Hello, Alexus. Thank you so much for this video. I have been watching your videos for some time now. I'm an aspiring PhD student from the Philippines, currently applying for Fall 2024 semester in UHM. I would like to ask if you have any suggestions in looking for affordable apartments like yours. I will be coming to Hawaii with my wife. We're also tight on the budget so we are looking for an affordable one. Thank you so much for all your helpful videos 😊

Thank you so much for your question! So happy you found our channel and fingers crossed for fall 24 for you!! We hope you can get in! We‘re in a Kakaako affordable housing project (you can just google it and it’ll come up ☺️) but we‘re not sure if you need to be a resident of the US to qualify. You should check! Another option would be living at the east west center! It’s right on campus and even though it’s dorm-style, it has some rooms where you can live with your partner! Those would probably be the cheapest but you can also get lucky and find a good deal through Zillow etc. Hope this helps but if not, let us know!!

Thank you for making this video Alexus! As a SoCal native and recent graduate, I've been considering applying to grad schools in Hawaii. I'm not Hawaiian, but I like to think I have close ties to Hawaii: I lived there for a few years during my childhood, and I also have family that lives there as well. I know native Hawaiians have negative feelings towards Americans moving to Hawaii, but I wonder how they feel about non-Hawaiians attending school there. I wanted your view on it-- have you experienced any push back from the Hawaiian community?

Thank you so much for asking! That’s a very good question! There’s a video by Hello from Hawaii about this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6ExCMvYcGcw.html it’s not the one I was thinking but it’s similar! You should definitely come here if you want to! Basically, there will always be people that dislike mainland students coming here but they’re not the majority! Whats important, obviously, is to treat the place you’ll call your home with respect and kindness, and to make an effort to learn more about it. UH has great classes about Hawaiian history and Hawaiian and pidgin language classes. Second language studies has many classes about local issues and how they relate to stereotypes of languages like Hawaiian and pidgin, for example. Congrats on graduating!! Hope you can come to UH!

@@alexusandmichi Tourists and students drive up the price of housing around the colleges, this forces native Hawaiians out of their homes. Furthermore, the amount of students and visitors has caused irreparable damage to wildlife, ocean and water systems. Many mainlanders have a "choice" of where to go to school but many Pacific Islanders do not and their best option is Hawaii college systems. Finally, visitors have caused many problems/fights regarding how to act on the island, i.e. always talking loud, disrespecting elders,walking on forbidden land, trails, burial sites and wearing thongs in stores and restaurants. A'ole. Hawai'i is being illegally occupied and native people are working hard to reverse that. Please don't take advantage of the situation and add to the colonization of our indigenous land.

@@k10tekyokay but you do understand not EVERY single tourist is bad right? Those who actually educate themselves know how to behave on land that was never and never will be theirs.

Yeah as long as he’s able to get on the island then find a short/temporary living situation (with a friend/airbnb/hotel) then he should have some time to find a place to rent!

Im from there and i approve this video. Its so different when someone who just visited there makes a video vs someone who actually lives there. Great job! 🤙🏽

Oh thank you!! We are glad that you thought we did a good job in this one and hopefully it accurately reflects what it is like to move to the islands from the mainland for school/work 🙂

Is it true that you have to be a local resident to rent an apartment?
@alexusandmichi
@alexusandmichi Месяц назад
I think the application process for renting is much easier if you’re a local resident.. sometimes people may not want to rent to you if not. That being said, you can definitely find a place to rent if you are not one and have just moved to the island!

Please don't encourage people to move to Hawai'i, tourism is a big problem that ends up hurting our island and the Native people.

As mentioned in the video, we are not encouraging people to move to Hawaii. Simply helping those that are moving there for school or a job to prepare for their move as moving to an island can be difficult. We are aware of and understand of this very complex issue.
