A 380 yard-long tramway tunnel, constructed in 1832 which served the early coal pits ofNorth Staffordshire, was re-excavated and entered for the first time in, probably, 120 years. 8 years later me and underground explorer uk head inside! The collapse at the far end was directly under the road, it gave way as a lorry passed over and ended up with the lorry in the hole. The purpose of the tunnel was to reduce the height over the hill on the tramway that ran down the hill on the Cheshire side to a Wharfe next to the canal for it to be shipped onwards by boat.

The film you refer to was made by a group of (mostly) members of Crewe Climbing & Potholing Club, in 2002. We took John Holland along on the day we filmed it, as he’d lived next to it all his life but never actually seen it. The film was the culmination of several years of research & excavation led by Len Kirkham, both of the tunnel and the tramway itself. An excellent article by Len, appeared in the Biddulph Chronical at the time. The film was made by the late Ralph Johnson & narrated by Len Kirkham, with Matt Ryan & myself doing the lighting.

Wow this is absolutely amazing! I wrote the article after visiting the tunnel and doing lots and lots of research but I never actually went in! I'm so glad you guys did though because wow, it is absolutely beautiful. So well preserved, a true untouched piece of local history. It should be made safe and preserved! Thank you for the link up and thank you for showing us all inside!

This place should be now made safe as one step in it fills your wellies up and sinks you to the floor! I cannot believe some of the geological changes that have happened in there over all these years, its amazing, i particularly loved the bit without the brick tunnel, it gave us the feeling of caving!
