I use Arena to lessen the worm castings. It’s mostly for grubs but it does take some of the worm pressure off the turf. Not sure if there is a better product specifically for worms, but that has worked for me every year. Thanks for the videos, I love the detail that you provide.

Glad you enjoyed it! I haven’t come across a permanent worm solution. From what I’ve read in the turf world, top dressing plays a big role in the suppression of worms. The sharp sand reduces their activity on greens. I believe they were bad for me because my green base was primarily clay. Had I known better back then, I would have incorporated a lot more sand.

Just found the channel. Excellent video and clear articulation. So tempted to do a putting green (having a hard time with grass selection). I was waiting for you to break out the stimpmeter and roll a few putts. Lol. Thank you for the great content.

@@ReelTurf I'm in South Florida. Bermuda hybrid like TifEagle, Champion or MiniVerde. However, I believe there are some Zoysia hybrids that are also good options. Would welcome your feedback.

From what I’ve read, I think I would pick Champion. That variety sounds incredible! We don’t have zoysia out here very much so not sure on it. I know many golf courses are starting to convert to zoysia. I always side with Bermuda. It can withstand drought when sprinkler mishaps happen or weather happens. It always bounces back quickly with water. It feels good. Always has consistent color. A year ago we were around Rosemary beach and Alys beach and I couldn’t believe how nice the Bermuda was there! I don’t think you could go wrong with any of them. You’re looking at the best of the best.

Hey man, just came across your channel…not sure why it took RU-vid so long to suggest your videos to me lol really enjoy the content and watched numerous videos! Also subscribed!👌🏼 what kind of bentgrass are you using?

Welcome! Glad you have enjoyed it. The putting green is Pure Select Creeping Bentgrass.

The golf green looks great! How do you keep the bentgrass from creeping into other cultivars, such as KBG, perennial rye, or fescue on the collar and surrounding areas? I'd love to try a small bent area, but am concerned about contaminating my nearby KBG with Bent. Thx again for the vid.

Glad you enjoyed it! My bentgrass doesn’t seem to creep that aggressively when it’s kept at a very low mowing height. When it’s up against a higher height fringe area, the fringe provides a wall. I would say you would have success by keeping everything well maintained and using plant growth regulator being the key.

So I commented on another video about attempting a putting green this year. Right now I just have a manual reel mower that can get down to 0.5". I'm hoping to secure a greens mower for next season but is it going to be difficult/damaging to take it down lower next year when I do eventually get the greens mower? Do you just slowly work your way down? Any advice on helping with the stress that will likely come from taking it down or does bent grass generally recover fairly well from that type of temporary stress?
@ReelTurf
@ReelTurf 3 года назад
The best time I have found to take the height down gradually is very early spring when the grass doesn’t grow much. You have less disease pressure and slower growth which allows you to take it down slowly without yellowing. You cannot scalp bent like you see people do with their lawns. Most of what you’ll see on the internet is people scalping their Bermuda to death or smothering it in sand to create a green. Do not do it to bentgrass, it will fail every time. A good greens mower makes the experience a lot more enjoyable. A ball doesn’t really putt well until the turf is below a 1/4 inch.

@@ReelTurf I'm constantly scanning marketplace and Craigslist for a used one. Saw a Toro Greensmaster that said it had about 200 hours on it and they are asking $1,000. I have no idea if that's a fair price or not.

worm castings are infuriating. I have tried all the cultural practices- if they are ever successful it'll be a few years down the road. They are more active in some areas of my green than others but its like you said, pockmarked, like the surface of the moon. Oh well. I appreciated the demo on small increment HOC too. The closeups told the whole story
@ReelTurf
@ReelTurf 3 года назад
Yes the worm castings are frustrating! I’ve read before with the correct type of sand in the soil profile you can eliminate them because the worms don’t like the sharp edges of the sand. If I ever build another green, I’ll be more diligent in the correct sand ratio in my soil profile. It’s frustrating seeing all of the hard work destroyed bit by bit every night. Yes there is a significant difference in bench height of cut vs effective height of cut. 1/64 makes a dramatic difference in playability. Glad you enjoyed it!

@@ReelTurf i started with regular sand just as a practice to firm everything up, then the castings started. I switched to coal slag and so far no change other than it's twice as expensive! It's only been a couple of months though and supposedly it takes years. I may try to build a true sand base by using my pro plugger to pull big cores and then replacing with sand or coal slag in the worst areas. Worms seem to like more moist low spots although they are not real picky.
