Yep. I’m a PA. The other thing though is not prescribing as much as they have been prescribed in the past. Yeah sometimes they are definjtky needed but a simple cold.. no. If it hasn’t been 7-10 days I don’t prescribe that. If it’s longer than that’s more likely a bacteria but less than that more likely a virus. Compared to things like a UTI, STDs, c-diff, more severe bacterial infections (like osteomyelitis, meningitis, etc) those of course get abx right away.

I love you to pieces Abby. And I don’t want this to come across in a negative way . I’m just someone who has gone through alot and I’m old lol and have alot of experience. I almost died 4 yrs ago and during my illness , I had a lot of people telling me , including family and friends , to just get over my illness . Doctors didn’t think I had anything wrong , so my family just assumed the same . My own children told me to just exercise and eat right and just think positive and I would be fine . UNTIL I finally got my diagnosis of Cushings disease . I literally almost died when everyone around me was telling me I should just get over it … And that I just needed positive thinking . I have ptsd now from such a traumatic experience. And while I believe in God and prayer for healing . There are times when you CAN’T manifest getting well . I only say this because I know there is someone out there watching your channel who is not yet diagnosed. They deserve to be heard and believed that they are really sick . Love you Abby , ❤

It's very important to finish all antibiotics prescribed by your doctor. If you end the treatment prematurely (right after you start feeling better), not only do you fail to fully cure the infection, but you also contribute to the risk of bacterial resistance. This will lead to antibiotics being ineffective in the future. Not just for you, but for everyone else too. A common infection, which could be treated with antibiotics, can thus become a life-threatening issue. If antibiotics don't agree with you for any reason, avoid them altogether. I'm not a doctor, but how about reaching out to your former podcast guest, Doctor Mike, to educate us all on this topic? Wishing you all a speedy recovery, guys :)

Sometimes antibiotics have unpleasant side effects. Common side effects for a lot of antibiotics include GI upset (nausea/diarrhea), headaches, photosensitivity (wear EXTRA sunscreen 😎) I’ve experienced tinnitus (ringing in the ears) while taking one. Pretty much all antibiotics ALSO make your hormonal birth control ineffective while taking them so ALWAYS USE A BARRIER METHOD until you finish the course 😆
@abigaylelauer8766
@abigaylelauer8766 Месяц назад
@24_rb Please don’t avoid antibiotics altogether if you’re prescribed one!! That’s what can lead to sepsis (and death). Only avoid antibiotic classes if you have experienced an allergic reaction in the past. In this case, you will be prescribed an appropriate antibiotic from a different class (we obviously don’t want to cause you to have an anaphylactic reaction). Your provider should ALWAYS ask about allergies, and almost always will ask if you recall having taken a particular antibiotic in the past. Any infection can get out of hand and become systemic. (I had a patient admitted for sepsis after scratching what she thought was just a pimple on her chest.) Cranberry juice for your UTI is not the same as a prescription for Macrobid 😅

What Abby said at the start about men suffering worse from sickness, fun fact - People with higher testosterone levels tend to have a lower antibody response. Which is why men struggle worse with sickness. As well, the female hormone estrogen helps slow down how fast a virus multiplies, leading to fewer symptoms. So the “man cold/flu” we all hear about is a real thing! Ladies are just born superhuman I guess 🙌🏼

Hey Dr here! Super easy, 30 second, antibiotic resistance and superbug explanation: Bacteria divide and multiply in your body, making you sick. Some of them can mutate and become more resistant to antibiotics. When you finish the antibiotic course, all the bacteria eventually die. But if you stop the antibiotics early, you only kill the 'weak' bacteria, leaving the resistant ones behind (they needed more time and more antibiotic to be killed). These resistant bacteria can divide and multiply again. This time, they're all resistant since they multiply from a resistant bacterium. That's called a resistant bacterial strain, it's a stronger version of your initial infection. And your initial antibiotic can't fight them anymore - that's antibiotic resistance. If it becomes resistant to multiple antibiotics, it gets harder to treat and it becomes a 'superbug'. Hope it helps! Love you guys & Abby I love your push-through attitude, it does matter a lot when trying to heal, Newton's first law is real!

None of my 4 children ever countered me with "how could you lie about Santa Claus"! It's just all part of growing up. Please finish the antibiotics! Matt is right about it. For any concern about the molecule and the milk you can check elactantia. Less production could be due to the sickness. Have you checked the size of your flanges also? Most people have too large flanges. I think the real average size is 15 or 17 mm while most women are fitted with 24. It can affect milk production quire a lot. And kuddos to your breastfeeding journey, I have only one kid and we are at the 20 months mark, and it can be so hard and stressfull and time consuming. So I can't imagine with 2 young kiddos.

Matt is correct about antibiotic resistance. You take a portion of the antibiotic and kills most of the bacteria who are most susceptible to it, but any that survived bc of mutations/resistance are the only ones left to grow when the infection “comes back”. Now you take the same antibiotic and it’s less likely to work. Think if you pass it to someone else who takes a different antibiotic and also doesn’t finish it, and now there are bacteria left that are resistant to multiple treatments. This is simplified, but this is exactly how multi drug resistant bacteria develop.

Yes, mindset comes in to play some, but everyone is different.

Ask your Dr about the superbugs. It is true. The first time one of your boys need antibiotics and then needs another round of a different antibiotic because they are still sick, remember, it was caused because people don't finish their meds and the bacteria builds up resistance to them. It is also because many people insist on antibiotics for viral illnesses, which is ineffective. That said, I hope you all feel better. 🙂

Yes Abby, if you are given an antibiotic and you stop taking it before your complete course, the infection that it is treating CAN & WILL become resistant to that antibiotic. We live in age where MRSA and Staph have become Superbugs for this very reason. So please for your sake as well as that of your families finish your antibiotics as directed! When you start to feel better it doesn’t mean your done it means the antibiotics are doing their job, if you stop the infection gets stronger and those antibiotics will no longer work, then when your illness is passed to someone else the antibiotics you used are ineffective this comes from a retired nurse as well as mother & grandmother. Literally, my husband is the biggest baby when he's sick too! I think it's a common guy thing. In my personal life experience Women just tough it out more often than men. My 3yo, 6yo, my husband and myself were all SO SICK. Felt like the flu or covid sick (guess it wasn't tho) Anyway we were all down for a week. Yet, my husband slept the whole time and wouldn't move out of bed. I was having to take care of the kids and him and myself. I went to work every day, just took so much medicine and pushed through. I was late one hour one of the days. He missed a whole week of work his 2nd week at his new job he had started. We fought because I would beg him to help with the kids at night since I was hurting from working all day while sick and he said YOU DONT KNOW HOW I FEEL and would go back to bed. As if we all didn't have the same thing and same symptoms. (Normally my husband is GREAT at doing his part with the kids but when hes sick idk who he is lol) When Abby was describing how she felt w.Matt being sick, I totally related.

14:47 Nursing and antidepressants…there’s so much I wish I knew before I did it. My daughter and Auggie are almost the exact same age, she was born 08/10/23. She spent 10 days in the NICU because she wouldn’t eat on her own at all, but I was pumping the entire time and they were giving it to her via NG tube. When she came home, my supply had already began dropping significantly, so we started supplementing with formula. She grew fussier and fussier over a couple of days, fussing turned into screaming, I wound up taking her to the doctor 4 different times within the second week she was home. They just kept saying “possible colic” and giving me gas/reflux/stomach remedies. One night I got super scared and took her to the ER and the physician working that night was the one that asked if I’d been on any medication. I told him about the SSRI I’d been taking while pregnant and nursing, and he said he could tell, because she exhibited signs of a baby that was having withdrawals. My heart absolutely broke. I know mom’s mental health is always top priority, 100%, but please do lots of research, talk it over EXTENSIVELY with both your doctor and a pediatrician, and discuss EVERY option that you have available. Shes my third child, but I was WAY less lost and confused and broken back when I was a brand new mom 12 years ago. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Please, please if you are depressed take the medication you need to help with postpartum depression. It is very real and far worse if not treated for some people. My baby was fine had no issues and no issues with milk supply and it made a huge difference. Most babies do not have an issue. If your supply decreases then you can increase your supple with tea, some medication if needed. It is hard but as baby eats more and doesn’t nurse as much can decrease your milk supply. I am a nurse and worked in OB for 35 years. I have seen so much. Sometimes what you eat, growth spurts can make baby fussy as well. If you are on an antidepressant and taking it as ordered baby does not go through withdrawal. If you need to stop you need to wean off it for yourself as well as yourself so you do not have a an issue or baby. Stopping suddenly can cause an issue and can throw you back into depression. Please discuss with your Doctor prior to stopping your medication. It is very important on a podcast or forum not to say this without knowing anything. We have such a huge issue with postpartum depression and some during pregnancy. It can also get worse with each pregnancy. We are trying to help our Maternal and Infant mortality rate and while many are health issue some included with depression can cause suicides, pre-existing conditions can get worse it can really affect you, your health, your sleep and your life. It is very important to be open and honest with your practitioner. Also ADHD medications may not work if you don’t take it regularly it needs to increase in your bloodstream. Taking it occasionally does not help although if you do not want to take medication you can talk with a therapist. They can help give you tools to work with ADHD.

@@honestlyno4240 oh!! I NEVER MEANT to sound like I was advocating for discontinuation of any antidepressants that anyone is on, I’m so sorry if it sounded that way. **PLEASE STAY ON YOUR MEDICATION** I was just saying that discussing other options with your provider because of what I experienced. I’d just never considered that being on such a high dose of an SSRI and making a sudden switch from breast milk to formula would cause such a disruption for her. I would not have been taking any medication while I was pregnant. If the benefit to me hadn’t outweigh the risk of not taking it and I definitely didn’t stop taking it after she was born.

@missjessee123 It is literally the opposite. I appreciate anyone (men or women) opening up about ADHD and their struggles, the more awareness the better, but your comment is completely off base and not factual. For decades, the conversation and issues about ADHD have been centered around boys/men, which is why women and girls are disproportionately undiagnosed, as compared to men/boys. The original diagnostic criteria was even based on boys and most research studies were also boy centric. If you do minimal research you'll see that gender bias is a huge factor when it comes to diagnosing ADHD, treating it and raising awareness. Things are getting better but when it comes to ADHD, if you are a boy/man, you are still more likely to be diagnosed and treated than if you are a girl/woman.

We have six people in our household and we all get the same sickness and have a variance of severity.

I recently just discovered you guys and ohhh man…So many things you touched on resonated with me. I had horrible postpartum after my son and couldn’t nurse due to the meds (there are actually very few that you can safely take, especially for severe PPD/PPA like mine) and I felt the same way you do about breastfeeding…I was just so sad and I beat myself up because I was being “selfish” for wanting my baby to need me. I truly believe fed is best, but I still get teary-eyed when I think of that time I missed bonding with him. So glad I’m not the only one who can relate. ❤ The ADHD topic as well…I was just recently diagnosed as an adult and realized sooo many of my “quirks” were part of it. I thought my constant worry about other peoples perceptions of me, especially in social situations, was normal. Turns out it’s not. RSD (rejection sensitivity dysphoria) is a real thing with ADHD and one of the hardest parts for me to deal with as a natural extrovert. There are a lot of things I’ve learned about myself are actually a part of this diagnosis and I hope you’ll share more as you discover these things too. As someone who is a successful and (mostly) productive adult it’s super healing and validating to know that there are others who struggle with this stuff and are still doing the damn thing! 👏🏻

1. Y’all are great and so fun! 💕 I agree that the mind is so powerful. 2. “Antibiotic resistance” is what Matt is referring to. You can do simple Petri dish experiments to show that most bacteria are capable of developing antibiotic resistance. How it works is that random mutations allow some bacteria to be more hardy against that antibiotic. Then if you remove the antibiotic early, the ones that survive are antibiotic resistant and are really hard to get rid of. Every introductory microbiology course does this experiment. Antibiotics are really overprescribed, but it is important to finish the full course if you start them. I’ve been studying deep sea bacterial survival strategies for >10 years and they’re really fascinating and are capable of incredible things!

That condition of depression with letdown happened to me as a first time mom. It was not fun and the best thing for me was to stop which made me really sad, but through therapy and God, I have found peace with that... I am 20 and had my baby back in August, and it was just a very hard time with breastfeeding. I did not think that would be a struggle for me and no one around me struggled with it, so it was hard finding support.... That is a real thing though and I have heard it doesnt happen in many women, but mine owuld cause me to have severe panic attacks when it would start to letdown, and then turn into severe depression through the whole feeding. And as SOON as i was done feeding, I felt better. It was so weird. I hope this helps another mama out there though to know that it is a normal thing that can happen, even if your doctor makes you feel its not!

The way the medication works, you don’t have to take it all the time. It doesn’t compound its effect over time the way that something like SSRIs do. If you’re someone who *needs* to take it all the time to be stable then you should do that, but most people can just take it as needed (i.e. monday-friday during their work week). There’s many potential side effects of stimulants that can be uncomfortable and not super healthy for you to have all the time (e.g. rapid heart rate, jaw clenching/teeth grinding) so taking a break from them can be good. It also helps to avoid building up a tolerance, which is a good thing because you don’t want to be putting more meds in your body than you need.
@Awifeofanerd
@Awifeofanerd Месяц назад
I have also heard not taking it regularly can also do harm. I guess it really depends on who you talk to and what type of meds you are taking. I just know that what I had to go through was not fun and things changed dramatically when he started to take it on a regular basis but I think it may be how severe the ADHD is for the person. I know some people are on low doses and it helps and others are on much higher.

I believe it mostly depend on the type of medication as stated before. Some are designed to last the whole day, other are short acting. Side effects are also incredibly individual, my twin sister and I have completely different reactions when on and off it. For some people that 'crash' harder, taking it regularly prevents that. I would recommend switching to a different drug, maybe a long acting form, if you experience any side effects. It is not normal to crash and feel unbalanced.
@sarahko1014
@sarahko1014 Месяц назад
You absolutely can take it when needed. most people do. There’s no research studies because your problem isn’t simply the pill itself. It’s your mg dosage. To have that drastic of a reaction is generally a good indicator that you’re taking too high of a dose for your body. If inconsistently taking it triggers erratic behavior or a rapid personality shift like that, then that’s a textbook sign of improper dosage. If you truly have ADHD and you’re taking a proper dose , then missing days should not send you into a mental spiral like that. If your system is comfortable then there would be no room for that. The point of the proper dose is that your body comfortably reacts to it. So If you’re taking the proper doses for your body, then you should be able to skip accordingly. You might have side general effects but you shouldn’t be experiencing a distinct personality change . Major flag.

And maybe one day when they are grown and they remember that joy, they will continue the traditions and want to experience it with their own little families. Well, for me at least, they why I do it. 😊❤

Definitely agree with Abby on here anytime I’m sick. I just drink one of those emergency drink things and I just keep trucking and I’m fine. Our baby girl had RSV and was literally fine. Just pray over it and boom!!

I'm so glad y'all talked about playground etiquette I was literally just thinking about this the other day when a kid smacked my kid and the parents were nowhere around or sometimes when parents don't watch their kids at all and I never know what to do because I'm very passive until it comes to my toddler

When my husband is sick he acts like nothing is wrong. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him rest because he’s sick. I’ll be scared the day I see him lying down due to being sick. I in the other hand get sick and stay sick forever but having a almost 7 month old and a 4 year old makes me forget I’m sick lol

Abby I wholeheartedly agree with and relate to your breastfeeding stance. My son is a week older than Griffin and then my younger son is a few months younger than August.

Matt, would love to hear more about how you manage as a parent with ADHD. Getting a diagnosis can feel like a huge weight lifted off your shoulders. It validates your feelings that your symptoms and struggles are real and not just a result of “laziness” or shortcomings, helping with those feelings of self blame and guilt we often get. And it can improve our self awareness and understanding to better navigate those difficult parts of our lives.

I don’t know what it is guys but something feels different between you guys, Abby seems to have changed a lot lately. I feel like you guys are drifting a little bit. Of course this is just what I’m seeing and I’m not judging but sometimes we need to check in with ourselves and we don’t always see it when we need too

I sense this too. I think Abby’s confidence is higher. She’s coming across a bit more feisty towards Matt.

Has your husband ever been sick after you? She’s probably fed up with Matt acting like a helpless person while she still has to step up and be a mom. Can’t blame her. And if it is just her feeling confident, then we should cheer her on! She just had 2 kids back to back. You go Abby!

@@christinabruno6248I don’t like the blaming everything on ADHD. I supposedly have it too, but come on y’all, be MORE than a diagnosis.

@@christinabruno6248 it's not the confident factor. I do sense there's tension between them.

Constant life changes change people. Being fresh parents to two and learning to manage being an adult child to your own parents.. jobs, location changes, ect. It can be challenging! Blessings to them and their growing journey! ❤🎉

I think you are both incredible people and examples of what marriage really is, eb and flow, ups and downs, tides changing. I think you both worry too much about what anyone says and don't need to focus on any of that. You do what's best for your family, share your discoveries and we can't take what we want and leave what we want. Don't let anything people say here be of any worth . When it comes down to it you know when somethings not right between you and you are the only ones who can fix it. Your family is your business and you will figure out what works best for you.
