It has rained here a lot and our grass really needs to be mowed so Tractor Time with Tim puts the dual wheels on the Ventrac 4500 and off we go to the wettest areas in the yard. Mowing in the mud wasn't hard with Vinny!

I have found thru experience when you are having a really wet Spring let the grass grow! It's easier to tackle high grass when dry then medium grass when wet... Great way to test the floatation of those dual tires though!!! Thanks Tim!

For sure. I've been planting cover crop into the wet parts of my property including oilseed radish clovers and winter grasses. Then in spring that grows nice and thick and helps dry me out. Then I flail mow. My infiltration is way up and I'll start switching away from this to a no mow deep rooted grass in the lawn next season. I also have a 6" drain tile that gets overwhelmed in heavy rain and with my clay pan it gets really wet. I installed a 500 gallon septic tank at the near end of this and I use a sump pump to move that water either for irrigation or when wet I discharge back down the drain tile once the heavy rains stop. Really nice to have that reserve in the dry months to water the yard and my hops!

I’d probably let that area go regardless of wether it needed mowing or not 😂. That areas pretty much trashed now.

I have a 1/2 acre property and move it with a 42" Craftsman Riding Lawnmower. My SE corner is a bit of a bowl and with a few inches of rain it becomes nearly unmanageable. This spring I upgraded from 8" Turf Savers to 10" Super Lugs which has made all the difference and i can mow, if necessary, in standing water without goring the hell out of the grass. It was interesting to me to see the Ventrac, with duels, struggle to 'float' over those soft spots. I would have expected it to perform a bit better but its hard to see how wet it truly was.

Really wet here in upstate NY also. The 2nd 1/2 of last summer was really wet also, to the point people were mowing wet saturated yards, and tracking them up with the mower wheels. Raining all day today🙃 We really need an entire week without rain. Hopefully Mother Nature will ease up on the constant rain a bit. Keep up the great work on the videos Tim, really enjoy watching them. God Bless you & your family.

Nice video showing what the Ventrac can do. This has been the wettest spring in a long time. There are a few wet spots in my lawn that I started to sink And leave ruts. I just continued on And left it until it dries out due to it being more work to fix later. This is the first time I wish I had duels. I was so happy to see you go back And blow the grass you put on the road back into your lawn. Drives me nuts when people blow grass on the road And leave it there. That's a dangerous situation for anyone on a motorcycle. Looking forward to your drainage videos. I have to do something by this fall on my broken field tiles, Cant handle it anymore.

Wow - you bought right across the road from my grandparents’ house. I practically grew up there we were there so much. It’s the little white farmhouse with the big white metal barn behind it. Unfortunately my grandparents passed away 10 years ago, but I spent many hours picking up rocks and cutting down horse weed in the field. Along with riding on the fender of their Farmall and in the cab of the 1586.

The term for "clamps" that tighten the duals onto the inner wheels is "collet". Not a whatcha-m-callet, but a collet. ;-) That looks like tall fescue grass, suggest cutting taller. It really likes to be at 4" to 4 1/2". Even if it makes hay, I would avoid cutting when that wet, you risk mold damage and brown spot.

Tim, you could fix that drainage problem in a few hours with just a box blade... It makes shallow ditches real quickly once you learn how to adjust it. You don't need to shave off much to get all that culvert pipe water to go around the edge of your property and right into that farm field... Good Luck!

Tim, what you really need to solve all these problems is a small dozer. Case makes a nice one called a 450. You can use your magnet laser reader on the side of the blade. Additionally it will make recutting your ditches and grading easy and fast! We do those kind of projects all the time and it’s usually a two day deal for a project that size.

Tim and Christy, After you dig out the pond, consider taking the hump and placing around the edge of the pond, sloping it out to a drain tile almost like a French drain around pond. This would help you shed some of the water to a collection point, but also increase depth of pond.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do. I'm struggling with my own drainage problem, but not nearly as severe as yours. I think I fixed a good chunk of it and posted a photo of the drainage I put in on GTT. I still have to solve sitting water on the lot next to me, but I don't want to mess with it until I see what the state does about draining the road that floods out front. The road flooding comes through that lot and my property so without seeing what the state does, I think I'd be wasting my time.

For the ditch I'd just leave it in float. Works fantastic on my ditches which are severely sloped (hard to tell from video). As far as the discharge, I use the 72" rear discharge deck to avoid the whole problem of which side to mow on. That wet area? Maybe plant some pampass grass (or fountain grass). Mow it once in the spring and leave it go all year. Looks great in winter.

Tim what I see with the drainage that might be one of many options is getting a concrete drain culvert for that culvert at the road to drain into to pipe the water to the pond with a water gate valve and on hot days pump the pond down so the pond has the ability to hold the excess water from potentially washing your driveway out

Thanks Benny. There are a small group of viewers who are watching only to find fault. There is a list of ‘RU-vid approved’ safety violations that these viewers pounce on. Apparently they think they are doing some sort of a service to the community by nitpicking at any of these items. These users never actually DO anything with equipment. Rather they spend all of their time complaining about what others do. They don’t realize that the only impact they have is to decrease the quality and interest of RU-vid videos. Producers (like us) realize that we must self censor our videos to meet all of these unwritten rules. This is sad. ...but I know of no other way to handle it.

Tim I move dirt for a living looking at the elevation numbers it would be pretty easy to cut a ditch and drain that through the farmers field but getting him too go along with that might be a problem if it was me I would tile the area where your having your water trouble now and dig the pond deeper and drain your low spot in to your pond now if you could do that also you could talk to your neighbor farmer and install a tile to catch overflow from your pond through that waterway that way there’s limited erosion and it works for both of you just an idea.

I have the same issue with water and springtime mowing, I just wait till it's dry enough not to make ruts. Jmo, but I would excavate the pond, spread the dirt over the low areas and drain tile it back to the pond and don't bother with the farmers field. If there's not enough dirt from the pond, then use the dirt from that giant mound also.

Never seen a dual setup like that, I wonder how long that will last. I’ve used duals on other equipment and ATV’s, they all had an adapter to use the lugnut system. On the ATV’s the outer tires were slightly smaller in diameter yet higher PSI than the inner tires to allow easier turning on hard surfaces.

Have you guys decided what your plans are for the man made hill? If you plan to get rid of it, a possible suggestion is to use that dirt to raise the low area near the road. Use your laser heavily if that is what you do, several potential issues. The road, your drive way. Perhaps you could add very little height close to the ditch but gradually slope higher into the yard. You may still get overflow from the ditch, but as water recedes, it flows into the ditch instead of staying in the yard. Yes your ditch was wet still, but not deep standing water
@kencotton4645
@kencotton4645 5 лет назад
Tim, maybe you should just dig it out and make a second pond there since it is such a wet area! Seriously as others have suggested, maybe you could find an alternate use for the area other than lawn. I'm worried that your neighbor might not want that extra water going across his field. It may leave the ground too wet to till and affect yields.

I am impressed with the tractor handling that pretty well.. But wow did you make a mess.. It appears you pulled more grass out by the root than actually cut it.. Have to agree with other comments.. probably would have left it alone myself. As for drainage.. Good luck with the farmer.. Depending on his crop plan, he may not be open to putting a drainage dip through the middle of the field. One solution is you could put in a tile and run it to the edge of your property then down toward the pond. Only thing you would have to be careful about is chemicals you put on the yard running into the pond then if you plan on adding fish. For me, I never use chemicals so one of our drainage setups leads to our pond and it works perfect. What sucks is the newer sewer mound systems they force everyone to have now. Which is ridiculous.. That is definitely what screwed up the area drainage. There is no reason the sewer requires a "mound" in it.. That could have been designed to be below ground level but whomever the engineer was that designed the spec, as usual, was a fool. And of course politicians just went with it instead of other designs.
