Welcome back to the farm! In today's video, we look back and see how much progress has been made in our lawn journey since purchasing the farm acreage, then mow and weed whack all 7 acres!! Can you believe how much it's changed? With all the rain we've been getting, we mow every 3-4 days now. I love how the lawn and pasture looks now. The old 1965 gas powered John Deere 4020 tractor has been putting in some serious hours lately! I'm so glad that you guys like her as much as I do. This is our third growing season with the Toro and as you can clearly see from the video, it consistently performs under all sorts of mowing conditions. As always, I am so grateful for you, thank you for watching, and I hope you have a great day! We'll see you next time. Please comment any questions for suggestions for things you like to see featured in future videos!

On that drive shaft, I used a heating torch (acetylene, and oxygen) with a lot of heat and drove it off, lubrication at that point will or just burn away. You need to heat the outside to expand the outer sleeve.

I have seen plumbers use long enclosed propane burners to heat and bend pvc pipe. If you could build some sort of enclosure to heat the the tube the shaft is stuck in maybe it would expand it enough to pull it out?

If you don't have to have it come all the way out, why do all that? Cut it, weld in another section of pipe, call it good. As long as there's not a lot of out-of-round to it, should work good, last a long time.

I was just thinking the same thing. When you think about it, we are truly crazy. We plant grass, water the grass, fertilize the grass and for what? The answer is to spend our valuable time having to mow it. Adult American humans can be silly. I know - I am one. 🤨

On the drive shaft, I had the same problem. Prop it up, pour as much penetrating oil as you can get in, let it sit overnight. Start pulling tension on it and let it sit with tension over night and keep adding additional tension until it finally gives up, it may take a few days, but it will eventually give up. You can add heat from a torch to it also expand the metal with tension on it. Take your time with it and you will get it.
@londonwestman1

Agree to that. Plus you can also try to bang it in a bit as well with a sledge hammer in the hope of freeing it up.. and then maybe it'll come out after.

Laura, you need a "finishing mower" attachment for your tractor. Gets a much smoother cut on your turf grass. Great job on starting the new lawn! Looks pretty good! Very few weeds and no bald spots! You're always my ray of sunshine to watch! :-)

When I was 11 I used to mow my grand mothers lawn with a walk behind push mower a Lawn Boy brand you couldn't feed cattle with it oil in the grass because 2 stroke engine. The lawn was 4 acres in size and she gave me a dollar an acre mowed ,moles lived in the ground and gophers, I'd chase 'em out with a garden hose then kill them with my bb gun, it was profitable mow once a week , some times when I was done I would go over the hill and go out on one of her docks and catch a mess of Rock Bass. She owned a small resort .

I really miss them days. In the winter we used the horses to hall logs for winter fuel and my job was to lead the 2 horses out. would love to go back to them days when family came to gather to help each other,

Try the time proven method of “ heat and quench “ to remove that drive shaft. Spray lots os pb blaster or something equivalent and let it do its thing, then heat up the outer shaft . Get it glowing hot, then stand back and spray cold h2o on it. It will expand and contract and break up rust. May have to repeat a few times. You may need to fasten a slide hammer to the shaft and pound on that stuck drive like it owes you $$.

You can use the pipe method, where the pipe goes through the yoke of the PTO. just watch out if there is a grease fitting in it. use a good hammer tap on the side of the pipe, left and right of the pipe. *based on a RU-vid video.

Looks like to old girl needs a starter rebuild take a drill with a small bit and drill a few holes in the first layer of the outer part of the drive shaft then spray down in the holes and use a touch to heat it and to get the spray in to the rust and to expand the out part of the drive shift and alot of hammering to get it to slid that's what I've had to do on mine I also found that if you spray it down with a dry spray lubricant from WD40 that helps when you store it

looks simple but the first time you sit on one of those it very intimidating. Used one to airrate a golf course, end of each run had to to stop the pto, lift the airrator, reduce throttle (on steering column), shift gears and make the turn all i one fluid sequence and close to sand traps and greens. Very stressful stuff to do all that and not make such a sharp turn that you tear up ground with wheels.

You mentioned you were having trouble with your mower you purchased. Something about the PTO wouldn't come out far enough so you couldn't hook it to the tractor. I don't know a lot about these things but my brother worked as a pipefitter/welder and when he has something stuck he uses heat to help loosen it. Also there is a fellow RU-vidr named Casey LaDelle. He just did a video of him helping a logger friend separate a center shaft from an old logging frame that had rusted. Tried many different ways before finally breaking it loose. Might be helpful for your problem. By the way I love your show. Veery entertaining and educational. Keep up the good work.

If there is a groove in the inner bar, there may be a raised button on the rear most end and a stop in the tube near the tractor. It was manufactured that way to prevent the tube from becoming detached while in use and beating the back of the tractor up as it rotates (really dangerous as you might imagine!!). I would say you are in the market for a different longer pto shaft.

Always love grass being cut, After video ended U-tube did what they are great for and showed another great adventure you had. This one was changing out a tire on above ground irrigation. Anyway you were wanting to check to see if tire was there, Of course it was. You could see it in your rear camera. . What I am getting at is always checking left and right mirrors when backing up. Especially with rear camera . Example: my brother was going to back up with trailer. I was standing at passenger door to help with backup. He never heard me. Instead he gunned it. Only looking at screen. I was lucky and got out of way. Anyway always check your mirrors!!

I sit the red mower up vertical on its back edge, hit it hard with PB Blaster for a couple of days. For safety factor use a nylon snatch strap, put a small amount tension on it, then put the heat to it. Skip a cutting tip, if you want to heat something quickly, use a "rose bud" on the torch. Then if needed, create a sudden vibration by hitting it with a two pound hammer. If all else fails you'll probably have to remove the drive shaft and do something more drastic.

For the shredder - can you install a Zerk fitting "behind" the shaft that needs to move then using\the hydraulic pressure of grease get it to move, of course being VERY CAREFUK because what you have when there's is a couple of hundred PSI of grease is, in effecct, a pipe bomb of sorts??? So if you try this be damn careful!!!

PTO: First things first get it off the mower (we call um BushHogs) and put the smallest end of the shaft up in the air unless the other end has an opening where you can get liquid in and try to get some diesel fuel down in between the two different parts of the PTO shaft and let it sit overnight so that fuel can get in there and break down whatever has got it stuck. Sometimes thougg you just have to replace things. Your lawn is looking great hope yall are staying safe!!!

For the slipshaft use a rosebud torch or similar wipe off all the grease heat it till paint burns off, hit it with 4lb club hammer or sledge heat it again for a bit then while hot lots of cryoil or any premium penetrating oil. If by chance it’s rusted in still repeat process. This method will work. Option b soak shaft in atf when warm the atf will free it up in a week.

Would just disconnect the PTO shaft from the gearbox and replace the whole PTO shaft. Would assume the PTO shaft is coupled onto the gear shaft with a bolt you can remove or cut off if too rusted. Guessing that shaft is bent or not true anymore if its busting chains and wont release.
