Moving countries is a big decision. And I often get messages on RU-vid or Instagram from people who are thinking of moving to Spain. And they’re curious about my experience. So Yoly and I decided to make this video. This video is an honest look at our experience of moving to Spain. It’s not filled with the steps you need to make the move - though no doubt some of our experiences will be helpful for you.
In this video we cover:
1. How we met - given we both moved to Spain together, but Yoly is from Spain, we thought it important to give a little background on how we met and why we both arrived in Spain together
2. How I became legal - this is a big part of moving to Spain. How can you legally be here? There are lots of options, but I had the easiest option, which was the fact that I was married to Yoly (though we did get married because of love, we also got married for the visa!)
3. Find out first home in Madrid - this was hard because we didn’t have a financial track record here. So we certainly didn’t have the pick of the crop of houses when it came to renting. But we did finally find a place… after a few hiccups along the road (and 6 weeks living with Yoly’s parents!)
4. Finding jobs - This is another huge aspect of moving to Madrid. What work will you do? Yoly continued doing her remote work, but I took it as an opportunity for a career change!
5. The Honeymoon Period - this is the period where I was totally enamored with Spain. Everything was new and exciting. Soon you start to see the more realistic side of living here. But this is an exciting, almost childlike period.
6. Finding friends - This is hard. If you’re moving as an adult, people already have their friend groups. So you have to work hard - join Meetups and other groups. And the friendships you form, might not be exactly like the ones you had back home.
7. Missing family - This is the tradeup of living in a new country. You will be possibly far from your family. Consider how often you can go back - what does it cost? How long will I go for each time?
8. Was it worth it? We rate whether our move to Spain was worth it. No surprises here!
