I have the vinyl pressing (actually 3 copies) of the LATER "CBS Masterworks" Casadesus/Szell performance. Different in some ways - first movement slightly slower, touch not quite as luminescent and "pearly" as here, and a little less tense in the last movement, but recorded vastly better (stereo of course, with a very convincing sound stage). The incredible emotional depth of this performance is just as pronounced in the later one. Szell's (and the orchestra's) contribution is more obvious in the newer recording. The wonderful Saint Saens cadenza is very slightly extended in the later version, and is, to my ears, even more compelling! I have some 20 recordings of this work, including most of those described as "the best on record", and I find myself invariably drawn back to Casadesus' phenomenal interpretation of it.

Never fails to touch my heart -- both the intense beauty of this particular Concerto and the brilliance with which Casadesus and Szell/Orchestra perform it. Every time I hear the opening bars, my sometimes hardened heart falls open to the healing loveliness of music. Reminds me of the Chopin concerti which have the same effect on me. Bravo!

Very precious recording of the beautiful performance of this somewhat sorrowful concereto. The exciting interaction between the soloist and the conductor can rarely be heard nowadays.

Recommended this recording on a couple other posts, just happened to stumble upon it here. When a work is performed right, you can hear its greatness. This (and I think they have an even better one released as a CBS Masterworks) is one of the best performances of this concerto I've heard. If you can hear this with extra bass and echo on your computer speakers you will be in Heaven. There's a romantic heaviness to this recording that pushes Mozart way forward, explaining why Beethoven was so completely drawn to this work, and based his entire 3rd Piano Concerto on it. Seriously, try to hear this with a little echo and bass so you can appreciate how good it really is. But download the recording on CD, I think that might be the better performance of the finale, which is the best I have ever heard. The Ashkenazy, Perahia, Gould, Kissin, Uchida, they are all inferior to the CD recording.

His (self-written?) 1st mvt cadenza ends much in almost exactly the same manner that I have conceived, even though this is my first listening to this recording. You won't find this level of excitement in a Mozart concerto in most modern-instrument readings today.

I presume that this cadenza is Casadesus' own composition? It is marvelous.

The cadenza is by Saint Saens. There is a shorter version which is slightly easier but not nearly as compelling. I don't know why this cadenza is not played more often - it is overwhelmingly better than most of the others out there. Perhaps though, you need someone with the rare tonal qualities of a Casadesus to really make it shine.

David: I passed a Casadeus playlist of Haydn but when I went back I couldn't find it. Do you know if that is yours, and if so, can you send me the link? I'm not very computer/youtube savy so perhaps that is not the proper question. I want it badly if you uploaded it.

Did someone refer to George Szell as a "dubious conductor"...? lol
@2024Warren

George Szell was adored for his performances but hated for his temperament. He would often reduce orchestral musicians and even soloists to tears.

If there's a single Szell/Cleveland recording from the 50s and 60s that isn't at LEAST "excellent", I've yet to encounter it... ridiculously consistent greatness

Great pianist, very dubious conductor. What hard-pressed wrongheaded stuff.
