm scheduled to be in Phnom Penh December 13th. I've only done international travel once so I'm getting a little anxious. Looking forward to the trip. Thank you
Mate it's more annoying than anything. Just look up what you can take as hand luggage, wear comfortable clothes and go with the flow. You will be fine.
Hi Guys love your content. I also flew Philippines one way on the cheap. Had to mention that the flights SYD/MAN $ MAN/PP had no in-flight entertainment at all. It was a long flight on deserted plane back in August. I'm still here enjoying the Khmer hospitality 🙏
Yeah, it's not the best, is it? We had in-flight entertainment on the first leg from Brisbane but nothing on the MAN/PP leg. It was a pretty grim flight - they had to move us because our allocated seats were broken. Makes you wonder about the maintenance in general ......
The monitor seems to be pricey for a poor country. In USA, I can get the same size of monitor with brand name like Dell or Asus for $90. Non brand name is less $70.
Welcome back to Cambodia 🇰🇭 guys. I'm pleased you made it. That's an amazing deal on your sim plan. Cool computer 🖥 shop. I use msi so fast for editing. Sorry about your experience at manila airport. I agree it's not the best airport. I hope you guys settle soon. Best wishes. Mike 😊
Thanks so much, Mike! The phone plan is actually only $6. The extra $1 was the cost of the sim, so an even better deal! Yeah Manila airport wasn't great, but I am glad we only had 4-5 hours there. Some people have much longer and that would be very difficult to take. The things we do for travel!
Welcome back guys. Didn't miss you much, since 'For Riel' continued religiously ;). I love to watch for it is simple, down to earth presentation. Though living in remote Kratie, I will find a way to meet you someday, and relate in person, how good and informative your weekly broadcast is...
Thank you Mandeep! It has been a hard slog keeping the channel going from Australia but now we are back and can make new content. It would be lovely to meet you one day. :)
Welcome back!!! Cambodia is not for everyone but obviously it’s right up your street. After 20 years of coming here I still get excited about arriving here( Cambodia) Maybe it’s me but once people put on a uniform ( and airline staff do) they automatically go into a “make life difficult mode”. The question about visas and return flights always drives me crazy not to mention the current inconsistencies with regard to wearing masks Take care and enjoy Cambodia PS good to see you are renewing your relationship with the road dividers
Thank you Barrie! Yeah, Cambodia just feels like a really good fit for us. Hard to explain, but when it gets you, it gets you. I wish they wouldn't ask those questions about visa and onward travel when it obviously makes no difference whether you answer yes or no. Just puts people on edge. The poor road dividers. I feel like they deserve some TLC.
You said is right, Cambodia is not for everyone, I was born there I never want come to live there, I left since 48 years now, if want to come back to Asia south east I go to Thailand, you can ask all Cambodia who leave when Khmers killed more than 3 millions peoples do they want to come back Cambodia.
@@lesly3905I know it's difficult for you but this does not mean the country is at fault. It's just the leaders. Cambodia is a beautiful country. Even though I was born in Thailand am still Khmer by blood. Heck, I don't even consider Thailand my country of birth 😂
I came back last month. No one asked at the PP airport arrivals, but the airline, as mentioned in this "For Riel' broadcast, can ask for booster shot at boarding time. Land border is unlikely to ask for it tho. However, it is safer to have had a booster this year. At least at PP airport, they have a COVID testing mechanism, if a clearance is needed... I hope the info is helpful...
No, it's not. I think it would be very unlikely for you to encounter any difficulties at a land border. The airlines have to worry about what to do if a passenger is denied entry (it becomes their responsibility) and that element doesn't exist if you cross by land. 🙏🙂
So good to see you guys arrived safe! ....I'm so jealous....😅😅😅😅 . My gf is now in PP too....before stayed with family in Prey Veng. Take care, looking forward to your next video soon!
Congratulations on your move back to Phnom Penh, For Riel! I hope your first couple of weeks are a smooth transition filled with hitting up all the good restaurant spots in PP like Boat Noodles, Freebird, Itacate, etc..
@@ForRiel Oh, so SR is going be the temporary home base of For Riel instead of PP?? Well, then the sentiment of my first post stays the same but the restaurants need to change to Il Forno, Curry & Kebabs, Common Grounds, etc.. Sadly the pandemic took out a few of my favorite SR restaurants since my last visit. Including and especially Belmiros (RIP ;-(
Hi Claire and Jeremy. Happy you made it there safely. Cell Card is what I have used there as well. There are a couple other good ones. But I've been very happy with Cell Card. In Thailand I used True Move. Hope to be back in Spring 2023. Been pretty depressed with having had quadruple bypass surgery mess up my returning in 2019, and then Covid shutdown. And now struggling to get the money saved to come back. Looks like I have to go through one more Canadian winter. But I'll do it somehow. I'll get there,. I really miss Siem Reap, Cambodia, and also really miss Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Never been to Phnom Penh. Hope to visit on my return. My plan is to also stay and live my last years there permanently also. I found in the past that when traveling and living in the tropics, if I avoid air-conditioning and use only fans and cross circulation and dress and eat and drink properly, I suffer in the heat for two or three weeks, and then I'm fine, and never suffer in the heat anymore. I acclimate to the climate. Acclimatization is key. I've never used my airconditioners in my apartments in the tropics. Fans and windows only. But everyone is different. That's just how I do it. Manila ? I had a flight transfer layover there on my way back to Canada from Siem Reap and Bangkok. Nino Aquino International Airport is the worst airport I've ever been to. Didn't like that airport at all. I've heard they might be building a new airport. Let's hope it's a big improvement. Take care.... Thank you for all your videos..... and best wishes to you both. Namo Buddhaya 🙂🙏🏼 🙏🏼 🙏🏼 ☸ 🌴 🦎
Hi Robert, I am sure you will make it back here, and I am sorry to hear that you have been depressed. The world is a different place now, and it's hard to reconcile that. We had so many plans for the time we were here in 2019-early 2022 but none of them were possible. We are hoping that there are a lot more opportunities for travel this time. Yep, NAIA is the worst airport ever. They should go to KLIA2 and see what Malaysia has done with the Air Asia terminal - fantastic!
LOLZ @ NAIA being a crap airport. That airport indeed does suck, it's gotten worse over the years.. There used to be smoking rooms & bars, but not anymore. I miss the good old days (up to 2018). I've been in & out of every terminal in Manila two dozen times. At least the taxi drivers there aren't as scammy as they used to be, so there's that going for it lol. & yea in 2019 I flew from Manila to Phnom Penh (but back then there was a connecting flight in Hong Kong) and I was asked if I had a visa also, I said "no, it's visa on arrival" also, after 15 minutes of 5 of them talking to each other about it, they finally said "ok" and let me go.
It's the worst! Are the other two terminals any better? Isn't it weird that they ask about the visa when there is absolutely no problem with getting visa on arrival (for passport holders of most countries)? I would love to visit the Philippines, but not keen on transiting in that airport again.
Hi and thanks so much for this video, some questions 1. With cellcard what's the process and do they deduct $7 from you bank account every month ? 2. With the bank again what's the process of opening an account. I am on a pension and thinking of moving to Cambodia. I lived in Thailand for many years and considering Cambodia as an option... All help appreciated...
Hi, I just added a link to the ABA information in the description of this video. Sometimes RU-vid removes comments if they contain a link, so I didn't want to leave it here. With Cellcard, we deposit some money into the app, then it subtracts the weekly amount from that balance. Thanks for watching!
I flew the same route a few weeks ago. Brisbane to Phnom Penh was OK but the return trip was a disaster. 19 hour Manila stop over (in that crappy terminal.) For one reason or another during my short holiday I ended up at the central market most days. I was forced to get a very expensive antigen test at Brisbane Airport (for totally no reason).
Oh no. 19 hours in that terminal would be torture. There is literally nothing to do, crappy food, and nowhere to go. It was awful. I wonder if the other two terminals they have are as bad. I just can't understand why it is so terrible.
My envy is riel 😆 Question: can you update us how the (ordinary/business) visa procedure is these days? I heard they're getting more strict on applying the rules (saw this in a Facebook group). Let us know pls. Cheers!
Hi Jan, I completely understand how you feel. It's very hard to watch other people doing these things when you just want to do it yourself. We were in that boat the entire time we were back in Australia. You're right about the visa extension situation. We will attempt this in the coming weeks and see what happens.
Hi Jeremy and Claire , looks like you have hit the ground running , so happy you arrived safely , let the journey begin , take care , stay safe , and most of all have fun , Peace
Cheers Brian! We knew that the day after we arrived would be busy, but we wanted to get up to Siem Reap as quickly as possible. We're here now and starting to let the relaxing tentacles do their work! 🙏🙂
@@ForRiel Stayed in Cambodia from September 2011 until March 2014 (permanently, never left). Siem Reap and Kep. Got a business visa on arrival for a month. Then extended it several times for 6 months or a year. It was incredibly easy. Small tourist kiosks did it for me. Wonder if it is still possible 🤔🤔🤔 Please share with us how your long-term visas will be solved. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your video enjoy your time in Cambodia today in Toronto first snow fall is around 7 centimeters now i have to stick with cold and snow for the next 4 and half months enjoy the weather in Cambodia Claire take care bye from milton Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Oh dear, it's going to be a long four months for you. Canadian winters must be brutal. We will think of you every time we are about to complain about the heat!
Good to see u back in Phnom Penh, can’t wait for more video from you guys. If you don’t already know it, our president Joe Biden is demented and not well. We need a new president in the U.S.
Oh, dear, you fell into the trap of a rabid right-winger. Biden is fine and not unsteady. This is the line (demented etc) that extreme right-wingers and trump lovers are pushing. Please don't fall for it. I guess you don't follow US politics too closely.
Love the landing shots! Internet plan is fantastic, any idea what mbps speed that is? Note security guards are wearing neck ties. Every time I see that in Asia I feel bad for the person as it's soooo hot. Might start a campaign to cut the stupid ties! Anyways, welcome 'home' guys :)
Cheers, STL! Cellcard says their speeds are 22 down and 18 up. It varies though - Jeremy checked just now and we're getting 6 down and 36 up. I was wrong too, it's actually only $6 every 35 days because there was a $1 fee for the sim card. Thanks for watching and for your support. :)
Hello Jeromy and Claire. What cell phone company did you go with? Or were they all the same. Also what ride hailing services are in Cambodia? Bolt? Grab? ABA Bank is a good bank? Are you saying "Pass Up" to pick us up? Is that your preferred ride hailing service? I agree, it is the small things that make me love SE Asia, like the peppers drying on the back of the motorbike, or geckos running along a wall or the crazy vehicles they have in Cambodia or............ I'm currently living in Chiang Mai and will be moving to Siem Reap this Friday in pursuit of English Teaching job. If I can't find in Siem Reap then off to Phnom Penh. Are you still in Cambodia? Cheers
Cellcard has rhe better coverage, but Smart has a slightly better deal at the moment. Both are pretty similar. We love ABA, best app by far. SR is slightly harder to get a teaching job as everyone wants to live here. We are only a message away for any help.
Very good! A fellow "Brisbanite" :) I am looking at "emigrating" to Cambodia from Bali. Do i need to enter the country thru Phnom Penh, or is Siem Reap an access point? I had hoped for more detail in this video...to cover a "burnt bridge" immigration, direct to Siam Reap. Can i just fly in cold (with all my earthly possessions), get an e-visa at the airport (?) , buy the phone plan/number, secure an apartment/address, then convert the e-visa to an ER (Retirement) 12 month visa? If that process is practical, how long a time frame do you estimate - from getting off the plane, to having my apartment, and ER (12 month) visa in hand ? I look forward to any advice you may have. Thank you
It's no problem to enter Cambodia, extend your visa, find an apartment, get your phone sorted, and open a bank account in under a month. The sticking point is that your visa agent will need to send your passport to Phnom Penh for processing, and that can take a couple of weeks. If you didn't have to wait for the visa extension, you could have it all done in 48 hours.
