Since every podcast etc tells me how difficult it is to obtain a permanent Visa or residency does anyone out there know if Austria is also so difficult I could move there and visit France anytime

I'm sure, after 2 months, you probably have already done your research. But I'll say I put in about 6-7 years planning a move out of the US. I started with a plan to move to Switzerland (where this youtuber is from). That is VERY difficult--although there is a small loophole for Americans. But there are multiple paths to staying in France. I say "staying" because what my research taught me is that almost every country looks at non-tourist visitors as potential burdens. When you're a tourist; money goes in 1 direction; from you into the country. When you're there but NOT a tourist, well that's when each country wants to know -why are you there? -how are you going to PAY to stay there? -do you plan to work and take a job from a citizen? -are you planning to stay? -do you want assistance from the government? And THAT is where the problems are. If you profile makes it look like you're a burden, it's difficult to stay. As you can imagine, Austria DEFINITELY doesn't want burden people, so their path to residency and citizenship are complicated, long and expensive (if you want to buy your way in as an investor). Compared to say Germany (which also has a little loophole for Americans). The easiest path to almost every country is student status. Being a student of some kind covers all those questions I put above. Marriage is number 2, but then they're watching you to see if it's "real."

For those planning to settle in France, remember that we're losing our rights, as freedom of expression, freedom of movement. We have to pay fines if we don't respect the curfew, and so we have to be home at 6 pm which is unbearable. Thas is so sad because I love my country, but It seems to be turning into a dictatorship..

I have to travel though France twice a year and found the food to be very poor and very expensive, we were racially abused by a waiter for not speaking perfect French !!!

It all depends on how you act, fincaman2. If you come across with an attitude of entitlement, then the French are not very likely to welcome you, however, if you go with the flow in a respectful manner, there is no reason for what you are saying. And if you are struggling with something, they are quick to lend a helping hand. I have lived in this country for three decades and while I agree that not everything is perfect here, I have never experienced racism directed at me. Not even when my French was still in the "non-existant category". Food can be expensive or cheap, and it can be poor or excellent. I'd like to know what you are comparing your findings to?

@@kayenta2664 My comparison is Living half in England and half in Spain and traveling between the two. I've been told for years that the food in France is FABULOUS and very cheap but it's not, it's not bad but I wouldn't rave about it and as for cost it's slightly more expensive than the UK (north) but massively more expensive than Spain. For instance I had a "menu" in Spain last week consisting of Soup, mixed fried fish, ice cream and a glass of wine that cost 8 euros although it can cost up to 11 Euros depending on where you go. We added up the cost of getting through France (one way) a couple of years ago stopping for two nights it was £870 we now cut France out by going Portsmouth to Bilbao costing £1180 return including evening meal (3 people and a dog) far cheaper. On our way down through Spain we stop once at Santa Ana, madridejos south of Madrid 57 Euros for the night (3 people and a dog), 3 course meal 11-12 each and wine at about 12 to 16 a bottle breakfast £3. I've given you the name of the place so you can check. Now My French hotel, we pulled up outside at about 15:30, the receptionist was very nice and so was our room, we washed and went to the bar for a drinks which I ordered in French. After showering we sat in the lounge for more drinks which we ordered in French, we looked at the menu but got stuck so I politely asked the waiter who was standing at the bar about 10m away if he could help as my languages were English, Spanish and Italian, he said in a very loud voice "you're in France you should speak French France is the best country in the world" we got the receptionist to help us. To our horror it was the same young waiter who was serving us for dinner and we got a mixture of sarcasm and racism all night. we left for our room and I didn't notice that my other half a 74 year old pensioner 5' 3" in height had lagged behind she told the waiter that he was very rude and walked towards the lift he chased her screaming you should speak French, France is the best country in the world. So you can see why I struggle in France and no longer go there.
