Mowing Wheat with a Krone 420 Big M Mower near Berne Indiana 

Joe Kersey you and I kind of think the same way I worked on a farm in the 40's and 50's as a young lad and you sure are right. I first started watching videos a few years back from Europe and UK and they were doing this. I don't know when this type of farming came to North America.

Double cropping wheat, cereal rye or triticale (hybrid cross between wheat n rye) and corn silage has become more n more popular here in the Midwest over the past 10-20 years. Take off the cereal grain in early-mid May and plant corn back into it harvesting both for silage. The winter cereal grains make an excellent cover crop after corn silage as well. As far as direct-cut silagemaking, that's more commonly done with barley in early dough and quality can be equal to corn silage. Other cereal grains are harvested at flag or early boot to get the maximum balance of quality vs quantity.

But why use wheat? If that double cropping would be possible here I would use oats. It would grow faster, doesn't require much nutrients (or would yield more), more resistant to fungus and seed is cheaper. Or don't you grow oats at all?

They will double crop corn into this field for corn silage.

They figured it would be dry enough by the time they chopped it. Not sure on the moisture.

Yes this was cut on a Saturday afternoon and chopped on Monday.

We are cutting 450 acres of alfalfa just west of Berne tonight and tomorrow
